Record Breaking Cold

The Record cold is being caused by a distortion of the Jet stream which causes the airflow to flow more north and south than it normally would. That distortion is caused by Global Warming. It will almost certainly be followed up next week with a bunch of unseasonable warm weather once the Jet Stream turns the other direction.

Overall the average temp for the year will still be higher.

Not at all bogus, because the logic goes something like this:

1. Record breaking heat?
Y: Go to 4.
N: Go to 2.​
2. Record breaking cold?
Y: Go to 4.
N: Go to 3.​
3. Go to 4.
4. Proof of AGW

Man made climate change does bring more extreme weather. A very astute observation Fletch, if you remove the sarcasm.

Yes, as the North Pole melts it causes the Jet Stream in the Northern Hemisphere to run further north and further south than it should. That leads to more extreme weather. You get hotter hot days, and colder cold days. On average though the temperatures trend hotter.
 
An acceptable alternative to the logic presented in Post #5 (at least on DP) is as follows:

1. Record heat is solid, scientific proof of AGW.
2. Record cold is meaningless, to suggest otherwise proves you don't know the difference between weather and climate.

The issue is global climate change. What you are talking about is the weather. The fact that this weather is out of the norm of the last 40 years makes it a subject that we can include when talking about global warming. You are not trying to play the Senator Imhoff example are you...I have a snowball, how can there be global warming?

and yes, it has been colder than a gravedigger's ass today. it was so cold that my tire pressure light popped on. i want fall back.

How do you know? How many severe hurricanes struck the US in, say, 1719. You know, before man screwed everything up. There were no droughts, no floods, no extreme weather before the industrial revolution?

As already noted, you are confusing weather (which is local and short-term) with climate (which covers larger areas over longer periods of time).

For example: You're looking at a relatively small area, almost certainly 5% or less of the planet's surface area. You aren't considering current temperatures in the Arctic (which are warmer than the 20th century average). You aren't looking at current temperatures in the southern hemisphere (where it's warmer than the 20th century average). If you were looking at 2019's global temperatures, you'd know that it is on track to be the 2nd or 3rd hottest on record.

Your conclusion that "it is very cold this week, therefore climate change is false!" is like saying "my left hand feels great, therefore I cannot possibly have colon cancer."

Oh, and as a reminder... Yes, sometimes science is highly counter-intuitive. That's one of the many reasons why it's so difficult.
