Talking to reporters before departing the White House, President Trump said his administration is considering an "enforceable quarantine" on New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus, suggesting he’d discussed it with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo—who immediately denied he had.

  • "We might not have to do it but there's a possibility that sometime today we'll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks," Trump said, adding the quarantine would entail restricted travel and it would be enforceable.

So if you've been thinking about going to stay with your Aunt Winnie in Savannah until all of this coronavirus crap clears up, you better hurry!

Probably already too late. I'm from another metro area, and both of my closest neighbors took-off for their out-of-state summer home/cabin over a week ago. And we're nowhere near as hot as NY (yet). I bet most New Yorkers that were going to head-out already have. But after Trump's words, I wouldn't want to be on I-95!

Well, if Trump does would there be any objection?

I am not going to say if it would be good or bad, not at this point.

I am curious about how all those who have been saying his actions are just "not good enough" if they think this is a reasonable and responsible thing to do.

Especiallly when Mayor De Blasio has declared NY as the epicenter of the US outbreak.

From a containment perspective, it's the responsible thing to do. I would have loved to head out somewhere else more isolated than where I am now, but didn't think it would be the right thing to do. If people move around the country (especially from highly infected areas) then they're helping the spread.

The coronavirus is spreading more rapidly in red states right now. I haven't heard trump call for a quarantine on them. I can't imagine why.

There's been a mass exodus out of New York...and they're traveling to places all over the country...

People leaving NYC metro area to self quarantine for 14 days

Don't even think about leaving New York City

Tensions mount between New Yorkers with the means to retreat to their second homes and those who live in the towns year round.

It's probably wise to just treat everyone you meet like they're infected now. But some of the precautions are really intense....oy.

How often are you going to repeat that lie?

Trump, looking at map: "We need to quarantine New York. That'll contain the virus."

All this hullabaloo about quarantining three states is ridiculous and it's all coming from the crying little bitch Ron DeSantis. He's moaning because people are fleeing the city and heading to their other homes in Florida.

I have two NY DOT web cams up, both are the Cross Bronx Expressway that leads to the George Washington bridge into New Jersey. I couldn't believe my eyes. Never saw such a thing in my life.

Why cross at the GW? If you're heading out of town anyway then just go on up to the Tappan Zee and avoid the toll.

People all around the country have been sheltering in place for three weeks now. An enforced quarantine would chafe my libertarian values.

Yeah, we've had the same phenomenon here along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Many people from New Orleans have second homes in Hancock and Pearl River Counties, and they're here.

A few weeks ago Trump was being called bigot and a xenophobe for restricting travel from certain countries such as China. Now these countries can't close their own borders fast enough.

Hey, welcome back! What did you do this time?

Regarding your post - DeSantis was one of the last governors to close beaches, bars and restaurants. through his own negligence, he's directly responsible now for people currently sick and dying - what a sociopathic hypocrite he is!

Wow! That's Christie's little traffic study? Krist, I could probably take a quick nap in the center lane!

As for DiSantis, most of his problem is probably from his screwing-up Spring Break, same as the NOLA Mardi Gras effect. But baby - he sure wanted that Spring Break NYC college kid money, didn't he? Against all sane advice? He was warned, and now he bought it. Good luck in November, governor.

Exactly. DeSantis was universally warned to call-off Spring Break. He didn't. Now he soon faces an election. Good luck.

And that goof in Texas that's telling everyone to go out & have a good time? He's another responsible idiot. I wouldn't doubt if he joins Boris Johnson in positive quarantine before this is over. These guys are far too reckless to be in a position of authority during a time like this.

Here's an idea. Do it, or don't do it, instead of just yammering about it.

What an attention whore.

Several comments:

-- he has no authority to do it.
-- every state has Corvid-19. The virus will now spread from within their own borders and over the borders of states not quarantined.

You mean DeSantis, who won't close Florida beaches, is complaining?

I live in South Jersey a stones throw from Phila. All liquor stores in PA are closed, but not in NJ. The liquor stores on major routes in SJ are starting to see an enormous amount of people coming to buy Liquor, wine and beer. This could become a problem

I was just poking around the map, and sad-to-say there's really no Gulf or Southeastern states that aren't growing, and most are getting lit-up. MS & AL may be doing the best, but if you use the Johns-Hopkins map you'll see those two states may lack the large urban explosion of some other states, but the distribution is consistent and omnipresent literally everywhere across them.

Yeah, for most places on the East Coast & Southeast Coast, that bird has already flown. And FL? Geezus, they are well on their way to being one of the top hit states. Other states may start wanting to keep them out! I have no idea what Desantis is crowing about keeping infected out. He's state's already out of control. And it seems to be everywhere, not just Miama-Dade (though the I-95 Corridor does seem to be particularly heavy).

1. And if there are any slackers make an announcement, right?

2. History has proven that when it comes to a national emergency and ensuring the public health and safety the government has done pretty much whatever it wanted to do. If it can restrict movement on a temporary basis in the leadup or aftermath of a natural disaster like a hurricane, I don't see why it couldn't during an epidemic. For example, I-10 was closed to all eastbound traffic coming from Louisiana into Mississippi hours before Hurricane Katrina hit. The government basically said, "Keep your ass out of here. Go North."

3. Yes, but they don't have it to the same degree. New York is apparently the worst, so it would be beneficial to the rest of us for them to remain in place.
