Ocasio-Cortez dismisses proposed $1B cut: 'Defunding police means defunding police'

Just how insane has the US become that you expect to be set-upon by murderous thugs at any moment?
I'm sat here with my windows wide open and not a single Ninja has hopped in and killed me in 44 years. Maybe I'm just really, really lucky though.

The fear of crime by you guys is bloody amazing.

Fear of crime by "you guys"? Where did I express any fear of crime? Quote me and be specific.

If you had lived in New York City years ago decades ago you would've been extremely vigilant. It took a Republican mayor to clean up that city. It was disgusting. The cat calling, the peeing on the street, the harassment, the break-ins, theft and murders were so common that crime was part of a person's daily life. You walked in a hurry. Central Park was a mess. You didn't dare stroll in after dark. You weren't safe in the subways. They reeked of urine, and beggars would literally harass people into giving them money. Autos were a favorite target. It became a joke to drive some barely running jalopy so that it would be bypassed by the thugs. Everybody I knew had a bar lock on their apartment door, so nobody could actually break the door down. You have no idea what unethical fools these so called lawmakers are by trying to diminishing the police. Thanks!!

Have you thought that maybe if you had better social programs to help people out of a life of crime things may not be so bad in the first place?

Sorry if this wasn't intended but I thought the tone of your post was very downbeat and made the US sound like a bit of a warzone.

they don't necessarily wanting cuts...they want police reform...period.

No....they've actually been pretty vocal about it....they want cuts

Nope, I am in pretty much agreement with there needs to be strict measures..and I am part of that crowd...I want reform...there needs to be strict requirements on any budget a police department receives though.

That's right she's right! Defund the police means DEFUND THE POLICE! It's about time a liberal told the truth.

Now stop watering down BLM's Marxist guerrilla demands and whitesplainin' what they mean.

Why? We all watch trump on tv saying crazy things and then we get on here and read from those on the right what he actually meant, like we didn't hear what he said.

You sound like my father, do as I say, not as I do.

New York was nothing BUT social programs. ANYBODY could get a welfare check or food stamps, free bus fare or a free pass to college or free nursery care if they played the system right, and it wasn't hard. And the cops were so understaffed and overwhelmed that they could barely make it through shifts because that's where all the money went, to social programs. All day and all night long, all you heard were police car sirens. And New York was EXTREMELY dedicated to the Democrats, but it got to the point where people were so desperate that they gave a tough Republican DA a shot as mayor, and he went in with a scorched earth policy, gave the police what they needed in terms of staff and funds and had them arrest every last vagrant, vandal, rapist, thug, hooker, dope dealer, thief or murderer. The prisons were packed. But remarkably, law abiding people slowly found that they could venture out again and enjoy Central Park at dusk. And they could walk the streets with their kids without being jeered at and harassed. When DeBlasio let all that rioting crap happen on 5th Avenue, I knew NYC was sinking lower than low, just like the good ol days. So the exodus has not only gotten started, but hasn't even ramped up yet. Thanks!!

Yes, because nothing says "great city" like rounding up all the poor and chucking them in prison.
What a wild success it was to just fill the prisons with anyone who you don't like.

I like the idea of an AOC. It is a shame that the reality of an AOC is so wanting. As soon as she stole the Green Party Green New Deal, took out most of the Green and replaced it with welfare, I knew she was going to be yet another disappointment.

Anyway, it is fire season in the Amazon so they left will be off onto another doomsday scenario soon.

No, nothing I said gave you any indication whatsoever that was the case. I pointed out the immutable fact that the police in no country on the planet are able to protect you, they can only begin their work after you've already been attacked.

It is thus incumbent on you to defend yourself because if someone breaks into your house at night the cops won't be there for at least 30 min in most places.

Lol!! Yep. Those murderers and thugs are your friends, Peter. It's just those awful other people that don't like them!! LOL!! Thanks!!

Yep, that's exactly what I said.
When I see a city with crime problems I try and work out how people can be brought out of poverty and how we can try and make people's lives better so they don't commit crime rather than just flooding the place with police and bunging as many people in prison as possible.
If that makes me a wimpy liberal then so be it.

This was more of a criticism of De Blasio and his plan. Her claim is that simply cutting a billion dollars with no other meaningful reforms isn't going to change anything, and she's right.

DeBasio is transferring a billion dollars from the police to his staff and New York City bureaucrats.

It doesn't mean there will be no police, it means the police shouldn't be responsible for every aspect of society and it should be divided among different agencies with different priorities. Not every problem in society requires an armed cop. Look at what Minneapolis is doing as an example.

You lie and exaggerate because you have an agenda.

if you defund the police they have ni money. thar means there is no police.

MN lol those people they are going to send have 0 authority. they can go kick rocks.

Minneapolis is not getting rid of the concept of police officers nor has anyone in government suggested they do so. You lie because you have an agenda.

Also, the police do not protect people in their homes. They wait until they're attacked then clean up the mess.

they just dismantled their police department.

Like all US politicians that are opposed to you owning a tank and a rocket launcher? Everyone is pro gun control, it only differs where you draw the line, and nobody is trying to take all guns away.

you are free to own a tank and a rocket launcher as long as you have the correct licenses etc.

It is not legal anywhere in the US to buy a working rocket launcher nor can you own a tank with a functioning canon. Stop being ridiculous and cut out the hyperbole. All US politicians are pro gun control in some way.

Checking if someone isn't a felon is gun control.

yes you can you have no clue what you are talking about.

you are 100% allowed to own artillery cannons as well.

Peter, for years and years, understanding and tolerance were tried. Social programs were enacted, funded, and foisted on tax payers. People TRIED to make sense of the violence and solve it through social programs. But so many miscreants just got more and more emboldened and felt such a sense of entitlement, that they actually preyed on law abiding citizens on a daily basis. If you understand New York, you understand that it's a very liberal-minded city. But in those days, it got to the point where nobody was actually safe unless they were extremely wealthy and could afford private protection. Cabbies had a dangerous job and were being picked off by armed robbers and murderers. There were neighborhoods nobody wanted to go into. You want to live like that, because that's what it means if the police presence isn't there?? But people won't anymore. They'll just get out. They can now, because of technology. And that will leave "defunded police" cities with a dearth of businesses and short on income tax. Thanks!!
