World of Warcraft release revives concern over games addiction

Irony....

...weren't we just talking about buying gold?

That's called target marketing. :)

I haven’t logged in for 21 days…no withdraw symptoms…doesn’t seem like an addiction to me.

I haven't logged on for just over 2 weeks, already i'm getting tetchy and wondering what has been happening.
I'm seeing if i can last one month without logging on ...

I quit back in April of '08. I'm not sure if I was ever addicted to the game, but I somehow made High Warlord on our server! ;)

Ahhh, the days before The Burning Crusade...

Anyone here besides me have Twilight title & the 3D mount?

:)

I used to play World of Warcraft, I played for a year and a few months. A few of my good friends played, they got me into it. I, personally, don't feel like I was trying to escape from anything (though I suppose the argument could be made; that all depends on how Freudian you are). I thought it was fun, and I didn't have a helluva lot to do anyway. I quit this past August, right before Wrath of the Lich King. I had a level 70 character, an enhancement shaman, the highest shaman DPS'er on the server, in the second best guild, et cetera. At that point, I sort of felt like I'd beat the game; furthermore, a tough year was starting up for me and I figured I'd need the time to focus on my studies (I was right about that). Although I played for many hours some days, I didn't feel as though I was addicted; every time my subscription would run out, or my computer would break down, or the internet would conk out for a few days, I'd find something else to do real easy, and not even think about it. So that's my story, anyway. I hardly even play games anymore, somewhat peculiar for someone my age.

I miss the days when I was playing WOW for the first time, it was really good and exciting, now I'm kinda bored at it and I'm still paying for it.

Plus what really annoys me is when you reach top level, some people treat you really badly if you don't know certain things. There really is alot of nerdy wankers on that game.

I bet it's the same 'oll same 'oll "LFM heals H-Naxx prof tree/pally be geared pst"..and "Get your [Black Bear] mount!! LF Heals and lots o DPS for [For the Alliance], leaving in 30min pst"

Unles the patch is out...then the duel spec would be fun to play with and there's likely an influx of hunters in Arina.

You can't get those titles anymore either. You keep 'em if you have 'em, but no one else can ever get it.

That must be before my time, I have no idea what those are :doh

So true. At lvl79 ppl were like "way to go, not much longer now"...and the instant you ding ppl r like "what do you mean you don't have full T7 and know every fight in the game? Are you playing on someone else's account?"

What ....ed me off were the horde of n00bs who saw someone at max lvl n assumed that person no longer had anything better to do then run them through DM 10 times (for free, of course).

He's all happy snappy because he dropped Sarth w/3 drakes up, thus the title Twilight plus the drake mount.

Dire Maul?

Dead Mines = VC (Van Cleef) ;)

Been playing Everquest since 2000. Addicted? maybe, but it is far cheaper than most other forms of entertainment and addictions. Never liked Warcraft much... too cartoony and too many 12 year olds wanting to duel. Plus it was far too easy.

Aaah, blissful memories. Have you tried Vanguard SoH by chance? IMO it's everything EverQuest 2 should have been and more. Brad McQuaid isn't the greatest programmer or manager in the world, but I think he nailed that old EQ "magic" again with Vanguard. Its only real problem now is the low population, because a rushed and terrible launch drove people away and they haven't been back. :(

77 now and finally getting to do some actual 5 man instances with a group in Northrend that have been fun.

Can't wait to finally hit 80 and get to run through some of the Raids with my groups of friends back home. Though thier on Ulduar already so I need to gear up a bit even once I hit 80.

For the Horde

Heh, by the time I got my flying mount I was already done and leaving Outland unfortunantely, so this is my first experience with flying outside of just screwing around a bit. Its useful for getting around any random fights or when there's not a straight line....but with a straight line the epic land still seems more efficient.

Oh yea, the epic ground mount is way faster than the basic flyer. But the epic flyer leaves them all in the dust. It seems almost as fast as the FPs you pay for. Best (and only!) 5k I ever spent. =)

Nope. Was put off by the PVP aspect that it was promoted as, plus the crappy launch and high spec requirements. I hate PVP games with a passion... another reason I dislike WoW. And that is the main problem with most of the games coming out now and since WoW.. all have been promoted as a PVP game.. If I want to do PVP, then I have this thing called Real life.. enough PVP in that :)

I've managed to avoid PVP for 77 levels. The first of any kind of "PVP" I did was in a quest last night, where 9 of the kills was actually NPC's and one was a PC I just happened to run into. And the quest was optional.

While at launch it may've been different, its now got a large number of populated PvE servers which has PVP only in specified locations or through specified quests.

Heh, that is when I started playing EQ as well.

MMO addiction is very real. People who do not fit in well in regular society find that they can fit in well in MMO society, and are drawn to the social scene where they do well.

I guess I never saw those promotions for heavy PVP in the game. In truth it's nowhere near Warhammer or even WoW in terms of PVP focus. There is one PVP server (Sartok) out of 4, and you can /duel people on the care bear servers, but the remaining 99% of the game is based entirely on PVE much like WoW questing. In my experience it's no more focused on PVP than EverQuest.

The launch and the first two years were extremely crappy no doubt. They've done a great job patching it though. It's still laggy/hitchy in big cities and when you enter a complex area for the first time, (I think their texture caching mechanisms are terrible), but it's a very stable game now and I get 60-80+ framerates in most wilderness areas.

Heh, I found out the hard way that my crappy Altel internet card can't support the bandwidth for 25 mans :(

I do my business in Iron Forge, so while waiting for customers to show up and get mats for chants, titansteel smelt, etc, some n00bs in Stormwind start pst'ing me wanting consecutive runs through Dead Mines and Stocks.

Being a capitalist, I don't say no, I state my price (which can go up or down depending on if I have planes at the time they ask). 10g per run for a group or 15g per run solo. The typical response is usually something like "lol wut there's not that much money in the whole game n00b nm".

Friends and guild are free, but some nobody that just expects max lvl toons to be at their disposal is going to pay.

A tip for anyone going up through the levels for the first time: Visit your race's n00b aria now and then and offer gold/help for nothing. You won't regret it.

I felt the WoW PvP system was rather poorly made, and I avoided it for the most part, focusing on 25-man raids (BC time). I enjoyed that much more than anything in PvP, and I think for most players, that's what most of the game is, PvE and raids and such.
