My comment about anarchists being extreme right was kind of tongue-in-cheek- it's hard to find a spot anywhere on the spectrum to park them. I've heard them called 'liberals' here, but there's people here who think socialists are liberals.

A very long time ago, I remember reading a treatise claiming that as we go along the political continuum in opposite directions from the middle, at the very furthest radical extremes both sides of the political spectrum wrap around to come to have commonality. I do believe this is true. And, I can see anarchy existing in that place.

But in general terms, I generally see anarchy placed at the extreme radical Left. I also see anarchy occasionally have kinship with Libertarianism, when Libertarianism is to it's farthest extreme.

And to further muddy the waters: Differing from where it's often placed colloquially today, Libertarianism is essentially a modern-day extension of Classical Liberalism, with the understanding that Classical Liberalism differs from what many today politically paint as "Liberal".

I think the term 'classic liberalism' is more important in the US than elsewhere, mostly because American conservatives want liberalism to include a bunch of social and political evils that just don't fit under the 'liberal' umbrella. I've had conservatives here tell me that socialism is a liberal ideology, for example. Here, in Canada, we have the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party and the NDP, the New Democratic Party, where the socialists and progressives live. I'm a life-long Liberal but I support the NDP being in an opposition role, kind of a Jiminy Cricket on the shoulder of the governing party. And I have a problem with the current leader of the party because he's going too far to the left.
Here's how I see it in my admittedly biased opinion- American conservatives revere the Founding Fathers (should that term be capitalised? Feels like it should) and when they realized that those guys were liberals, among the first liberals, the conservatives needed to devise a way that they were the heirs of the founders so they coined the term 'classical liberalism' because then they could define it in a way that made those founders easier to portray as conservatives. Conservatives in the eastern seaboard were booking it to Canada when the revolution started but history can be revised as easily as definitions.
And yeah, anarchy probably should be put on the left, more because of how the individual anarchists arrived at that philosophy than because of the nature of the ideology.

The term got Americanized with the symbol and the cookbook to mean basically a terrorist who believes in nothing. I wonder how all that started tbh.

But, if you read up on Anarchism you'll study people like Pierre Proudhon, Peter Kropotkin, Mikhail Bakunin. All 19th century intellectuals whose writing can trace their lineage to Marx.

It is a compelling argument and also very intriguing. I still stand by my earlier statement that the people who are vandalizing property and looting stores probably could not care less about the politics surrounding the protests. They are very likely using the protests as a smokescreen to loot and pillage.
