[W:164]What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

The only question to me is if the prices were artifically inflated or not. If they were it requires an explination of why. Beyond that Trump is free to lodge anywhere he wants. The presidency isnt a prison sentence. He can stay in his own hotels and the SS will stay wherever they feel is best to protect him.

How is it that none of you guys are either not able or can't be bothered to read?

And at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, the Secret Service was charged $17,000 a month to use a three-bedroom cottage on the property, an unusually high rent for homes in that area, according to receipts from 2017. Trump’s company billed the government even for days when Trump wasn’t there.

These payments appear to contradict the Trump Organization’s own statements about what it charges members of his government entourage. “If my father travels, they stay at our properties for free — meaning, like, cost for housekeeping,” Trump’s son Eric said in a Yahoo Finance interview last year.

Trump still owns his company. In response to questions from The Post, a company spokesperson said Mar-a-Lago does not charge the Secret Service $650 per room but did not address whether it had charged that rate in the past. The company also noted that the rental cottage at Bedminster contains “multiple rooms and [includes] numerous common spaces.”

The company did not answer questions about the rates it charges the Secret Service now.

“We provide the rooms at cost and could make far more money renting them to members or guests,” Trump Organization Executive Vice President Eric Trump said in a statement. He gave no details about how the company calculates the “at-cost” price.
During the 2016 campaign, Trump told voters that — if he was elected — he would not have time for travel.

I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done,” Trump told the Hill in a June 2015 interview. “I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”

But since taking office, Trump has spent more than 342 days — a third of his entire presidency — at his private clubs and hotels, according to a tally by The Post. Trump has said he works during these trips.
The Secret Service always comes with him, as it does with all presidents. But the Trump Organization has assured the public that it is giving the government a great deal. Last year, Eric Trump told Yahoo Finance that when his father does visit his properties, he is legally required to charge something.

Eric Trump did not say what law required Trump to charge his own government, and the Secret Service did not respond to questions asking what law he was referring to. The Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security, whose internal directives state, “DHS may accept gifts to carry out program functions.”

“If he stays at one of his places, the government actually . . . saves a fortune because, if they were to go to a hotel across the street, they’d be charging them $500 a night, whereas, you know we charge them, like 50 bucks,” Eric Trump said.

That appears to be wrong.

The Secret Service is required to tell Congress twice a year about what it spends to protect Trump at his properties.

But since 2016, it has only filed two of the required six reports, according to congressional offices. The reasons, according to Secret Service officials: key personnel left and nobody picked up the job."

Is Trump free to profit off the government as President? The Secret Service doesn't have a choice. It has to be wherever the President is. So when He stays at one of his resorts that is where many of them will have to be.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

What other President donated his salary back to the country?

JFK never took his salary as a congressman or senator, as well as president. Hoover was the first.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

I saw this early on a different site; this cost was a one-time event; SS agents and other government employee travelling with Trump are usually given below-market rates.

Horse****. Not at Trump properties.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

I agree that is horrible that the Trump company charges the government while protecting the president. I am sure when Obama was on vacation in Hawaii or Cape Cod the secret service was roomed for free somewhere.

That being said,if Trump had allowed the secret service to stay for free on his properties the Washington Post and you would be decrying the special favors he is giving certain government workers. Allowing them to stay at a great resort free. Must be some type of bribe to keep quiet. Or perhaps some type of quid pro quo.

OMG! You write as though the SS agents pay for their own accommodations! WTF is wrong with you?

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Your attempt to Whatabout Obama is yet another failure on the part of a Trumpie acolyte - not unexpected.

You're responding to the wrong poster - I didn't whatabout & I'm not a Trump acolyte.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

No President has ever benefited more financially with taxpayer $ than Trump plus he has put his office up for sale to foreign nations too. The precedent is set and all future Presidents will buy hotel chains before taking office so they may benefit from the office too. Why not?

Luckily, the Clintons didn't rent the Lincoln bedroom out in return for campaign contributions.

Then liberals would be REALLY upset! :2mad:

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

What would be useful might be a comparison with other presidents and whether this violates ethical norms. Presumably there are ethics officers that deal with the president. Trump is already suspect on the emoluments clause.

Liberal outrage has its roots in Trump's past history of crooked dealings and thousands of lies. Think of the boy who cried wolf. When he tells the truth or does something above board people remain suspicious. No one to blame but himself.

See Clinton Lincoln Bedroom Scandal & get back to us.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Neither Trump nor the Secret Service should be sleeping in their cars. Nor should they be sleeping IN HIS FREAKING HOTELS! They should all be in someone else's, preferably not a donor. That's all. Get it now?

His freaking hotels? Where he's staying? The Secret Service has a job, and that's to protect the president.

Should the Secret Service just donate some money to the Clintons & stay in the Lincoln Bedroom in DC while Trump travels elsewhere?

That would resolve this, no?

Let me ask you this - do you think there is nothing in between sleeping in a car and 17K a night cottages that the president owns considering we are 22 trillion dollars in debt?

Liberals = Okay with Biden charging the goobermint rent & the Clintons renting out the Lincoln Bedroom

Liberals = NOT okay with the Secret Service staying where the president is

Makes sense in a Bizarro World kind of way.

