I disagree with using his name. But the child was not trash talked. It was his father.

Delaying advanced education can be a logical course of action for many people. Not going to college at all isn't a logical course of action for the vast majority of people, and even Bill Gates thought this of himself.

Also, while Steve Jobs did not graduate, and dropped out after only one semester, thereafter the college allowed him to take courses that interested him in a piecemeal fashion.

The point being, both Gates and Jobs seemed very interested in improving themselves and increasing their scope of knowledge through formal education.

Formal education is important. Is formal education everything? No, but for the population as a whole, the statistics have shown that education is correlated with higher incomes and longer lifespans.

The most successful, self fulfilled person I know is a plumber by trade, never got past 5th grade.

There are no shortcuts. There is no doubt the world needs plumbers, that it's a difficult job, and it takes some time to learn and acquire the experience to become an expert plumber.

With respect to education, if you look at the data, and study populations as a whole, and not just anecdotes, the correlation between a person's education level and lifetime earnings is pretty clear. This is also true with respect to less tangible things like happiness:
