White House eyes giving Americans checks to combat economic impact of outbreak

Spoken like the true republican you are. You can call yourself whatever you wish but as one of the top trump supporters on here, in my mind that makes you a republican.

No. That doesn't make me a Republican. It only makes me a Trump supporter.

You DO know that "Republican" is a club, right? I don't join clubs (herds).

Just pass on down to the grandchildren.

I can see a number of families going to have financial difficulties during these times. But myself, I don't need a $1,000, I will be okay.
Same for people making 10-20 million a year but they will get one too.

I think they need to put stipulations on this but then it would get you more votes if everyone receives it.

Yes, but add in those are 2019 financial numbers, so how many laid off now would not qualify for help, due to their employment

Canada has a few cash payment directly to families, GST rebate and (CTB) Child Tax Benefit

GST I think is every 3 months

The CTB, may be the same or monthly, unsure

CPP Disability

Rev Can for low incomes and how checks would impact those people, not all are families

So our Govt can readily access data and work out max amounts of income to qualify for what is expected, checks sent to families.

The US has a larger poverty problem than Canada, but ours is still to high

Far to many in both our countries, make it pay check to pay check. Any saving/small reserve can be quickly depleted.

These people are the hardest hit during an economic downturn, and as I see it, a long term world wide recession/minor depression

The world will significantly change over the next year or 2

Hey, I've sent them enough checks over the years, time they returned the favor. :lamo

So typical, when it's for you, it's owed to you. When it's for someone else, it's socialism. Of course you have a reason to tell yourself why you are accepting the money. Heck ten reasons and none of them are socialism.

Lol, you are the cheerleader for the folks who have their lips stuck to trump's butt.

i hope that the house stops the payroll tax elimination part. that will seriously **** with those programs, and it seems like that's the point, along with being a poison pill so that cultist candidates can say that the big bad Democrats nixed the relief bill. pull that part out and send it back to the Senate.

About 90% of SS funds and 38% for Medicaid

An ffn disaster, but his companies now under financial pressure from the downturn would reap substantial savings

I hear Moscow Mitch is all for this bailout and stimulus... Funny in 2010 he's on video saying the GOP's #1 priority then was making Obama a 1 term president, nothing else. He was saying the GOP wouldn't lift a finger to help the economy and the millions of people then losing their jobs and homes because of the Bush crash..And they held to that promise.

But now he's all for helping the economy... I wonder what changed.

The GOP is filled with awful people and must be voted out of office, forever.

When it comes to Mitch McTraitor, there can be No Quarter given to him by Democrats.

Do they remove your sense of humor when you attend progressive boot camp?

Handing out $$ to the people...what better way to ensure re-election?

If this trillion dollar thing goes through, we should really start taking a serious look at paying the national debt down. And I mean soon.

Raise taxes.
It doesn't seem that anybody cares about paying down the debt
The Republicans kept telling the lie that Obama doubled the debt when he didn't
and now that Trump is running it up even more then Obama did not one Republican is saying a word.
We really need to start looking into ways to pay off the debt
As I have suggested several times we need to have a 1% sales tax with NO exemptions or exemptions
Everybody has to pay it even large Corp. NO exemptions for paying this tax and NO exceptions EVERYBODY pays it we all got some benefit from running up the debt we all should pay it back
Put this sales tax in place and have it dedicated JUST to pay off the debt and NOTHING else and when it is paid off it would be suspended and could only be used again IF we had a recession / Depression where we had to run a debt OR if we had a war like WWII
we need to pay the debt off and as I said we all got some benefit from running it up so we all should help pay it off
Have a nice night

1. You are absolutely correct.

2. Those programs are already racing towards the cliff. Accelerating them now is bad, but not the thing that sends them over.

Giving everyone a thousand bucks (to spend on what? We're supposed to be staying in, making this a services/recreation based economic crises) is dumb, getting rid of FICA is dumb.

[soap box]

Attention idiot whore monkeys.... short-sighted fake money junkies.... policy makers: YOU CANNOT, ACTUALLY, "STIMULATE" THE ECONOMY IN A SHORT TERM WITHOUT DOING DAMAGE ELSEWHERE.

[/soap box]

If the goal is "increase consumption", then we need to accept that's going to mean "increase coronavirus transmission".

If the goal is "save the stock market", then we should be announcing long-term capital gains rate cuts.

If the goal is "help those who through no fault of their own or that of their employer will be out of work", then we need to focus on short-term unemployment benefits that end 2-4 weeks after the direction to self-quarantine as much as possible does.

the house needs to put the brakes on it.

i assume the grand is at least partially designed to help with mortgage and rent payments. a house sell off and eviction crisis during this stuff would be pretty bad, and would have larger economic consequences. however, that's only going to be a drop in the bucket if the retail and tipped server industries are shuttered for any extended amount of time.

Lol, you are the cheerleader for the folks who have their lips stuck to trump's butt.

Seriously? Do you HAVE to open your mouth and let your disgusting rhetoric spew out?

You should clean your mouth out with soap.

You are dismissed. (see my sig)

the house needs to put the brakes on it.

Did not know they were still seriously considering a suspension of all payroll tax

It has back in 08, slightly lowered, but not to zero

If they are that is just plain nuts

And how exactly could this have been handled properly in the first place and who was calling for this before everything went down?

22JAN20......”it’s one person from China!”

Hence let's not blow cash on a grand for every adult, but focus on the benefits that will be needed.

My Mnuchin check would go straight to my student loans.

And how exactly could this have been handled properly in the first place...

Travel bans, and greater restrictions at our ports and points of entry. Russia and Israel put these measures into effect, and now have 150 & 300 cases respectively, while the US approaches 6,000.

.. and who was calling for this before everything went down?

Certainly not the MSM, who regurgitated the corrupt WHO talking points which stated 'travel restrictions don't work', and 'we should be more concerned about xenophobia than Cov-19'. WaPo, whose owner is dependent on China as the manufacturing engine that powers Amazon, published an article which said xenophobia was a bigger threat than coronavirus. This was the prevailing group think of such media outlets circa January and February.

It's not socialism when he does it because he hates socialism, you see.

I'm all for mitigating the impact of this. I am just furious that these mother****ers had us borrowing a trillion per year in great times just to give a windfall to the richest. Now we'll be borrowing more against our children, and theirs. For a good reason, yes. But borrowing far more than we should have had to.

And we know the lying liars will just go right back to the old game once a D is in charge.

Tissue?

It's funny how they always have enough money for wall street and big companies, but they don't for ordinary people. The Fed initiated a repo program that injected $1.52 trillion into wall street banks--which, incidentally, is the exact amount of outstanding student loans. They've got money to bail out wall street, but not people who are struggling under the costs of education (which, incidentally, have been massively inflated by administrative costs demanded by the Nixon administration).

So we should just let struggling families starve? Unemployment only goes so far.
I found out today that my grandchildren won't be returning to school in Portland until April 28th because of a governor's order. Thankfully, their parents will be paid although not working as they are both educators. My point is to say that many families will lose their income in the months ahead. So I think it's safe to say that the stimulus to families is more about that than winning reelection.
