First positive coronavirus case confirmed in R.I.

Tell us how well all that Socialism is working.

I've been to Sweden, Norway, Canada, and Finland. All great places. Have you right wing types really been convinced all these countries are hellholes?

Tell us how well all that Socialism is working.

How does the quality of the U.S. healthcare system compare to other countries?

From 1980 to 2015, the overall mortality rate in the United States fell 29%, compared to a 54% decline in comparable countries.

The U.S. ranks last among comparable countries on the Healthcare Access and Quality index with a score of 88.7.

The U.S. and comparable OECD countries have made progress in reducing Years of Life Lost’s over the last 25 years (down 23% and 42% respectively), although the U.S. continues to trail comparable countries by a significant margin

America does better than some of those 'socialist' countries when looking at "doing business", according to the World Bank, but it falls behind 5 other nations - New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, China, Denmark, Korea. The US is ranked at 55 for "Starting a Business" with New Zealand at #1

Thousands of people die every week from the flu. What makes this one different is how contagious it is and that there is no vaccine yet. Compromised and elderly people are at risk primarily, which is concerning to me because of my dad. Otherwise, it's not especially severe. Hope they can get a vaccine in place as soon as possible.

The coronavirus is, on average, 24 times deadlier than the flu.

I heard Cuba and Venezuela used to be great places.

If your over 90 and in bad health.

The average mortality rate for coronavirus is taken for the whole population, just as it is for the flu. The two viruses aren't being calculated any differently to arrive at their respective mortality rates. That means that the elderly are in a lot more trouble than they ever were with the flu.

Those aren't representative democracies. Sweden, Norway, Canada and Finland are.

I saw that you responded to another poster who said that the fatalities data is misleading because the 'average' age of people who died was 70+ years. But you have to understand something about averages. It's an arithmetic mean. Where half the data points will be below that mean, and half will be above. So plenty of people below the age of 70 have died from this virus. And really if I'm in that group below 70 years of age. I would rather not have find out how I would fare against it. Because you never know.

6 people in America have died from the coronavirus.

18,000 people have died from the flu.

The panic is WAY overboard. Just a more intense version of the hysteria over SARS, N1N1, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, West Nile, Mad Cow Disease, etc, etc.

But right now, it's politically expedient for the media to drive up the fear.

This isn't Ebola or the Bubonic Plague. It's basically a flu-like bug that is dangerous for people with respiratory issues or compromised immune system.

The panic is a bit overboard now because it hasn't spread that far yet (though it will). I think, however, it's something like the mortality rate of the flu is about 0.1% where as for Coronavirus it's about 2%. So it is "deadlier" than the flu.

What are the media suppose to say when the president sets up a special task force with the VP leading it and the Dept of Health declares an emergency?

Of course people panic. This is what us Americans do. Every damn thing is a panic with the low IQs in this country.

Hell, remember the Cabbage Patch dolls? People were fighing in the stores for them.

It all depend on on contagious it gets. if we get to a million cases, that means there will be 20000 deaths. If we only get several hundred ,then the death toll about 6

It certainly depends on that for sure. But I think from what the WHO and CDC are reporting, the coronavirus is apparently hella-contagious.

It seems to be more contagious, but not necessarily deadlier. It'll be more concerning if perfectly healthy people get it and die from it.

In fact, it looks like kids aren't much at risk at all. It's a case of the sniffles for them.

It's going to spread, and there's not much of anything anyone can do about it. Most people that get it will just go home sick and recover without ever really knowing they had it. That's what most people do with the flu.

It's going to be in the millions. That's what viral diseases like this do. And compromised people will be at risk just like the 60,000 people that die every year with the flu.

In fact, I heard this could be a recurring seasonal illness much like the flu. It'll be part of the flu vaccine eventually.

The President responded to the panic of the media. Not the other way around.

And make no mistake, the panic is being intentionally driven by the media and DNC who DESPERATELY need a crisis to drive the stock market down and change the subject from the dreadful Democrat primary.

"Never let a serious crisis go to waste," as Rahm Emanuel used to say.

Cabbage Patch was eclipsed by Beanie Babies. LOL

I think it all comes down to who gets it as well. Those with already compromised immune systems, especially respiratory problems, are prime risk for this flu to kill them because it acts quickly.

I think we might need to define “panic” at this point, because making statements of fact is being treated as “panic” or “fear mongering.” So far, the only thing that can arguably be considered panic is mask hoarding. But making statements like “It will turn into a pandemic” or “it has an average mortality rate of 2.4% is being thought of as panic, and that’s obviously wrong.

So far as I can tell, “panicking” and “fear mongering” has been redefined as “talking about the coronavirus.”

The flu is ubiquitous while the coronavirus isn’t. That’s why more people have died from the flu than the coronavirus. When the coronavirus becomes ubiquitous (and it will), that 18,000 figure, assuming it’s true, will be eclipsed by a figure of 432,000. That’s just basic math: 2.4 is 24 times greater than .1. If you doubt me then pull out a calculator and try it for yourself. If you also get a result of 24, then throw your calculator away because it was clearly manufactured by the Deep State.

If you think that everything I’m saying is wrong, then please share with the rest of the class the mechanism that has been put in place to halt the spread of the virus here in the US. Barring that, share with the rest of the class what makes Americans magically more resistant to coronavirus. “American exceptionalism”?

This virus is related to SARS, which sort of fizzled out over time. If it's in as much as the flu, then well see over 500,000 deaths. The vaccine for it should be ready next year, but that doesn't help the compromised people this year. Of course, this is much more contagious than sars.

Also, as I recall, sars killed a lot quicker.

There were not that many confirmed cases, we already exceeded the confirmed cases of COVID-19 verses sars, and also a higher death count.
