CDC confirms the first US coronavirus case of 'unknown' origin. The California patient was hospitali

Have you considered our vast homeless situation? Do we even have an accurate head count prior to an outbreak?
In urban areas, we're always cognizant of the homeless. (I say this with no animus)

Loving it! BUY BUY BUY!!!!! It's a god damn fire sale! gobble gobble gobble,:chew:.....:2party:

It's like the old saying goes......One man's plague is another man's profit....

It also could (and likely does) reflect the fact that a load of cases of a (any?) fatal disease in a (any?) local area could (and likely did) soon outpace the infrastructure in place to properly treat that number of patients. IMHO, once a vaccine is developed for COVID-19 it will no longer be much worse than the flu is now.
Possibly. But unless we get lucky, a vaccine and adequate penetration is a long, long, way off. Measure adequate immunization of the populace in terms of years, not months.

this comment perfectly sums it up
The biggest question, he writes, is whether Trump can “manage the coronavirus in a way that doesn’t sound like a guy on a bar stool.”
Trump versus the Coronavirus - WSJ

Is that really a question which is in question?

Is there anything which Trump has handled in a way "that doesn’t sound like a guy on a bar stool"?

Possibly. But unless we get lucky, a vaccine and adequate penetration is a long, long, way off. Measure adequate immunization of the populace in terms of years, not months.

That's also assuming that this virus does not rapidly mutate requiring a new vaccine each time.

There were 'proposed' cuts according to the article but it doesnt say if they ever were approved by congress. I doubt that they were.
??

Re-read the article. It was written yesterday, and chronicles the cuts over the last two years. Not just in funds, but in disbanding health response teams. Trump's been dismantling & curtailing our health response infrastructure.

I'm willing to say Trump has handled the acute current event adequately, though I'll reserve my opinion may change if we find out things to the negative. But I will stand by Trump's general weakening of our government infrastructure (in many facets) making us weaker in dealing with acute adversity.

(and I will agree with Pelosi that 2.5 Mil ain't a drop in the bucket)

You know - as if watching my investments decreasing in value isn't bad enough, you've got to add even more reality!

The very structure of our healthcare system enables the spread of the virus. People face high deductibles at the beginning of the calendar year, so they're less likely to seek necessary medical treatment.

The Coronavirus hit at the worst possible time for the United States.

What's worse was pointed out last night to me on Twitter. Most food service workers don't have insurance, and almost none have paid sick leave, so they OFTEN work when sick, because they need the money to pay bills, and cannot afford treatment anyway. Wonder how many people a single pizza delivery driver comes into contact with per day? Line cook - how many meals? Waiter?

Same thing with fast food workers, clerks at convenience stores, department stores.....

You're really making us feel good here, Lovebug.

But I suppose two hours is better than 30 seconds at the store!

Let's face it - if this thing takes-off domestically, it will just have to run its course and our personal impact will essentially be luck-of-the-draw.

Chomsky - Did you plan to live for ever? Last time I checked, no one gets out of here alive. And you can't plan your exit route. Similar anectdote to 'you can't take it with you.'

I'd say buy some surgical masks too, but there's none to be had. I checked and EVERY store is sold out. Same with Amazon.

Yes, even masks that offer no protection against viruses are sold out, apparently.

It’s actually $2.5 Billion.

And the simple fact that he literally had a press conference to address the nation and *simultaneously* it was announced ELSEWHERE by the government that the first case of (possibly) de novo disease was reported.

That’s not handling the current event adequately.

I did read the article and it said there was a requested cut but didnt say that the cuts were ever approved by congress. And the idea that we spent less in certain countries like China only makes me wonder why thats our problem in the first place. The fact is, there is no crisis here. There may be one in the future, but as of today, there is not.

Thats true if your goal is to be hyper critical. That case in CA is disturbing and if this virus can just spring up like that virtually out of nowhere, then the entire world has a big problem for which there is no solution.

Wrong, as usual.

The respirator masks (~$1 vs ten cents) will work well.

They probably work in a few ways.

1) they minimize air droplets of flu from making contact with your mouth and nose. It’s not perfect, but definitely I rely works.

2) they minimize YOUR secretions from getting to others. This is big, but libertarians view it as ‘ineffective’ because it’s not helping selfish individuals.

3) as importantly as the others, they minimize you touching your mouth and nose after getting flu virus on your hands- probably the most common method of transmission. This needs to be coupled with frequent hand washing.

Those are good points that I hadn't considered. Especially #3. I know I'm guilty of doing that unconsciously way too many times a day. Less than perfect =/= useless...

Speaking of personal contact, I wonder if this will affect dating?

Seriously. Restaurants and bars may take a hit as we enter the spring dating season. In my city, come Spring, love is in the air!

Japan is playing baseball in empty stadiums. Opening day for baseball here isn't far behind and I've been looking forward to it, but today was the first day I thought, hmm...crowds.
omg, I hope it's not an issue.

Yeah, watching the last year's earning disappear is stomach churning.

Another case made for universal healthcare. I

If this virus really erupts, the silver-lining may be a cognizance that we as a whole are only as vulnerable as the most vulnerable among us.

Yeah, watching the last year's earning disappear is stomach churning.

Best way to get rid of Trump - a plague & a market collapse.

I work in convention AV.

The hotel I am working in this week is chock full of folks from all over the world.

I'm a little skeeved out.

We already catch things that aren't anywhere else in town so must have come from some attendee.

Right.

And the press conference either ignored the case, or didnt know it was happening.

That seems to me to be a problem. But I get hyper critical when it looks like people’s lives are on the line. That’s just me, I guess.

No. But it would be nice! :2razz:

(I'm highly averse to death)

Thats how the typical cold/flu is spread every year. According to the link, there have been 6600 deaths this year due to the ordinary flu. Corona has taken zero lives. I see no reason to panic. Yet.

CDC Reports 13 Million Flu Cases Thus Far in 2019-20 Season

To be honest, #3 is probably the most effective reason, and #2 is the other.
