The president in a statement said the federal government had abandoned negotiations with the automaker on ventilator production, complaining that the automaker was "wasting time."

"Our negotiations with GM regarding its ability to supply ventilators have been productive, but our fight against the virus is too urgent to allow the give-and-take of the contracting process to continue to run its normal course," Trump said.

Trump has finally done something right in this crisis. Shame on GM for offering help only to demand a billion dollars to retrofit their factories. Good on Trump for ordering them to shove it and eat the cost.

they won't eat the cost. they'll screw their employees or vendors or pass on the cost somehow.

GM is a piece of crap. Riasing the price of Ventilators from 20,000$ to 25,000$ each. When each one should cost 5-8,000$ but they have a inflated monopoly on the product. We should be tearing GM's stock prices even further into the ground and look for new honest producers.

25,000$ per ventilator during a time of crisis.....

i thought socialism was when the government dictates the means of the production. can't remember if we are supposed to like that or not.

Good on Trump, but curious how the world's best negotiator failed to negotiate and had to use the DPA.

Now is no time to play coy. You know exactly why: because he's a galaxy-class asshat.

Ha

and it all happens as the fiercely independent and manly republicans take a Gov bailout.

Before you do that be sure to notify Congress so they can sell their stock.

Nevertheless, now that Republicans are in favor of this sort of thing I wonder if something similar to the DPA might be used to say, I don't know, control the prices of drugs or healthcare. Many medications seem to be ridiculously marked up.

Didn't we bail GM out a while back?

They built tanks during WW2. They can build ventilators or such now.

I think this is a necessary action, but also can't help but wonder what our fellow Trump colleagues would be saying if *gasp* someone like Hillary had been President and done this.

I am glad he finally bowed down to the pressure to do so. I hope it's not too little, or too late.

Why did he do this? He said we don't need that many ventilators.

Sadly most of those who go on respirators are not making it. This according my daughter who is an ER nurse in Seattle

I like the "Lean:" field. It is interesting when you see a "Libertarian" not only advocate for the State to seize the means of production from private hands but also maliciously work to destroy shareholder wealth.

He did a quick poll, discovered that Trump supporters are actually to the left of Bernie Sanders, and did what needed to be done to keep their support.

We saved GM from oblivion during the financial crisis only for them to turn around and try to price gouge us on ventilators. No. We’re taking what is owed now.

"Finally" done something?

You probably need to stop depending on faux news.

It's a little less entertaining when a "Moderate" does it.

People seem to be coming around to the fact that capitalism is a failure. Interesting trend.

This is the first real action Trump has delivered on this pandemic since closing the borders to China in January.

Maybe someone showed him this study that projects the need for from 10,000 to 40,000 ventilators in the next four months.
