(CNN)Thanks to a minor geomagnetic storm, the northern lights may be visible in parts of the northern United States and across Canada on Wednesday night.
"Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Sept-Iles, and visible low on the horizon from Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and Halifax," the institute says on its website.

Here ya' go, those in the Northern lower 48; now's your chance to catch the aurora borealis! That is, if you're in a dark area with good skies.

Enjoy!

I grew up about 30 miles from the border on the west coast and once or twice when I was a kid we saw the lights. A pale, washed-out version but northern lights just the same. I haven't seen them this far south since then so I'll be watching. Luckily the sky is clear here now for a few days.

Good luck, buddy. I've got early-to-bed neighbors, so I figure their lights are now out so I'm heading out to the yard!

Edit: Nope; too much light pollution!

Yeah- around here, you need to head out about 5 miles into the lake or maybe the western edge of DuPage Co.

Trees too tall here, it's probably pretty low in the north. I'm going to walk out to the pavement shortly.

The marketing team for the His Dark Materials TV series have really pushed the boat out haven't they.

Actually, that's a pretty damn good idea!

I think ThreeGoof's had the best idea - go out on a body of water! Or I suppose, up in a plane.

That would have done it. It's hilly here, and tall firs and I couldn't see it. Well, I kinda convinced myself that I kinda could, but no.
Oh well. I spent some years in the Yukon and liked the northern lights but you can have my share of the northern winter nights that go along with.

Looking at it, to get anything in IL as dark as midway into the lake, you’d have to go West of Rockford!

Yep. There's a lot in life I'd like to see, but that doesn't mean I'd like to pay the price for more than a few days! ;)

That's a pretty nice link. Thanks.

Having grown-up a city boy, I had two major unexpected discoveries concerning light pollution:

1] Going out west into the Rockies as a kid, and discovering a sea of stars overhead - enough to provide illumination!

2] Going to the 'burbs, and then looking back towards the city to see a huge glow emanating!

Both were unexpected, particularly the first. It's pretty amazing how much more you appreciate your location on a globe in the Milky Way, when you're in dark non-urban areas.
