(Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia granted 73 foreigners “premium” residency under a new program to attract overseas investment by enabling selected people to buy property and do business without a Saudi sponsor.

Saudi Arabia Gives First Permanent Residencies to Foreigners

Having once been stationed in Saudi, my first question would have to be...Why would you want to?

Nope....I wouldn't take Saudi residency or citizenship if it was being given away for free.

I just saw a Saudi tourism ad on YouTube. They seem to be trying to change their global image. Not sure how well it's working.

Diplomacy through business relations pushes development. Saudi is like China. It has agreed to peacefully crawl into the 21st century.

Neither of which are really a mecca of human rights.

Instead of thinking of it as supporting the status quo, think of it as change from the inside. I, as well, would not want to work in such an environment but Westerners that do are performing a service for world development.

I live and work in KSA. Would I want a Saudi passport, probably not. I found it interesting there was no mention of which countries these individials originated from, I a thinking third world here.

Is spectating public beheadings in "chop chop" square in that tourism ad?

God bless capitalism! The Saudis did nothing to earn their wealth. Now they’re worried that the oil is running out, and they have no economy other than sucking oil out of the sand.

They don't make anything, have nobody who is able to repair anything ---unless they import workers. A nation with the natural resources and capital covered; however, lack both labor and skills as part of the equation necessary for ever becoming an advanced nation. And don't even get me started about the medieval backward thinking on individual rights.

Imagine if Saudi Arabia and it's oil resources had been populated by the Japanese over the last 100 years? It would be a nation leading the world into exploring Jupiter by now.

Well they do have room for at least one more person after the hacked Khashoggi to pieces.

It is ludicrous that we're allied with a nation that produced a majority of the 9/11 hijackers and continues to produce terrorists and that has barbaric human rights abuses on par with or worse than North Korea.

Its either be allied with them and sell them weapons or watch them ally with Russia and buy weapon from Russia. They do sit on a huge supply of oil that the world is dependent on
