Ocasio-Cortez dismisses proposed $1B cut: 'Defunding police means defunding police' thehill.com

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said New York City’s proposed $1 billion cut from the police department budget tiptoes around demands from activists who are asking for a reduced police presence.

Though the plan proposed by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) cuts one-sixth of the New York Police Department (NYPD) budget, activists note that much of it would be transferred to other city departments, including the Department of Education, where it could pay for police in schools. Activists have advocated for removing officers from schools altogether.

“Defunding police means defunding police,” the congresswoman said in a statement. “It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education’s budget so the exact same police remain in schools.”

The Darling of Leftists has spoken. Stop trying to water down BLM's message.

This was more of a criticism of De Blasio and his plan. Her claim is that simply cutting a billion dollars with no other meaningful reforms isn't going to change anything, and she's right.

Lookin more and more like liberals are only in competition with conservatives over who is better at ****ing over and ****ting on the "left"...

That's right she's right! Defund the police means DEFUND THE POLICE! It's about time a liberal told the truth.

Now stop watering down BLM's Marxist guerrilla demands and whitesplainin' what they mean.

Who's with AOC on this? Line up and cheer for the dismantling of, well, everything!

It doesn't mean there will be no police, it means the police shouldn't be responsible for every aspect of society and it should be divided among different agencies with different priorities. Not every problem in society requires an armed cop. Look at what Minneapolis is doing as an example.

You lie and exaggerate because you have an agenda.

Time for Nancy to pull her aside again...Oolit-cay with the alk-tay.

Please. Just stop.

Don't water down BLM's message. AOC has set the record straight. The mayor of Minneapolis understood the question, answered no, and was booed out of the assembly. Then the city council voted to...*checks notes*, "defund the Minneapolis police department".

But...and get this....they hired private security to protect themselves, their homes, and their families.

You like apples? How do you like them apples?

Minneapolis is not getting rid of the concept of police officers nor has anyone in government suggested they do so. You lie because you have an agenda.

Also, the police do not protect people in their homes. They wait until they're attacked then clean up the mess.

Welcome back to the 1970's and 1980's.

AOC didn't share a single thought about how her asinine policies will keep criminals in check.

The Bronx will go down first, and it will take another generation to bring the city back after the shooting starts.

this is true, and it's why citizens should be able to defend themselves with guns

Indeed, which is why it's good both parties fundamentally support that right and nobody with any political power is trying to change it.

while it's true that no national politician with any power is trying to take away all guns, there are many national politicians with power that would like to restrict which tools we use to defend ourselves with.

so what you're saying is, if they do this fast enough, Republicans may win NY?

You're saying NY City is left wing?

Like all US politicians that are opposed to you owning a tank and a rocket launcher? Everyone is pro gun control, it only differs where you draw the line, and nobody is trying to take all guns away.

No, her complaint was clearly that she doesn't consider this a sufficient cut.

I imagine DeBlasio and other local leaders in New York could care less about what Ocasio-Cortez has to say. She's obviously still leaning how to be a congressman, and has no background in local governance. She has no business chiming in on this kind of issue.

News outlets (and others) love to interview her though, because they know she's a train wreck that will give her opinion.

no, I mean things like Assault Weapon Bans, magazine size restrictions, limits on the amount of cosmetic options a rifle can have, etc.

Also, what makes you think you can't own a tank or a rocket launcher? 'cause you can. Anybody can own a tank and anybody with a clean record, a butt ton of money and who lives in a county with a gun friendly Sheriff and state laws can own a rocker launcher (or machine gun).

It is not legal anywhere in the US to buy a working rocket launcher nor can you own a tank with a functioning canon. Stop being ridiculous and cut out the hyperbole. All US politicians are pro gun control in some way.

Checking if someone isn't a felon is gun control.

you can own both of those things. cite for owning a rocket launcher and cite for owning a fully functional tank (and it reiterates the fact that you can own a rocket launcher)
All US politicians are pro gun control in some way.
no they aren't. Some want to limit magazine size (for one example) and others don't.
Checking if someone isn't a felon is gun control.
yep

No, her complaint was clearly that she doesn't consider this a sufficient cut.

She’s largely complaining that it isn’t a cut at all but rather an accounting shell game that DiBlasio is playing.

As a couple of examples they decided to put off planned hiring of 1000 new cops (for a department that is three times the size of the Canadian Army) and moved the crossing guard function, which used to fall under the police to a different agency. The current operating budget was largely untouched.

As well the city is looking at an 8 billion dollar budget shortfall because of covid so even without the defund the police movement the PD was going to take a hit.

And don't forget, just not paying overtime anymore. That'll reform the police... or something.

Just how insane has the US become that you expect to be set-upon by murderous thugs at any moment?
I'm sat here with my windows wide open and not a single Ninja has hopped in and killed me in 44 years. Maybe I'm just really, really lucky though.

The fear of crime by you guys is bloody amazing.
