Full headline: "Barr’s handpicked prosecutor tells inspector general he can’t back right-wing theory that Russia case was U.S. intelligence setup"

Aaaand another right wing conspiracy theory bites the dust.

So which investigation will Republicans be hanging their hats on next?

The prosecutor handpicked by Attorney General William P. Barr to scrutinize how U.S. agencies investigated President Trump’s 2016 campaign said he could not offer evidence to the Justice Department’s inspector general to support the suspicions of some conservatives that the case was a setup by American intelligence, people familiar with the matter said.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s office contacted U.S. Attorney John Durham, the prosecutor Barr personally tapped to lead a separate review of the 2016 probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia, the people said. The inspector general also contacted several U.S. intelligence agencies.

Among Horowitz’s questions: whether a Maltese professor who interacted with a Trump campaign adviser was actually a U.S. intelligence asset deployed to ensnare the campaign, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the inspector general’s findings have not been made public.

But the intelligence agencies said the professor was not among their assets, the people said. And Durham informed Horowitz’s office that his investigation had not produced any evidence that might contradict the inspector general’s findings on that point.

yawn...

More "people familiar with the matter". In other words...fake news.

Let me know when y'all have an actual quote of something Durham says. Until then...

Thread dismissed. (see my sig)

Or perhaps most conservative Republicans are far more intellectually honest and diligent in their duties than their political opposition gives them credit for.

If you presume that Republicans are as idiotic as Donald Trump, you will find yourself constantly surprised.

We sure hope so. The Senate has to get serious and the Chief Justice will preside.

I think that it's less about idiocy than it is community. Part of the definition of being a trump supporter is the choice to stand by Trump no matter what. It's more than that, of course, but that's been a big part of it for a very long time.

Per the "community" argument, it's worth it to see Behind The Curve on Netflix. It's probably a good hour longer than it had any business being, but it makes the case that people will adopt the most insane conspiracy theories or continue to stay in the nuttiest cults due to nothing simpler than the human need to belong to a community.

Now maybe these members here that have been threatening the big bad news that John Durham was going to prove that the FBI was totally corrupt and they are 'never-Trump' people has been proven nothing more than Bill Barr's attempt to dig up any dirt on the FBI in order to harm the reputation of the FBI and damage their credibility with Trump's base can just shut up already. BOO ****ING HOO!

I'm happy to find out that John Durham's reputation will remain intact. At least he got some nice trips to Italy, Spain, Australia and who knows where else on our taxpayer dime.

Bill Barr’s own top investigator privately says right-wing conspiracy about the Russia probe is baseless: report

Bill Barr’s own top investigator privately says right-wing conspiracy about the Russia probe is baseless: report – Alternet.org

John Durham, the U.S. attorney picked by Attorney General Bill Barr, has privately said that he has no evidence to support the right-wing conspiracy theory that the Russia investigation was an intelligence community plot to take down President Donald Trump, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

Barr, who chose Durham to oversee a review of the origins of the investigation that has become a criminal probe, has fanned the flames of the conspiracy theories about Russia probe. His public comments have suggested he gives credence to claims made by Trump and many right-wing media figures that the whole investigation was an illegitimate effort to undermine the president. This theory has always been wildly far-fetched, but it’s been treated as received wisdom in some corners by Trump defenders.

Not all Republicans support Trump...I strongly suspect about half loath him.

I haven't looked it up recently, but last I checked his approval among Republicans is about 90%. Also, per the midterms in 2018 and the elections in Kentucky and Virginia, Republican voters are basically 100% motivated. If Republicans loathed him like you say, he would depress turnout. That is not happening.

Or perhaps Bill Barr hired an attorney with some integrity and a reputation to protect, one that wouldn't just make up **** to please Barr and Trump.

I like to assume the best. I have met countless incredibly intelligent conservatives and righties in my life. To this day, I count many of them as my friends.

But as a whole, the last three years serve to greatly discredit your thesis, your use of "most" being the problematic part.

I strongly suspect those polls are scewed to did you vote for Trump and then do you support him....not all Republicans voted for Trump...a good portion did not.

I'm guessing they will start another Benghazi investigation. It's an oldie but a goody for the republican party and their con media masters.

It's got Hillary, the can sneak in some lies about Obama, and it deflects the spotlight off of the criminals in the GOP.and the fact the GOP hasn't been able to govern in decades. It's the top 3-4 hits on the republican hit parade. Hanniity and Tucker will be orgasmic.

You know which golden oldies they've let back out for a stroll? Whitewater and Vince Foster. Barr has got to promise them a new investigation to look forward to or they're gonna lost their minds.

The IG report when made public will be a big nothingburger

I presumed the opposite. Since Trump was elected, Republicans have surprised me a record number of times. I'm all surprised out now. I no longer expect any honesty or dignity from the Trumplican party. Future surprises will be vastly more pleasant, should they occur.

Saw this coming. Durham isn't known for being a political hack.

This has devolved to farce.

Waiting for the formal investigation of Pizza Gate.
