I didn’t ask you. I don’t think this will be a cut and dried as there are a few republicans who want witnesses. Remember when McConnell said he was backed 100% by the republicans in the senate? Any way I look forward to it regardless of the outcome.
Seriously!
McConnell moved to start a trial without the articles being transmitted.
There is no provision or precident law regarding handling of the Impeachment Articles, or whether the Senate could proceed without them.
So, it was always a risky play.
It rocked McConnell back on his heels, too. Especially after he got over his skis by declaring his open bias.
Contrary to our right wing friend’s assertion, Pelosi held her votes.
She “caved in”, because she didn’t have much of a leg to stand on. One supposes that they could have kicked the matter to the courts, but running the clock out in court has always been Trump’s principal strategy.
Some pundits opine that the interim over Christmas allowed the idea to sink in. Trump is clearly guilty, and is essentially daring the nation to do something about it.
Whether that has sunk in really remains to be seen.
But McConnell could not hold his votes.
He clearly does not have the votes for the outright dismissal that Trump is demanding, and he does not have the votes to prevent witnesses and documents either.
He has already said so.
The Republican leadership in the Senate is stuck with defending thier leader, who is obviously and belligerently guilty. They have to defend a man they do not trust, like, or have any real faith in.
As the evidence continues to pile up by the day.
Really, the only question that remained by last week was whether the Senate was going to do its job, or leave it up to the voters.
Hanging over that is the ongoing concern over whether how this incompetent Administration would handle a real foreign policy crisis.
Right on cue, we got one.
The evidence continues to cascade out.
The Republicans are on Trump TV whining about “trashing the process”.
They’re stuck. The evidence can be presented in the Senate. Even if it isn’t, the jurors (Senators) will read about it in the Post or the Times.
So, the evidence and the witnesses will be on the table.
