(CNN)President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Wednesday to interpret Judaism as a nationality and not just a religion, a move that the Trump administration believes will fight what they perceive as anti-Semitism on college campuses, a White House official said.

Uh, what? Judaism is a nationality? So, those Jews residing here are not American citizens? Or are they all dual citizens, now?

I find this confusing and likely problematic ...

Trump sure likes to otherize Jews.

It's insulting to Americans, who happen to be Jewish. Their nationality isn't "Jewish." It's American. Whatever the motive, the result is that American Jews will be viewed as outsiders. The history of similar actions are disturbing.

Why is it problematic? Seems reasonable. Not all people of Jewish origin or ancestry are religious, and I don't think an anti-Semite really cares which Jews observe the Sabbath and which ones don't.

For one thing, all Jews are not of Jewish origin or ancestry. Religion is a choice. Nationality is not. Think Sammy Davis Jr.

Isn't nationality also included under law along with religion as protected?

Confusing and problematic how. This is rather clean cut in premise.
Though to be honest, I'm not sure that CNN is the best source to use on such a topic. Seeing as all they're going to try and do is cast this as some sort of racist agenda, or whatever lame tactic they can think of this time around.

Otherizing Jews is what’s been done to them time immemorial, and it works against normalization in the country of their residence. It’s not helpful. I don’t know who’s happy about trump doing this, but I can guarantee you it’s not Jews.

The base is going to eat this up with a plastic spoon. Pompeo is in talks with Netanyahu to recognize the Jordan Valley as belonging to Israel. So much winning.

Let's stop pretending that Trump is catering to 2 percent of the country without being prompted to. All of his top 10 donors are Jewish, Sheldon Adelson being the biggest single donor to the entire GOP ($123 million given to GOP last year alone).

Otherrizing.. Can people just not use words that are created solely for an idiotic premise. Because this doesn't actually meet the qualification for such a frankly stupid claim.

The consensus is that Trump's executive order is designed to help outlaw BDS movements. 28 states have already signed laws regarding it, over half of the country. Besides passively saying "oh stop it Trump" online and in articles, American Jews aren't doing anything to discourage what he's up to. Contrast that passivity to the numerous American Jewish organizations currently trying to shut down ICE and DHS.

Banning BDS on college campuses, or on government property, or requiring government employees to promise not to support BDS, completely goes against the first ammendment. Anti-BDS proponents are trying to criminalize the criticism of a foreign government on American soil. That is their goal.

Probably something similar to what the French are doing. So that that any criticism of Israel and anti-Zionism can officially be called anti-Semitic.
French parliament adopts anti-Semitism definition that includes anti-Zionism - Europe - Haaretz.com

For all those who argue that it's okay to discriminate against Muslims, because it's a religion not an ethnicity (despite most Muslims being people of color), umm...what now?

I can’t wait to see what sort of a visual aid will be issued so that they can be identified.

This idea = Insane

Targeting Jews in this way, even if supposedly for good reason, makes me very, very nervous.

I thought that too.

Another take is that if Trump can decide who's a protected class by executive order, it shoots a big hole in the Trumpian claim that Obama couldn't protect LGBTQ people because Obama didn't have legal authorization to protect them. In other words, more hypocrisy -- presidents that use E.O.s are dictators unless he's their guy.

For one thing, all Jews are not of Jewish origin or ancestry. Religion is a choice. Nationality is not. Think Sammy Davis Jr.

True, but then there are many non-religious Jews, such as certain Ashkenazi Jews whose ancestry can be traced to Europe and didn't choose to be born a "Jew" or "Jewish." Many of them share certain inherited, cultural, and linguistic traits (such as the ability to speak Hebrew) that would qualify any other similarly situated group as a "nation." And when they're made targets by virtue of the anti-Israel BDS movement it's a bit disingenuous to claim the bigotry is based solely on the fact that many of them practice Judaism.

Well, if someone can support an argument that there's such a thing as a Gay Nation it just might fly.

This makes me think of a haunting scene from “The Stranger,” a film in which Orson Welles portrays a Nazi on the run, hiding in America as a college professor. Over a dinner discussion, Welles character attempts to correct a statement made by his guest that positions Karl Marx as one of history’s most significant Germans, saying something along the lines of “But Marx wasn’t a German, he was a Jew.” Judaism isn't a nation either.

You would need to read literature about the subject. Jewish scholars have written about a 'Jewish nation' for hundreds of years. It was meant to signify that Jews living around the world on different continents were part of a collective nation unto themselves, regardless of the physical nation they lived in.
