Well what happened is the citizens of Florida voted to allow felons the right to vote after serving their sentence. The legislature, worried that it may mean more minorities voting since they make up such a large chunk of the prison population, tried to undercut the will of the people by creating further artificial hurdles that had not existed before.

Right, because if you let the dumb people vote their candidates might do things that aren't good for the power structure, and we can't have that, you know, so some literacy tests to cull those voters out of the voting pool is kind of like natural selection I think, and that's a good thing in nature and is a good thing for Democracy. The founding fathers weren't idiots, and neither were white people in the South. Once you let the dumb blacks and white trash have a say, well, things can go to hell in a hurry, so voting isn't a right but a privilege to be doled out by those in power only to deserving voters.

Pay to stay out of prison?

Yeah, that's how you get people to stop being criminals.

You do know that there are a lot of good people in this country who vote that still use their mark because they never learned to read and write. They are not stupid. Some went to work as a child to keep from starving to death.

Just stating the facts. Oh and I have nothing against felons who made a mistake and turned their life around. I actually have lot more respect for them than the people who think they should never be forgiven.

Don't we have legal definitions between felony and misdemeanor for exactly this purpose? I'm not blind to the abuses of the police, but how can one be charged for a felony over something that's clearly defined as a misdemeanor?

No, it literally had nothing to do with felons, the joke that person said that if a school diploma was needed to vote, almost all Trump voters would unable to vote.

The only problem with them was in the execution and there's little risk the power structure will use literacy tests to selectively disenfranchise only those voters who won't vote the right way, which is all an 'informed' vote is, amirite?
I thought I sensed sarcasm... no more than people being affected by other state mandated tests...

Have you ever heard of plea bargaining. When your name is Kennedy and you kill someone in a traffic accident and go home and to bed instead of reporting it you get to be a renowned Senator. If you are a poor person of color and kill a senators daughter and instead of reporting it you go home and wait for the police to find you, you become a felon and you are still sitting in prison today.