[h=1]What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service[/h]https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/politics/trump-secret-service-spending/

President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service for the rooms it uses while protecting Trump at his properties. The charges have been as high as $650 per night for a Mar-a-Lago Clubhotel room, or $17,000 a month for a cottage at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.

Who pays these bills? U.S. taxpayers. That means Trump has a business arrangement with his own government. But the details of that relationship remain largely hidden.

The only glimpses of this spending have come out via Secret Service records, released after public records requests. But these documents are often cryptic, giving few details.

Since Trump took office, he has visited his own properties on 342 days. Secret Service agents come with him. And Trump’s company charges them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Trump supporters proclaim "Trump has refused to accept any salary as President!", they believe that's something grand, it is not. Trump is making more than enough money off the U.S. taxpayer dime, he doesn't need the measly $400,000 a year salary, that's chickenfeed compared to the millions of dollars he's reaping off the taxpayer dime.

So what? Other presidents had security also and the government paid for their rooms as well, wherever those rooms were. Just because there is a hotel where the government employees can stay in various parts of the world does not mean hotel owners around the world should put them up for free. Is there a point to all of this?

God you American rightwingers and Trump nutters are getting desperate in defending the undefendable.

Yes the US President should be protected where ever he goes. This costs money. However there is one hell of a difference between a US president going to Hawaii and the SS paying private citizens for accommodation vs a US president going to his own home/business and not only charging the SS for but overcharging in at least some cases. There is a clear pattern of abuse of the system and Trump is earning far more than the 400k pay he does not want.

Yes Biden did charge money for a cottage that the SS used. He was also the only one to do so, and the amount he earned over 8 years was not even the price of one Trump visit to Bedminster.

Trump has been at his properties for 1/3 of his term. The SS are forced to have at least some of the agents staying there, and while I don't expect Trump Inc to take the whole cost, I do expect a reasonable price since it is Trumps decision to go to said properties so often.

And the fact that the SS is breaking the law in not releasing the books on this issue, clearly shows that they are hiding something and it is bad....

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Now I'm wondering if the reason Trump donates his salary is because people can say how great he is, and while they're not looking, he pulls all this other stuff to bilk taxpayers out of many times more money than the salary. That's what a conman would do.
The likely reason he “donates” his Presidential pay is tax avoidance. Most very wealthy people manage their personal expenditure via capital gains from personal business constructs rather than direct pay. This is because the tax on capital gains is much lower but only if you have little or no reported income. If Trump took the Presidential pay, it would be personal income that he couldn’t possibly avoid declaring and that would significantly impact the tax rate on all of his capital gains for many years.

There is no point in comparing hotel bills other than to try to dishonestly make Trump look bad. Democrat hatred for Trump and America shows no bounds.

Of course. Anyone saying they don't get it is either extraordinarily obtuse or highly disingenuous.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Fake News. There isn't any other evidence that suggests Trump's company charges the Secret Service, in addition to this basically admitting that the Washington Post (an anti-Trump news outlet) is not putting much stock into this. Although, it doesn't matter to the WaPo because they're going to say it's legitimate without presenting any other evidence, which is dishonest, bias, and ultimately fake news. Mr Moderator, mover this thread to the Conspiracy Theories section. Thank you!

No, but I doubt they get to stay at luxury resorts either. Please chill out before responding to me in the future or put me on ignore.

SS agents stay wherever the president stays. The only exception might be the advance team. In any case, they stay where they are told to stay, and they DO NOT pay for their own accommodations as you suggested.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

Hotel owners aren't the president of the United States putting those charges for those rooms in his own pocket.
Honestly, your lack of critical thinking is astonishing.

It isn't going into his own pocket. if you think it is please show me the check or expense where it says it was paid to donald j trump.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

From the Washington Times article
"Since April, 2011 Mr. Biden has collected more than $13,000 from the agency charged with protecting him and his family for use of a rental cottage adjacent to the waterfront home he owns in a Wilmington, Del., suburb." In 3 months, Mr Biden received $13,000. Every month, Trump gets $17,000 from rent paid by the Secret Service at Trump's club in Bedminster NJ.

The True Believers in the Religion of the Orange Person show us every day that they are unable to accept reality.

wow you completely missed it there is no hate there.

it is the hypocrisy that is being displayed.

I will say this one more time. The potus is free to lodge wherever he pleases. He isnt a prisoner. Without a full expense report you nor I have any regerence point to put the spending into context. You and the left are once again jumping the shark and its rather tiresome for the rest of us.

Re: What President Trump’s company charges the Secret Service

This is in our supreme law of the land.

Thank you for that information. Unfortunately I am unable to find exactly where "in our supreme law of the land" it is.

Would you please provide a specific reference (a link would also be appreciated)?

Thank you, in advance, for your generous help.

Why do our senior elders in Congress, ignore this.

Could you provide a link to any evidence supporting the proposition that "The United States of America" or any of the several states are paying actual cash directly to Mr. Trump?

BTW, you do have to admit that it is incredibly generous of Mr. Trump to donate his $400,000 annual presidential salary to charity. Why proportionately that is the same as someone who earns $60,000 per year donating around $55.25 per year to charity.
