Longtime influential conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh announced on his show Monday he was diagnosed with "advanced lung cancer," a shocking announcement in which he said he will miss shows for treatment.

“This day has been one of the most difficult days in recent memory, for me, because I’ve known this moment was coming,” Limbaugh said. “I’m sure that you all know by now that I really don’t like talking about myself and I don’t like making things about me… one thing that I know, that has happened over the 31-plus years of this program is that there has been an incredible bond that had developed between all of you and me.”

Limbaugh then told his audience that his job has provided him with the “greatness satisfaction and happiness” of his life.
“So, I have to tell you something today that I wish I didn’t have to tell you. It’s a struggle for me, because I had to inform my staff earlier today,” he said. “I can’t help but feel that I’m letting everybody down with. The upshot is that I have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.”

Sad news coming from FL. today, and while I've never listened to his show, I know many listen religiously.
I wish him all the luck in the world. Not an easy gig for anyone; lung cancer. Not sure if he was a smoker.
Rush is 69 years old.
 
Rush would say, many years ago, "my nicotine stained fingers"; however, for years he has said "my formerly nicotine stained fingers".

He's a talent the likes of Howard Stern. A shock jock of a generation. I hope he beats it and has some time to retire and enjoy the fruits of his incredible success.
 
For all the vile garbage this man has said, it is fitting he would get this disease. Spit out trash, inhale trash. I pity his family. For him?

No forgiveness here remains.
 
He smoked cigars and promoted an unhealthy diet to millions, while making millions. He could have hired a dietitian, or someone to tell him to quit smoking years ago, or someone to tell him cigars are bad.

Millions of Americans never have the sort of luxuries he did. Here is to hoping all that wealth he amassed while selling snake oil will allow him to live a long life.

Pretty sure he was a smoker for much of his life. Though I think he quit. It is very rare for anyone to get lung cancer that wasn't a smoker.

I don't like the guy, but cancer is a horrible disease, and I would not wish it on anyone.

He's an entertainer. A shock jock having a good time on the radio. Not so different than what any hack-inclined member does here, except he was a tremendous success doing it.

It's not his fault if GEDs take his show as an education in political science and philosophy.

Meh. Color me unimpressed. I will respect an enemy that treats me with dignity. Rush? He's called people like me baby killers and extremist communists. I do not forgive those smears, and I have no reason to do so.

Cigars are not a serious lung cancer risk.

People also do get lung cancer who never smoked, Andy Hill the Republican state senator from here in Washington died several years ago from a shock lung cancer diagnosis.

Of course I don’t know what volume of cigars Rush smoked, if you have even one a day or a couple a week it’s not a serious risk. If you’re like Ulysses S Grant and puffing a box a day then all bets are off.

He's not a politician. He's an entertainer. Entertainers are not our enemy. Politicians aren't really our enemy, but entertainers definitely are not. He's basically a book, a graphic novel perhaps, that you're blaming for other people's behavior.

I hope he beats it.



Rush was out of work at one time. He had a mortgage payment to make and he didn't know how he was going to raise the money.

World Wide Wrestling was big at the time so Rush watched a lot of WWW. He wondered how he could combine WWW with talk radio. The Rush Limbaugh show was born.
 
Cigars are not inhaled and thus carry almost none of the risk cigarettes carry. Rush smoked cigarettes years ago.

You're goofing off. Try putting 1 to 20 grams of tobacco in your lungs for 20+ years and take your gamble if you're so sure.

That's rather sad, and I hope that he is able to fight it. Rush was one of the first political entertainers I listened to back in High School and I hope that he can overcome this disease.

Cigars are not to be inhaled and should be enjoyed with ventilation. Preferably a hot tub carrying the smoke instantly away from oneself.

I don't know about that. When my dad was pretty ill, he gave up cigarettes but continued to smoke cigars. His doctors warned him not to inhale them.
My dad didn't have anything wrong with his lungs either.
Yeah, I think people who smoke cigars can still be heavy smokers. So much tar.

I really dislike the man intensely, his anger radio has really coarsened society, but I'm sorry to hear of anyone with lung cancer.

I have a friend who isn't a smoker who has it, and is doing pretty well in her battle, but its a bitch of a cancer.

Cigars are not made to be inhaled, people. If you're inhaling cigars, you're doing it wrong. Wtf.
 
My opinion of Rush Limbaugh or his usual message of hate is largely irrelevant, I wish him well in what is going to be excruciating for him and those that care for him.

Well I for one don't think we should be grave dancing here. He's old, he has bad health habits, and we all have to die of something. It's not divine retribution for the havoc he has wreaked on the national discourse - it's just what happens when you smoke a lot. He might have retired before much longer anyway then all we would do is sigh, "good riddance". Perspective, folks.
