Court Blocks Florida Restrictions on Felons’ Voting Rights

The Republican Party's war on voters took a hit today. Their attempts to suppress votes among demographic groups who tend to not vote Republican are many and various. This particular one is targeted against convicted felons who have served their jail time but still owe court fees and such.

What kind of party is afraid of voters...?

You do not have to ask many that question. Now Trump supporters will, these so called staunch supporters of the Constitution and their respect for the 3rd branch is well known.

Problem is what they are well known for.

And it ain't for Joe or Joanne average

That would be wonderful. The last election the Dems lost a Senator by 10,000 votes out of 9 million.

Yep. Keeping former Florida felons from voting was a ploy Bush's brother used to "win" him the White House in 2000.

Let me get straight, you're jumping up and down with glee that felons can now vote. Those who commit these crimes: Felonies are usually crimes that are viewed severely by society and include crimes such as murder, rape, burglary, kidnapping, or arson.

Okay...

I guess that would be your initial attitude when you represent a party like the Republicans who know they are a minority and manipulating elections is the only way they can win.

The Republican Party as we knew it is in its last gasp of life—as the party of the wealthy. They resorted to Trumpism to suppress democracy. After the upcoming shellacking this November, they will be forced to reinvent themselves again—or they will die as a party. The future demographics simply do not support the aging planks of the Grand Old Party. Why do you think Trump doesn’t want any more people of color coming here (i.e. Norwegian immigrants are ok)? Goodbye, Reaganism. Goodbye, extreme rightism.

And the GOP is openly pro-voter suppression. Jim Crow has nothing on them.

leftist once again proves they can't read the law.

the law says they can get their voting rights back when they complete their sentence that would include any fines or money owed.

there is no voter suppression.

not all felons there are some excluded categories of felons.

technically once their debt has been paid they should get their rights back. i have no issue with this.

I think it comes down to if we believe a person is forever to be punished with a denial of basic rights or if we believe that once you served your time, then your rights as and American should be restored.

I can sympathize with your feelings about some felons. we are not exactly talking about the cream of the crop in many cases. But I would suggest that if America ever becomes a non-redemptive society, that hurts all of us in one way or the other eventually.

The democratic party will jumping for joy! They need all the votes they can muster!

Dead people, Vote early and often, Illegal aliens, Now felons, and don't forget busing
elderly folks from the care centers to vote for Mini Mike! :lamo  :lamo

Your username is a lie.

These felons have served their time and paid their debt to society. Can't say the same for all the thugs and crooks Trump is friends with who've had pardons or have had their sentences commuted by the thug-in-chief, Trump.
Trump just pardoned a former dem governor yesterday, I thought you would be happy?

The Democratic Party is openly pro-criminal.

Actually the gop is the party where sending someone to jail and serving their time for their crime isn't enough. Y'all want to punish them even after being released from jail. Just another line of cruelty from your friendly gop.

Also when floridians passed medical marijuana a few years back the gop didn't like that either and so fiddled with the law and decided dispensaries can't sell bud, smoking is bad for your health. Funny how the gop controlled state did nothing about cigarettes. Just weed.

It suppresses the vote of people who can't afford the fine. Rich people don't have a problem voting in this scenario, poor people do.

Poll taxes are unconstitutional.

Okay...

If I was on a jury I would only be considering the evidence & base my decision on innocence or guilt

When an convict is released, multiple barriers, some right, some not, directly contribute to a high recidivism rate in the US

Because they think these criminals will vote Democrat .

If they have fulfilled their FULL sentence they have not repaid their debt to society in FULL. They should not be able to vote if they still owe a debt to society. What would happen if a candidate promised he would cancel all fines imposed by courts. Who do you think they would vote for. Court imposed fines is part of a felon's sentence.

No one should need to pay in order to vote.

Oh horse****! There are certain rights that ought to be irrevocable. Such as the right to free speech and due process. And voting is a right. Not a privilege Taking away the right vote because you have been charged and convicted of a crime gives the government a way to suppress voting by whatever group it deems undesirable.

You really want to wonder why an ex con shouldn't have a gun?

What if their crime had nothing to do with guns? Maybe, he was convicted of tax evasion or money laundering. After Trump is elected out of office and convicted of such crimes, do you not want him to be able to defend himself when he gets out of prison?
