Why would then admit his guilt before a judge in open court?

And WHY was Flynn lying in the first place?

It has everything to do with Mueller.
Comey never sought to have Mr. Flynn prosecuted for the alleged misrepresentations.
That was on the Mueller.
Yesterday, the classified addendum by Rosenstein to Mueller was released. It showed that Mueller was to investigate Flynn for lying to the FBI.
For the sake of lying to the FBI. There was no claim being made as to the whether there was a good faith investigation occurring on Mr. Flynn. Which, as per the law, is a requirement.

The notion that Russia could have blackmailed Flynn with information that the USA already knew is laughable.

Flynn had his trial. He then admitted to the judge in court that he indeed was guilty.

He was not tortured until he pled guilty. He came forward on his own and told the judge he was guilty.

Well, the law requires that in order for the government to investigate a person, they need to have a good faith reason for doing so.
The FBI had none.
The law also requires that in order for misrepresentations to a government official to be a crime, that misrepresentation must concern a "material" fact to the investigation.
Since the government has been unable to show what the good faith reason for investigating Mr Flynn was (and the information coming out over the last week conforms there was no good faith reason) there could not have been a misrepresentation of a "material" fact. Ergo, no crime.

Why did he" lie?" Maybe because he was questioned without the benefit of reviewing the actual transcript so as to refresh his memory of an inconsequential conversation that had happened a month earlier. People, after all, do forget things.

Yep-- and as Flynn has been arguing, he pled guilty because the government (ie Mueller) said he would not prosecute his son.
And then the government chose not reveal that information to the judge in his plea deal.

Flynn admitted lying to FBI agents about his dealings with the Russian ambassador during the presidential transition and making false statements about Trump transition officials’ lobbying on a United Nations resolution condemning Israel. Flynn also acknowledged that he signed Foreign Agent Registration Act filings that contained false statements about his work on a lobbying and advocacy project related to Turkey.

All this was before a federal judge in court.

I see. You're one of those who ascribes near mythical superman capabilities to Vladimir Putin. The short, egotistical joke of a leader of what is almost a failed state (depending on international petrochemical prices) .

Putin is only a real threat to reporters and corporate leaders in his own country.

And Donald Trump was arguably just about the last person the GOP wanted to nominate.

Nope-- as the Flynn debacle shows, there continues to be no credible evidence that the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to fix the 2016 election.

Sure. The fact that they bankrupted him, threatened his family, lied to him and withheld evidence had nothing to do with his decision. I sincerely hope neither you nor any member of your family is put in this position.

I don't know why that should be controversial or objectionable.
When the FBI interviewed Flynn in Jan 2016, they had no good faith reason for doing so. So, under the law, its not possible for there to have "material" fact lied about.

The stuff about FARA? Nothing to do here. There have been about half dozen prosecutions on that since the laws were on the book over 70 years ago. If there is a problem, the usual solution is for the person to simply resubmit.

Flynn also acknowledged that he signed Foreign Agent Registration Act filings that contained false statements about his work on a lobbying and advocacy project related to Turkey.

He did all this in a court off law before a federal judge who after hearing his confession wondered aloud why he was not charged with treason against the United States.
