Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to hold a final vote to acquit President Donald Trump should he be impeached, when a majority of senators believe his trial has run its course instead of holding a vote on dismissing the articles of impeachment, two Republican senators told CNN on Wednesday.

That's significant, because Republicans want to have a vote on acquittal -- to clear the President of the charges against him -- not simply rely on a 51-vote threshold procedural motion to dismiss the hotly disputed case.

The plot thickens.

It would be political suicide for McDonnell to dismiss the case, so of course he's going for acquittal.

Interesting.

The conspiracy theory part of me wonders if that's why the Democrats only brought 2 charges, when others were available.

Either so they were more sure about the two they brought, making acquittal less likely...
Or so it would take less time for the Senate to examine the charges, making a decision before the election more likely.

Or, hell, to make it easier for the republicans to investigate and acquit Trump.

The constitution states impeachment would remedy “ Treason, or other high crimes and misdemeanors “. Bribery is a crime.Treason is a crime. Obstruction of justice is a crime. Obstruction of Congress is not a crime. With out connection to a crime, it doesn’t rise to the level of impeachment. BTW, appealing subpoena from one branch to another to the court, is not obstruction of justice. The 3 branches are co-equal. Disputes between branches may be referred to the court. If the court denies the appeal, then they must cooperate with the subpoena.

Yep, but they've already been to court, won their case, won their appeal, and the GOP then went to SCOTUS, where it will languish for weeks and/or months. The GOP made it clear that every single issue would be appealed all the way to SCOTUS, which was just a time-sink to drag the entire process through 2020 and into the actual election process. That, of course, leaves Trump free to continue Obstructing Congress and Abusing his Power for another ten months.

Again, using the courts is not obstruction. That's proper procedure.

No, it is the NORMAL process of travel for an appeal; from the lowest Court to the highest Court in an ongoing dispute.

It is not done to "drag out the process," it is done to get a final definitive ruling.

In order to acquit Trump McConnell will have to have a hearing in the Senate. That means when this charade hits the Senate there will have to be a hearing not just some vote like occurred in Clinton's impeachment. That explains why McConnell has cleared the entire month of January 2020 for the Senate to not address anything else. Evidently McConnell must have enough information to proceed with a trial that will benefit the Republicans.

A crime isn't required for impeachment.

Newsflash- clearing the Senate calendar for a month is not a sacrifice.

They haven’t done much of anything for months since McConnell won’t even consider any of the bills the House has sent up- over 400 so far.

News flash... yes they have been busy! Yup they have been very busy! And don't forget the Supreme court! :peace

Almost 30 Percent Of All U.S. Circuit Judges Are Now Trump Appointees
Sen. Mitch McConnell's new motto, “Leave no vacancy behind," has stacked the federal judiciary with young Trump-appointed judges.

It's a matter of not wanting to complicate things. Yes, there are VERY many issues that are impeachable, but the more items on the plate, the less people will understand and be focused on. Make it overly complicated, and people will just ignore it, because it's too much to process.

Why wouldn't Trump allow any of his people to testify? Because he's guilty as sin, that's why. Ignoring Congressional subpoenas is like saying that his office is a higher office than Congress. In other words - a kingdom. But that's the dysfunctionality of the Trump organization - he couldn't work with a Republican Congress either, and they got no respect.

I don't accept that.

And it's disturbing that they might have held off some charges because they think the american people are incapable of keeping track of so many things.

Both political parties, it appears, are interested in ending this phase [the impeachment brouhaha] of their existential warfare. The battle will shift to another arena.

Meanwhile, public confidence in our American institutions apparently continues to erode. Perhaps this is the way some democracies end -- not with a bang, but a whimper.

I have lived through what, arguably, was America's finest hour. At the end of WWII, we stood astride the world militarily. We could have demanded and enforced a Pax Americana. We chose not to, and instead helped other countries, including our vanquished enemies, recover from the war.

In a Senate impeachment trial, individual senators act as jurors, rendering judgement once all the evidence is presented.

For a senator like McConnell to announce, in advance, that he will vote for acquittal would be like a potential juror in a criminal trial to announce during voir dire, before the trial has begun, that he thinks the defendant is innocent. In which case, of course, that potential juror would be instantly eliminated.

Any senator who has made it public how he/she would vote, either for or against conviction and removal, should immediately "recuse" him or herself.

(Of course, that would probably mean the majority of Republican senators wouldn't get to be jurors).

Thats false. They are equal branches. You seem to think that it is congress that is superior. Its not. In a dispute between the two it is the courts that decide.

He picked up on Harry Reid's playbook you mean.

First, thats not how it works; second, we have seen all the evidence, and third, numerous dems, including the presidential candidates, have spoken out as well. Dems are pushing a partisan impeachment and will get partisan results.

We haven’t seen all the evidence. Trump has obstructed the inquiry. And partisans such as yourself hate Democrats more than they love the Republic and have apparently decided that Trump putting himself above the law is perfectly fine. It’s a partisan inquiry because of a Republican sanctioned obstruction.

you mean like how most of the congressmen with a (D) in their names was calling Trump guilty before one shred of evidence was presented

you mean like THAT....

The only 2 supportable charges are these:

1. The Democrat-Socialists hate Trump.
2. The Democrat-Socialists know they will lose to Trump.

Everything else is the lunatic ravings of possessed partisans in a Lynch Mob.

this post is a lie.

is anyone surprised that lies continue to pour out of the mouths of Trump's biggest supporters?
