Sen. Mitt Romney will vote to convict Trump, breaking with fellow Republicans

Sen. Mitt Romney will vote to convict Trump, breaking with fellow Republicans - POLITICO

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) will vote to convict President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial on the charge of abuse of power, becoming the only Republican to break with the president and his party.

"The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the president committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a “high crime and misdemeanor.”

”Yes, he did," Romney said.

I've been appalled by the silence of people describing themselves as conservatives and libertarians throughout this process. I'm glad there is at least one Republican with the courage to stand up against Trump. Bravo Senator Romney!
Hopefully at this time next year there will be many fewer Trump Republicans in government. Don Jr. is already tweeting that Mitt should be expelled from the party for his treason.

So obviously you voted for Romney in 2012 believing in his credibility and skills for the job? It is amazing how liberals turn positive on people they detested when that person changes his mind supporting a liberal position. Romney is wrong as there was no illegal action or law broken that would support removal from office. A President's personality isn't justification for liberal witch hunts

Dude Trump was a liberal before he promoted birtherism and then you all were like, yeah that's a great thing to support! He's our man! Down with the black guy! Trump got so brainwashed by the Fox News/talk radio propaganda machine, that he just gave Rush Limbaugh a medal.

this is more of a vote to keep his seat. he is in a heavy democrat area. any vote against and
he won't be senator anymore.

His district is the state of Utah, same as Bill Lee's. It isn't Democratic, but they don't particularly care for Trump. They know very well what it is like to be scapegoated and don't appreciate seeing the national leader scapegoating immigrants.

8 years ago I swear nearly every conservative on this forum was proclaiming Romney the only hope to save America from Obama.

And now he's a traitor for thinking Trump broke his oath of office.

The current incarnation of the GOP-Partisan doesn't take well to dissent.

At age 72 and with a net worth of about $200M, I doubt if Romney much cares.

I don't know about that. Romney is VERY much a "style over substance" kind of guy. This vote will now be part of his legacy and a significant part at that. I suspect he really will care about that.

"Dude" Trump is generating the economic results that you and others refuse to recognize and celebrate all because of hatred. How does any country become bipartisan when you cannot celebrate the successful economic policies being generated? Are you so full of partisanship that you cannot celebrate almost 7 million new taxpayers, GDP Growth of about 3 trillion dollars, and want to remove a President simply because you hate him??

I don't know of any liberals, except maybe those who were tied to his business scams, ever look at Trump with anything but scorn and derision.

Sadly, exactly right.

I'm too busy working two crappy jobs (not in my field) and paying off college loans to see much to celebrate about. Get back to me when Trump hands me out money like he does to Black people. You can't debate the topic at hand so you turn to your already-debunked talking points spread by anti-intellectuals like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

Seriously? Is he really Tweeting that? Treason??

Thanks for the keen insight.

In the 70s and 80s he was jealous of liberal billionaires and built his empire based on what he thinks they do, when none of that is true.

Don't commandeer this thread to turn it into one of your usual "Trump's economy and Trump's farts are the greatest things in the world" ****fest. Let the adults talk about the subject at hand, which isn't new taxpayers, GDP growth and the rest of your usual **** that annoys the crap out of pretty much everyone with a working brain.

I suspect that fact has more to do with Romney's decision than anything else. He knew Trump would be acquitted but simply didn't want Trump to get off without that "bipartisan" asterisk.

In the end, Trump won't give a damn about impeachment or an asterisk but it's a good bet that the Utah voters will.

So you agree that Trump has not learned a thing from his extortion of Ukraine and will continue to abuse his office. Whatever he does will all be on the Republican Senators now.

Speaking fees alone would top his Senate salary, toss in a book deal and he wins big (as if he really needs more income or had any further political ambitions). Trump is the ultimate style over substance guy - thus his preference for a partial Great Wall Of Trump over an eVerify mandate and/or besting Obama's deportation record(s).

Because liberals rely on generating power by keeping people dependent. You don't see conservatives whining and complaining about what others make or pay in taxes. It seems most conservatives like the private sector but that isn't the case with liberals. Liberal results speak for themselves, high debt, high dependents and massive nanny state. Europe is the model and that should scare everyone. Europeans rely on gov't spending as the largest percentage of their GDP, ours is consumer spending

Utah? You realize he is a senator from Utah don't you?
You should probably just stop talking politics at this point comrade.

Right all of which are Trump's fault and not the poor choices you made. So sorry the Private sector economy has been so bad to you as I know that all those choices you made were destroyed by someone evil like Trump. Do you ever accept personal responsibility for anything?

Eh thought he was still in MA.
simple misinformation.

i don't pay that much attention to him.
Actually unlike you yes most of the things i do right is correct.
unlike you i actually support what i say with articles.

congrats your ad hominem is a failure as always.

I don't believe that Trump extorted anyone. Through this entire process he has done nothing more than allow the political establishment to expose themselves for the charlatans that we thought them to be.
