Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been working on a proposal that would push the final impeachment vote to Wednesday, according to GOP aides familiar with the plan.

Why it matters: The plan isn't final, but it raises the prospect that the Senate's final verdict might not come until after the Iowa caucuses on Monday and President Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday — unless he delays it.

What we're hearing: The current proposal is that following today's witness vote, which is expected to fail, McConnell would either amend the organizing resolution, introduce a new resolution, or offer a motion to move to closing arguments. In any case, Democrats could drag this process out into the early hours tomorrow morning by offering amendments to the process.

Once the amendment process concludes, the Senate would adjourn until Monday — skipping a Saturday session.

On Monday, the House managers and Trump's legal team would deliver closing arguments. It's still unclear how long both sides would be given, but it's expected to take up to one day.

On Tuesday, senators would give their floor speeches on how they came to their decision on whether or not to acquit Trump.

On Wednesday, around lunch time, the Senate would deliver a final verdict — which is expected to acquit Trump on the articles on impeachment.

Hello, what's this? I found this on Axios, and it was also referenced by a CNN corespondent live at the Capital Building.

Could this be true? And why would McConnel deprive Trump of a victory announcement at Tuesday's SOTU? The CNN correspondent was alluding to Chuck Schumer's ability to tie the procedure up with amendments, and the GOP Senators want 10 minute slots to add their vote casting rationale to the record. So they were trying to work something out.

Still, I find it hard to believe McConnel would go against Trump by moving the time-frame. I suspect if he does, it means Schiff/Schumer have some power we are not aware of, or his Senators are getting nervous and indeed want to rationalize their votes.

So, we shall see.

Don't forget, we don't know what moves Bolton is making, plus there is the superbowl this weekend. You'd think they want it over by then...

I thought the plot lines in “House of Cards” were far-fetched!

Yeah, that's why I'm skeptical. It would seem McConnel has every reason to end it now, and none I'm aware of as to not. It makes no sense. Can you imagine Trump's ire?

I'm not sure I'm following how they arrive at "push," as in, he's "pushing" the date back. Was there already a scheduled date that the final vote was supposed to have taken place? I don't see any date having been set. If there wasn't, the schedule seems pretty much in line with how it would have to be done. Doesn't seem like a "push" to me.

McConnell broke our country, and now he knows it

McConnell clearly fears he has overplayed his hand, or he wouldn't be doing this. He knows the optics of "the first impeachment trial without witnesses" is terrible for headlines, and is definitely going to anger independents that wanted a serious trial that was about evidence.

If the Democrats are smart they'll force a censure vote. This is the one setting where they don't need to overcome a filibuster.

It was assumed MCConnel would get it finished-up ASAP so as not to give any more chance of additional revelations or political sways, along with giving Trump a SOTU PR opportunity.

Which is why some of us are perplexed to hear of this possibility.

Word was that McConnell wanted an acquittal tonight, so this is a change.

Censue who? In what Chamber?

If the trial is being extended it's not by McConnell's choice. He simply doesn't have enough votes to bring a motion to vote on the articles. Remember, the same rules applies to his motions in that 50-50 fails.

They can try to force a vote of censure of Trump in the Senate.

This was attempted in Clinton's trial, but Republicans blocked it.

That sounds like it may be an erroneous assumption, then.

Where is this "word"?

McConnell wants the Democrat senators running for president to be stuck in DC watching Schiff make a fool of himself during the Iowa caucuses on Monday. Pure genius The Turtle is smarter than he looks.

From what I understood, Schumer had asked McConnell to wait until Wednesday so the 4 senators could get to Iowa tonight. McConnell had said no. I also wonder if Schumer isnt going to try to get Bolton to do an interview or something? No reason he couldnt go all over like Lev Parnas did.

Manu Raju reported this on his Twitter feed last night, and he's been very accurate so far.

That's a bit hard to believe. Even if some Senator is balking, to let it fester further will only allow it to get worse. We saw today's Bolton accusation that Cippolone is a direct witness to Trump's Ukraine orders. It will not get better. They have to kill it.

BTW - Schiff really does an amazing job acting and reacting in the moment. I never knew he was that good.

Edit: Hm, they just broke for a quorum call.

Except that nobody really cares all that much. As far as issues go that independents care about, this probably doesn't even register.

Anyway, CNN is reporting the conflict lies with some GOP Senators wanting to speak while others want to put it quickly to bed.

Edit: The in Chamber CNN reporter claims Schumer & McConnel are speaking privately on the floor. Apparently some GOP Senators (Collins, Murkowski, etc.) want to public speak.

The longer this goes on, the more opportunity for revelations.

Seems maybe Mitch doesn’t have that firm a grip?

For Schumer to have any credence & gravatas to make that request (break for Iowa), he must have some pretty heavy weight behind him.

I would love to see person-in-the-street interviews in various towns in flyover country--Lincoln, Nebraska, Janesville, Wisconsin, and, oh, pick any average town. My guess is that independents and other ordinary folks are as eager as I am to have this over.

Several of the candidates have already said that while campaigning. Most know whether they will vote for Trump or not so they want to get on with the campaigns. If the Ds dont pick a good candidate then the indies could be lost to third party votes again. Most indies are pretty moderate.
