CDC confirms the first US coronavirus case of 'unknown' origin. The California patient was hospitali

This is potentially a huge deal. It means the virus is endemic here in the US.

Especially bad that this was reported at almost the EXACT SAME TIME as Trump was giving his press conference....and it wasn’t even mentioned.

We had a gift- a month or two to fully prepare for this virus. Trump squandered it, like he does everything.

Really? And what should have been done in that month?

Live updates: Fears grow of a coronavirus pandemic as markets stumble again; Japan shuts schools

Worry? What? Me worry? I seldom leave my house so my chance of getting infected in reduced thereby. And I wash my hands regularly, especially before showering & after returning from drug store. Greatest risk of contracting coronavirus would be in drug stores where people with health problems congregate for advise & medications. I visit the driveup window & get out of my car to handle the drug transaction. Avoiding the inside of that store is a sensible precaution.

Quick...how much time do I have to get milk and bread supplies?!?!?!

The silver lining is COVID-19 may indeed be seasonally affective. Unfortunately like so much about it, we just don't know. But it could greatly recede with the commencement of summer in the northern hemisphere.

Therefore my reference to a possible "Typhoid Mary" amongst us. It will all come down to how communicative the disease is. There is/was a spreader out there. We need to see how easy or difficult it is the catch.

For those who develop no serious symptoms, I see no way of ever detecting them short of testing everyone (which is obviously not going to happen).

The key word is "potential". That's what makes it daunting. Nothing to do but wait & see. But if this continues to grown globally, there's really no way to keep it out. It will simply have to run its course.

There is a large segment of the left, including the poster to whom you responded, that has a need to make this about Trump. As this case in CA and those in Iran and Italy demonstrate, there is no way to stop this or prevent it from entering our country.

Leave now, brother. Your odds of dying a natural death will improve. Remember, this virus is propagating on a community level, so I would say risk is higher than with common flu.

A good practice for all infection control is wash your hands!!

What the CDC says:

CDC Recommends

While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat:

It’s currently flu and respiratory disease season and CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
If you are a healthcare provider, be on the look-out for people who recently traveled from China and have fever and respiratory symptoms.
If you are a healthcare provider caring for a COVID-19 patient or a public health responder, please take care of yourself and follow recommended infection control procedures.
If you have been in China or have been exposed to someone sick with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you will face some limitations on your movement and activity. Please follow instructions during this time. Your cooperation is integral to the ongoing public health response to try to slow spread of this virus. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient.

For people who are ill with COVID-19, please follow CDC guidance on how to reduce the risk of spreading your illness to others.

Fair point. As for me, I'm hoping it will be found to be seasonally affective, and will diminish come summer.

It will be worth watching cases in the southern hemisphere.

What are your thoughts on (human) smuggling since this 1st patient didn't travel anywhere known to have the virus? How many more are out there, perhaps hiding?

If this thing can start without any known link to its origin, then we got real problems.

You can still buy those retired Thor missile silos located throughout the southwest. I'd install an electrostatic air purifier to zap those nasty virus particles.

But delaying it from spreading is critical, assuming this is a seasonal disease like most flu/coronavirus strains.

And being prepared is critical. This patient was in an ICU for 7 days with an unknown viral disease and WASNT EVEN TESTED! That’s failure of the system.

It should make us reflect on affordable universal healthcare. If not for purely humanitarian reasons, then for self-preservation. You're only going to be as healthy as the guy sitting next to you on the bus & el.

This has been known for decades.

The GOP doesn’t care.

I'm no fan of Trump, especially with his propensity to bull**** & lie. But I must admit I haven't seen any gross mistakes from him over this. He's dreaming if he thinks $2.5M is going to take care of this, I will admit. And his cutting our federal health funds could be seen as contributory. But like I said, I haven't seen any gross errors.

Watching the press conference I was somewhat surprised at his having some idea of what is going-on, but that is mostly because of my expectations being so low. I will call-out his politicizing the press conference as total bull****, though. Blaming the Dems for the market crash? WTF?
