Washington (CNN)Police in Ukraine are investigating the possible surveillance of former US Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, the country's Interior Ministry announced Thursday.

"Ukraine's position is not to interfere in the domestic affairs of the United States of America. However, the published records contain the fact of possible violation of the legislation of Ukraine and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which protects the rights of a diplomat in the territory of another country," a ministry statement said.

"Ukraine cannot ignore such illegal activities on its territory. After analyzing these materials, the National Police of Ukraine upon their publication started criminal proceedings," the statement said.

Can Trump's attempts to have an investigation into his political opponent announced by the Ukrainians, have backfired any worse? In response to Trump's effort to get Ukraine to announce an investigation into his political opponent, today Ukraine announced an investigation into Trump's attorney who delivered the request!

What an amazing turn.

They key words in the Ukraine statement (the final sentence in my quote), seems to be "illegal activities". Illegal, in terms of the Vienna Convention of which the U.S. is a signatory.

It looks possible that if the U.S. Congress fails to find Trump having acted illegally, Ukraine might. Which wouldn't be saying much for us as a nation.

Regardless, the President looks like he has finally succeeded in getting a Ukraine investigation!

oh, the irony

I swear, I can't disagree. Let's hope Trump doesn't get re-elected, and perhaps this can be seen as an experiment gone wrong - as they sometimes do. But if he gets re-elected, our standing on the world stage will be garbage. That's something I can't accept.

While there's an enormous of schadenfreude in this story, there's also an enormous of shame for our own country. A foreign country is investigating illegal surveillance of one of our ambassadors whereas our State Department is completely silent about the illegal surveillance of one of its own. This means that a country which is the poster child for corruption is behaving more ethically and lawfully than the United States. Utterly shameful.

 I can't stop laughing. LOL

This is a triple whammy day for Trump. Ukraine opens criminal probe, the GAO report came out....and the impeachment trial opened today.

Agreed. I don't believe this will be lost on much of the electorate.

Back when the Ukraine president said that there was no "quid pro quo" you liberals laughed and said.................yeah right!

Now that the same Ukraine president offers up a investigation that might favor your argument............he's your guy!

Your party all are such hypocrites.

I wish I gave the electorate as much credit as you.......

Well, Trump did finally get an an investigation from Ukraine. Aren't you happy?

What was it? Last week? Trump was talking about protecting our embassies? Didn't he order a kill because our embassies were under attack?

 I can't stop laughing. LOL
I'm laughing, but I'm crying - Moot. I have a fair amount of international friends and relatives. Most of them cannot understand what's happening here, and I surely can't explain - much less defend.

The sad part about this is, the international community believes "we" want this. Explaining the vagaries of the Electoral College doesn't always work. They believe "we" did this. "We" want this. "We" elected the guy.

That’s a thin argument, what’s Zelensky gonna say? Where are Barr and Pompeo? US Senator from Kansas probably is looking pretty good today......

Forget Obama's apology tour. The citizens of the United States will need to go on an apology tour after this psycho leaves office, if he ever does.

Meh, the Trumpeteer Cultists are full of excuses, they'll be able to deflect this away.

There are many republican senators who have told us they do not care to hear the evidence; that this trial is a “sham” and how they will vote on impeachment, all took an oath in the Senate chambers today to do “impartial justice”? If these republicans don't do their jobs it's going to be clear to all Americans, and particularly to their own constituents, will be watching this trial very carefully. And, guess what? These people are the real jurors. Sitting at home in their living rooms watching this trial, it's these people whose minds will be influenced by their actions.

If this is a sham of a trial as Mitch McConnell plans, people will take to the streets in protest. People can only trust that their elected officials will protect this democracy and if they fail to do that, they will hear from these people, loud and clear.

That doesn't make sense USN. Indeed, that an investigation has been opened kinda proves Zelensky was lying when he said that.

BS.....LOL

Liberals laughed at the guy earlier. Now they are hoping he finds something.

Uh, it's gonna take a bit more than an apology for this one. It's going to take a demonstration to other nations that the rot that led to Trump in the first place has been scrubbed clean. Assuming Democrats retake the Federal government back from Republicans, that's going to take a long time.

I can't speak to what others are saying, but I can say I believe Trump's actions here - along with others - deserve his removal.

And if the GOP weren't a bunch of Partisan Party Protectors, there may have even been consequences to these bad actions. As it stands, there will be none.

Did the FBI apply to the FSIA court for that surveillance as well?

There is going to be more accusations against Trump in the next 10 months than flies attracted to s***.
