Canadian town of Asbestos to change its name, citing 'negative perception' | TheHill

A town in Quebec, Canada, called Asbestos is changing its name, with local officials saying that the current name gives off a "negative perception."

"There is really a negative perception around asbestos," Mayor Hugues Grimard told CNBC. "We have lost businesses that don't want to establish themselves here because of the name."

Smart but delayed thinking. This town was called Asbestos as far back as 1949 (see Asbestos, Quebec - Wikipedia). I wish them all luck with their new name.

I suggest that they rename that town to "Suddenly Woke" or "Recently Awakened" if those names are not yet in use.

Might I suggest they change their name to Opium, or Tabbacco?

I hope the good folks in Dildo, Newfoundland don't get any ideas from this.

I suggest they change their name to cellulose fibre

Good for them, if that's what they choose to do.

Personally, I don't think they should be ashamed of the name (and they probably aren't). People obviously didn't know the dangers of the material, or it wouldn't have been used so widely. It also still has legitimate - and valuable uses.

But, I can see where it would hamper their economic growth - more the fact it was produced there than the name itself. If they choose to change the name of their town, more power to them.

They can change it to what Asbestos does to you.... How does "Mesothelioma, Canada" sound?

Pennsylvania seems particularly obsessed...

Oh my god are these people whining about PC police over the name asbestos?

I think tacostan or burritoberg would be better names.
