Protesters demand justice for Vanessa Guillen at downtown Houston rally - HoustonChronicle.com

Crowds of protesters packed downtown Houston on Saturday evening to demand justice for Vanessa Guillén, the Houston native and Army specialist who police said was brutally killed at a Central Texas military base in April.

Exactly how many people attended the rally was unclear, but the crowd exceeded the 1,200 people who RSVP’d online.

The throngs of protesters stretched at least two city blocks as they made their way from Discovery Green to City Hall in the sweltering heat, chanting Guillén’s name and calling for new investigations in her death and for the military to reform its processes for handling sexual assault allegations.

1) It's another case where the protest message is unclear. The murderer is dead (suicide), his accomplice arrested. Allegations, or at least rumors, of harassment came to light after her disappearance, and weren't reported, but the Army IS doing a review of the base and policies anyway. In any case, the city of Houston has no involvement, and the destination (City Hall) was closed.

2) The city is in the middle of an epidemic. The state and county have banned outdoor gatherings of 10+ people. Yet we allow thousands to gather.... again.... for a mass protest???

What is clear is that justice was not done as so often before in such cases. What is clear is that you're more concerned that people are complaining about an injustice while we should only be chewing gum. Which I don't know that you care much about, any way. That part I'm not clear on.

That's a pretty bizarre statement. I don't understand your 'chewing gum' reference. A failed insult maybe? I don't think anyone should be gathering in large numbers for any reason to spread disease in the middle of an epidemic. Especially in a city where the medical services are already stretched to the limit due to a surge caused in large part by.... people gathering in large numbers for similar events. It's stupid.

What happened to this young lady was tragic. Again, the killer is dead, and his accomplice has been arrested. Authorities investigated the crime, and moved quickly once they had clues to work with. What justice was not being done? What does the city government have to do with it?

So do you support the government ban on large gatherings or do you support freedom?

That entire command needs to be relieved for cause. A soldier was killed during the ****ing duty day, in the ****ing unit arms room and they didn’t even really try to find her when she went missing for weeks.

If this soldier had instead been a missing pair of NVG’s, they’d have shut down the entire post and had people walking shoulder to shoulder across it for days until they found her. The Army cares more about easily replaceable equipment than it does it’s own people.

What "injustice" is being alleged and what could Houston's city hall possibly do about it?

Given that the person responsible is dead, what further justice are these protesters expecting?

Those aren't mutually exclusive.

Right now, we have to get the disease under control. We're having to confine people, place restrictions on individuals, and shut down businesses to try to reign in the spread because people want to hold these massive events where it is spread. It's costing jobs, lives, and 'freedom' for the community.

Not to mention we have local leaders supporting severe measures to contain the disease, while endorsing events to spread it.

These people need to get a life.

The negligent incompetent command to have their careers ended. Every single senior NCO and Officer in that unit needs to be discharged or at least exiled to an assignment in BFE where they will never again see a single award or promotion.

This could be the beginning of a movement to 'defund' the military, as hinted at in post 5.

Good luck. :lamo I'm going to start a movement to defund stupidity.

Where did I “hint” at defunding the military? If you are going to lie about something I post, in the future at least have the balls to quote it and tag me.

Because the perpetrator killed himself? Do you have a logical explanation as to why "Every single senior NCO and Officer in that unit needs to be discharged"?

She was killed DURING THE DUTY DAY IN THE UNIT ARMS ROOM. She was not only murdered there, but completely dismembered. The arms room was covered in blood per CID’s own investigation and none of the command even noticed. They didn’t even search for her for weeks.

But had she been a missing rifle or pair of night vision goggles, the post commander would have put the entire base on lockdown and had every single soldier, officer and enlisted alike, coming the base should to shoulder until it was found.

How, exactly, is protesting at Houston's city hall going to make that happen?

Puts pressure on civilian leadership. They can’t exactly protest on Fort Hood can they?

Unless things have changed since I was in, AWOL apprehensions are treated as important but not urgent unless there is reason to believe there is a security risk involved.

When can we expect to see the protest over the deaths in Chicago? "Thirteen people have been killed and 54 others wounded in shootings across Chicago so far over the Fourth of Julyweekend. Nine of the weekend’s victims were minors, and two of the children died from their injuries."

Fourth of July weekend gun violence: 67 shot, 13 fatally, so far in Chicago - Chicago Sun-Times

None were from police actions.

Oh here is an idea. Lets defund and/or get rid of the police.

This is the city whose hospitals are overflowing with COVID patients, and the Democrats have no objection to people continuing to hold protests here..

Hmmm...

Exactly. Missing soldiers have less value to the Army than a missing pair of night vision goggles.

Here’s a better idea: end the War on Drugs.

That's how the movement to 'defund' the police began -by blaming everyone- "The Army" in this case, for the act of one person or the incompetence of another. You may not be involved in any movement whatsoever but blaming the entire army, or 'the police' in other protests, is how these movements work.

What I'm saying is that this "could be" the start of such a movement, and I suspect there may be more suggestions and criticisms like yours in the days and weeks to come. We'll see.
