"The Republican-controlled Senate quietly cut the phrase "white nationalist" from a measure in the National Defense Authorization Act, which was intended to explicitly address the threat of white nationalists in the military, altering the language of a House-passed amendment before passing the massive military spending bill Tuesday.

The House amendment, which was passed in July, was drafted to explicitly study the feasibility of screening for white nationalist beliefs in military enlistees.

But the final version of the bill passed by the Senate and sent to President Donald Trump for his signature now only requires the Department of Defense to monitor for "extremist and gang-related activity," rather than specifically referencing white nationalism."

White nationalism is a problem and the refusal of the Republicans in the Senate to acknowledge it is another sign where the Republican Party is headed.

The Republican party is run by white nationalists, so it follows that they want them in as many consequential positions and roles as possible. I just can't believe that in this county in this year one of the two major political parties has decided that it's best bet is to revive full blown racism as a strategy to win.

White Nationalism is a dog whistle for bigots incapable of having rational discussions on issues and agendas.

"Extremists and gang activity" is a rational and intelligent standard that avoids the bull**** of liberal identity politics and the bigotry it promotes.

The reason you have to specifically target white nationalists is that the white nationalists already in the military are going to wield the new phrasing against people of color.

Was Muslim extremism also mentioned in the House measure? It seems there was a serious incident at Fort Hood a few years back.

If Muslim extremism is already mentioned as a "belief" to watch out for with enlistees, then the Senate is being unfair by not adding white nationalism.

However, if white nationalism is the only specific belief to watch for, then the Senate is correct in re-wording it to cover other extremist views.

They also continue to demonstrate that they don't understand enumerated groups of people. "All people are protected by the Constitution." Not equally. That's why we have civil rights legislation and why it includes specifically listed classes of people. "All hate groups are targeted by the Constitution." Not equally. That's why we have hate crime legislation that includes specifically listed motivations for hate. "Extremist" covers white nationalism, but specifically listing it removes ambiguity and discretion. There's a reason to single it out other than political correctness.
