This story, while interesting, is incomplete. If this happened in the privacy of her home as she claims, who saw her and brought charges? There is also no mention of 'right wingers'.

There are some racists here, which George Bush referred to as 'the bigotry of low expectations'. The Democrats have always dealt in those terms. YouTube

Strom Thurmond did change Parties, as he should have, but 100's of others stayed within the Democratic Party. Byrd is a good example.

But the poster boy for the Democrats would be George Wallace, who won many delegates in the Northern States during his run for the Presidency.

"Following the shooting, Wallace won primaries in Maryland and Michigan. Wallace spoke at the Democratic National Convention from his wheelchair in Miami on July 11, 1972".

Wallace renounced his racism and apologized,
In the late 1970s, Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his past actions as a segregationist. He said that while he had once sought power and glory, he realized he needed to seek love and forgiveness.[note 2] In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: "I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over."[69] He publicly asked for forgiveness from black people.[69][70]

In the 1982 Alabama gubernatorial Democratic primary, Wallace's main opponents were Lieutenant Governor George McMillan and Alabama House Speaker Joe McCorquodale. In the primary, McCorquodale was eliminated, and the vote went to a runoff, with Wallace holding a slight edge over McMillan. Wallace won the Democratic nomination by a margin of 51 to 49 percent. In the general election, his opponent was Montgomery Republican Mayor Emory Folmar. Polling experts at first thought the 1982 election was the best chance since Reconstruction for a Republican to be elected as governor of Alabama.[citation needed] Ultimately, though, it was Wallace, not Folmar, who claimed victory.

During Wallace's final term as governor (1983–1987) he made a record number of black appointments to state positions,[71] including, for the first time, two black people as members in the same cabinet.

Yes, in the late 70's as your article mentions. But he didn't renounce his racism while running for President in 1972 and he won two northern States. He may have won more had he not been shot, and he still addressed the Democratic Convention.

You seem to be relying on your beliefs rather than actual history.

Here's a prominent Democrat who writs for the NY Times who is certainly suspicious of Whites though he doesn't say explicitly he hates them. Note also how what he mentions at the top of the article is actually about Democrats, though he doesn't mention that either. Maybe, like many Democrats, he just assumes that George Wallace must have been a Republican and Emmet Till wasn't murdered by Democrats. White won.

He is saying that people who see only a skin color and not the person, those people who are racist.

The racism of the mid 1960s who have been 50+ years behind of us. I just read the letter and I'm not seeing any hatred for all white people but hatred for white people who based their views of themselves and other on their skin color. He is shocked and saddened that a person who is as racist as Donald trump could find enough supporters at the ballot box to win the White House. He is not condemning all white people. He likely voted for Hillary, unless he voted 3rd party, which were just as white.

He admitted that he was a racist in the past and that he changed. I'm willing to give a person a chance if their apology and the current actions are sincere.
