Trump threatens to crack down on social media platforms after Twitter labels his tweets

Um, the screening caught those 77 votes.

Yeah, over a year later. Which is why randomly mailing ballot applications to every person in the State with a pulse (or otherwise) was/is a bad idea.

So, to clarify:

On what grounds would you want action taken against Twitter? What law have they broken? What have they done that is morally wrong? Why is it a problem to provide a link to fact-checking?

You want the government to take over or destroy a privately-owned platform because of something they posted on the platform they own?

Something something net neutrality, natural monopolies, etc. The grounds don't actually matter. I support action against Twitter for the same reason leftists oppose it, because Twitter uses its power to promote the left and censor the right, which in general equates to promoting evil and suppressing good.

Trump threatens to crack down on social media platforms after Twitter labels his tweets - CNNPolitics

It all started a week ago with Trump's tweet:

Now, there are things here objectively wrong.
1) Trump's original tweet claimed absentee ballots were sent. It was actually ballot applications. He since corrected that.
2) It was not illegal to do so.
3) No authorization from the president is required to do this.

Later, we run into this:

Twitter put a fact check link on his mail-in ballot claims. Here, he's claiming everyone living in the state gets one. That's false. The ballots are being sent to registered voters.

Furthermore, the idea that this leads to "massive voter fraud" is completely false. Absentee ballots have been around for ages. Trump himself voted by mail, but wants to deny you the opportunity to do so.

Trump has lost his **** at being fact-checked by Twitter. So much so that he's gone on an unhinged rant about censorship, the first amendment, etc. He's even threatened to "regulate or even shut down" social media sites. Naturally, we'll see conservatives in this thread defend this.

The man is psychotic. I challenge any conservative here to go to Trump's twitter feed and read just one week of Trump's tweets. (in getting these screenshots, the sheer volume of the deranged posting left me shocked. I normally only see bits and pieces because I don't go to twitter directly)

That's right folks. You're stifling free speech if you post a fact-check link that disagrees with the president!

You have to remember that it is a violation of Mr. Trump's First Amendment Rights for anyone to say "I don't think that he is telling the truth, but you should check the facts for yourself.".

It would NOT, however, in "Trumpland" be a violation of the Constitution of Trumpland for the President of Trumpland to administer the existing laws of Trumpland so as to quash anyone who had the temerity to violate his First Amendment Rights (to the Constitution of Trumpland) by saying "I don't think that he is telling the truth, but you should check the facts for yourself.".

Good bye.

Irritated that someone on the right has figured out the left's game?

Don't worry. Most conservatives still believe in process. Even as it kills them.

I wouldn't dream of defending it. Defense implies that the thing being defended was wrong or unseemly in some way. Which Trump's threat was not.

I unambiguously support Presidential action against Twitter. Though I doubt it could actually happen.

Well, don't come telling us that you live the Constitution then, because clearly you do not. You're entitled to your view, but it goes against the founding principles of the nation.

And yet, as Ohio discovered, there isn’t adequate screening of those applications to reject those submitted by people who are not eligible to vote. In 2018, at least 77 illegal absentee ballots were found in Ohio ultimately because legal residents who aren’t eligible to vote were automatically sent ballot applications anyway and those applications were submitted and somehow approved.

77 in the whole state of Ohio?

So the 1st amendment can go to hell when it suits you? When did 'conservatives' start wanting the government to violate the constitution?

Free speech actually was one of the "founding principles".

But in any case, the legacy constitution hasn't actually been America's governing law for at least 80 years.

Free speech is against the first amendment. You people really will believe anything that advances your own power, won't you?

For the sake of discussion only, I'm going to accept your 77 and express my shock and horror that as many as 0.0017% of the Ohio 2018 votes MIGHT have not been legally cast.

Free Speech was one of the founding principles - including the right to say the President is full of ****.

There was a Reddit "Ask Trump Supporters" thread that had one post just hit the nail on the head harder than I've ever seen. From a Trump supporter:

"I think what most liberals are missing is that this isn't about right and wrong, it's about winning and losing. I've attached my entire worldview to this man and I am going down with the ship. Not one of you is going to convince me otherwise."

Way to coherent and truthful answer to be a real Trump supporter.

He should be careful, Twitter does not actually have to give a reason to cancel your account. He has threatened this before but did not push it, if he does they Will cancel his account and rightly so.

I vehemently hope they do. And quickly.

No they won't.

77 in the whole state of Ohio?

Yes, and they weren't undocumented, They were green card holders or had work permits.

Seventy-seven apparent non-citizens voted in Ohio's general election in November 2018, the state's top election official said Wednesday, and another 277 were able to successfully register in violation of state law.
The announcement from Republican Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose -- coming after years of GOP warnings of massive voter fraud -- means that of the 4,496,834 ballots cast in Ohio on November 6, 2018, just .002% of them were illegal.

LaRose's office said those caught are in the US legally, but do not hold US citizenship, and have been referred for investigation and prosecution by the state attorney general. A spokesman for Attorney General Dave Yost said his office was in the process of reviewing the matter.

77 is limited to those cases where the person is a legal resident but not a US citizen and is therefore ineligible to vote. That represents 0.002% of the vote. There aren’t published totals on how many illegal ballots were cast by people who are eligible to vote, but there have been some high profile prosecutions for it here. Our SOS readily admits they have no way of knowing exactly how big the problem is, but it does exist.

While it may not be enough to change the outcome of a Presidential election - it certainly could be for State or local elections and especially those that are close. And if the SOS doesn’t have the means to find these issues until over a year after the election and not all of them even in that length of time, both being the case here, then it can very easily cast a shadow of illegitimacy on election results.

Its not free speech. Twitter is a company, just like this discussion board.

That you fail to understand that is boggling.

No, you openly admitted that you have no basis for what you said. You just hate liberals. There's nothing to debate, you admitted that already.

But hey, congrats to you. You're a lot more honest than most conservatives. They pretend to have a principled basis for their beliefs. You just openly accept being a fascist. That's great.

Oh? Perhaps you missed the Senate Impeachment hearings? Oh wait.

Huh. I wonder why the President of the United States of America would object to his social media posts being fact checked?

Does he not post honestly and responsibly?

Of course I'd understand it for a 14 yr old trying to impress his peers, trying to be cool, trying to get his way, even trying to bully others....

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

That would be an awesome show!

I'd love to see that meltdown.

So much for voter ID then. If you can't screen a ballot application you can't screen an ID application.
