As states across the country have gradually pushed forward with reopening in recent weeks, protesters representing a small but apparently growing movement — especially within the Republican Party — have continued to push for it to go faster. And one very visible thing has somehow turned into a perceived political statement: wearing a mask.

A reporter at a Minnesota news station — one who happens to be an old college friend of mine — was even harassed this week for wearing a mask while covering these protests.

Across the border in North Dakota, though, GOP Gov. Doug Burgum on Friday offered a plea to stop the madness.

He stated that the subject of wearing/not wearing masks was being politicized into a senseless culture war between right & left that will cost countless lives.

Didn't we already discuss this?

Who would have thought that wearing a mask during a pandemic would be part of identity politics?

We are in the dumbest timeline.

Trump not wearing a mask has been a catalyst here. It's macho right winger vs. non-macho left winger. Emotional instead of rational. 'Mine are bigger than yours.'

Its amazing that we, as a nation, have sunk to this kind of a low. Its depressing.

Thank Trump.

Trump is a symptom, not the cause. If you want the cause you can go all the way back to Rush Limbaugh turning politics into an us vs them bloodsport and the Newt Gingrich for using this approach in the political arena.

Yep... every single damn thing has been turned into part of the culture war.

It isn't helpful.

Who would have thought that creating an interconnected telecommunications system where people around the world could gather and share ideas would simply amplify the dumbest among us?

Marginalized and disenfranchised individuals have been able to connect via the the internet. They've used this new media to normalize their particular issues, conspiracy theories, etc. Its a problem.

FOX News has been telling it's watchers they have nothing to worry about and things will be okay if the economy recovers. Every televangelist selling snake oil cures should be tried for misleading citizens. Every single official out there who doesn't have the background to be telling people what medicines to take, but has gotten on a podium to do so, should be investigated.

The are a lot of people with blood on their hands. Even when governors admitted mistakes in the early handling, there were people begging folks to disobey official state policies. Including our president.

The right went full stupid, and forgot viruses don't care about Trump's divinity.

Last night I dreamed that Trump, along with all Governors, made it mandatory to wear a mask to enter the next phase of easing restrictions.
