An anti-government movement that advocates for a violent uprising targeting liberal political opponents and law enforcement has moved from the fringes of the internet into the mainstream and surged on social media in recent months, according to a group of researchers that tracks hate groups.

The movement, which says it wants a second Civil War organized around the term "boogaloo," includes groups on mainstream internet platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Reddit, as well as fringe websites including 4chan, according to a report released Tuesday night by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), an independent nonprofit of scientists and engineers that tracks and reports on misinformation and hate speech across social media.

While calls for organized and targeted violence in the form of a new Civil War have previously circulated among some hate groups, the emergence of the term "boogaloo" appeared to be a new and discrete movement. NCRI researchers who analyzed more than 100 million social media posts and comments found that through the use of memes — inside jokes commonly in the form of images — extremists have pushed anti-government and anti-law enforcement messages across social media platforms. They have also organized online communities with tens of thousands of members, some of whom have assembled at real-world events.

The report "represents a breakthrough case study in the capacity to identify cyber swarms and viral insurgencies in nearly real time as they are developing in plain sight," John Farmer, a former New Jersey attorney general who is director of the Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience at Rutgers University, wrote in the report's foreword.

As the likelihood that Trump won't be re-elected increases, the likelihood that these Timothy McVeigh wannabes commit acts of violence and acts of terror also increases. The damage Trump has done to our Republic will take many years to repair.

The liklihood Trump will be re-elected increases month by month, democratic debate by democratic debate, primary by primary. The dems do not have a winning horse in the race. This would have been the year for Bill Richardson and Paul Tsongas types to win. Instead the dems have brought us Mean Girls II

4channers are hilarious. Truly the chosen of Eris, when they play nice.

Uh huh. In your parallel universe.

You are assuming that Trump is a winning horse.

Risky Prediction #478: Trump is so mentally ill, moronic, and inept that he will step on his own tiny dick before November.

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that the basest of his base will stick with him no matter what truth becomes known, no matter how he fecks over them and the nation. But in the end many Trump supporters will jump ship.

Damn silly stuff. Trump will be reelected. Never heard of boogaloo? It's more then likely some made up nonsense from some where on the left. There is NOT going to be a civil war regardless of who wins the 2020 election!
This qualifies as CT stuff.

Who is the group making the charges? It's not coming from homeland security?

The Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) is a neutral and independent third party whose mission it is to track, expose, and combat misinformation, deception, manipulation, and hate across social media channels.

Crazy as "boogaloo" ;) :peace But carry on anyway!

Think there is one more impeachment before Nov?

It's not made-up nonsense, unfortunately. You don't have to go far to find them. There are far right-wing militia groups in every State. Although, I don't think they would characterize potential action on their part as being anything other than defensive in nature.

I don't think there is going to be a "hot" civil war, and if there is any violence it will most likely be the Timothy McVeigh type of violence, mostly unorganized, isolated, sporadic terrorism.

This does raise an interesting question. While planning or conspiring to overthrow the state is a crime, is simply wanting it to happen and speculating on how that might come to pass also a crimminal activity now, or should it be? Be careful what you make or declare to be illegal.

Cheers.

This does lead to another question.
What is your position on the comments that Maxine Waters made concerning harassing anyone that worked in the White House?

"An anti-government movement that advocates for a violent uprising targeting liberal political opponents and law enforcement has moved from the fringes of the internet" to the farthest fringes of social media and conspiracy theories.

What a bunch of lunkheads.

And, if such a thing happen, the US Armed Forces, the NGs, and the LEOs would put down such a right-wing nutso action in a welter of blood shed.

I do! Trump's mental health issues render him incapable of effectively carrying out the duties of his office. His malignant narcissism is progressive and is in no way self-correcting.

It is my hope that a sizeable number of GOP senators will make it known to their Democrat counterparts that they will not stand in the way of Trump being removed from office.

Trump will be re-elected because of his supporters, rather because of the failures of the democratic party to field a charismatic, youthful candidate who connects with voters. This is not an election for Trump to win, it is an election (again) for democrats to lose. Evident is the drop in unique initial debate viewership from the first debate, 9 mil, to 6 mil for the latest debate. Sanders, after a long career in politics has no friends, makes promises people know he cannot deliver through congress, and will suffer as old photo of him with Fidel and Che are brought out for display. Warren creates animosity without trying. Biden is finished, Bloomberg can only gain the nomination with Hilary as VP, and Hilary may want to win a brokered convention as a last hope for the party (ahem).

Since the impeachment, Trumps approval numbers in all polls have rising dramatically. As much as many democrats and progressives hate him, he has the advantage of incumbency. If the democrats nominate a progressive, the moderates stay home on election day. If the nomination goes to a moderate, the progressives will stay home on election day.

Hating Trump will not win the election. He now seems like the victim, and America likes supporting perceived underdogs. What does reality have to do with elections?

If only, but so many are on their knees sucking that tiny mushroom that it is unlikely that he can step on it even accidentally.

We must agree to disagree. I maintain that it will be Trump who seals his own fate. Likely he has done so already, we just don't yet have the national awareness. We will before November. Trump himself will provide it.

If we're gonna start calling 4chan "mainstream" man oh man does the right wing have a lot to answer for.
