Protests over George Floyd's death continued for a fifth day Saturday following another night of violent unrest in Minneapolis and St. Paul and other cities across the U.S. Arrests have been made across the country.

Minnesota's governor has fully mobilized the state's National Guard, and the Pentagon has put military police on alert to go to Minneapolis. The units are on notice to return to their bases within 30 minutes, which is the last alert stage before actually receiving an order, CBS News' David Martin reports.

They're getting ready to put down these dumb idiots that have (as usual) obliterated their communities.

About time, Trump! I would've curbed that insane destruction the second night.

I would have preferred curbing it the first night.

I've lived through several riots in L.A. and New York City back in "the day."

Problem is, the people involved in the "rioting" parts only ended up destroying local businesses, and inhibiting new businesses from investing.

Essentially burning our own house down...cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Meanwhile it was more often than not mostly people who were seeking to trash and burn for kicks and free stuff.

The true protesters were often found in gatherings in the face of local authority trying do it with words and signs, not rocks and firebombs.

Tear gassing the first wave of peaceful protesters caused most of this. So the solution to quell riots caused by over policing is more policing?

Looting is bad but shouldn't we be looking for some solution to calm the public instead of escalating interactions between angry civilians and police? I get that if we don't arrest anyone people might take advantage of getting away with sh*t. We shouldn't rely on control through force though. If people are angry we shouldn't scare them into calming down.

More arresting is why Hong Kong is still in chaos, we should learn from their mistakes not copy and paste them.

I’d prefer we do not need protests stemming from awful and senseless police actions, meaning white police officers not killing restrained and unarmed black males.

But hey, you “conservatives” enjoy the beat down circle jerk.

Note - we are not condoning the looting and riots, but this was all avoidable.

Man, I'm so torn by this. No, I would not tolerate this type of rioting. But neither would I tolerate the actions of the police year, after year, after year.

It's a terrible reflection that a segment of society feels they need to do this to get heard. That's the root of the problem.

Do you have some suggestions?

Maybe introducing reforms on police discipline, announcing the creation of an independent agency to investigate allegations of police brutality, tightening up recruitment and training, etc.

If you haven't seen this... This guy is spot on

They got tear gassed because the police were met with hostile aggression.

The Michiganders recently and perfectly demonstrated against the state Capitol without resorting to violence, even though they were armed for war.

I forgot to add the link to the story. Apologies. George Floyd protest arrests live updates from Minneapolis, Atlanta, New York City, Washington, Los Angeles

Bold strategy. I think they sound great. Could we get this organized before the riots tonight? Would it be operational before more people are killed and injured in these demonstrations, or do we need to do something else to protect life and property until Monday when these systems can get up and running?

What would you have done? Let me guess, start shooting civilians. Sure are a lot of dumb idiots protesting around the country. It couldn't possibly a continuation of the civil rights struggle could it?

Peaceful prolonged protests about this issue could've been much more efficient. Killing multiple innocent people and destroying jobs and businesses is no excuse over the wrongful death of one man.

All they have to do is announce and then start drafting the required legislation, they had time. Both state and local government.

One man. Uh huh. Tell that to the many black families who have had members killed by cops. One man. Get your head out of your arse.

Riots are the language of the unheard.

They're not rational acts - they are a mob-driven phenomena. Expressions of the collective conscious.

Trump, in his pitifully faux-aggressive tweets, is trying to draw on the "law and order" appeal to older boomers - but he hasn't grasped how the world has changed.

The moment the "military" comes in and bullets start flying, innocent protestors will die.

And all those boomers remember Kent State.

The many black families? Out of how many were criminals? Your statement is too general.

Again one man does not equal a thousand crimes.

Those innocent protesters have already been dying due to the actions of the numerous monkeys going wild in Minneapolis.

The military needs to step in. Cities across the country are becoming unsafe and getting out of control.

What innocent protestors have been killed by rioters?

They had a free run on the city for 3 days.

Geeees........seriously?

That's a lie.
