Santa Monica police say pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators were shouting at each other Saturday when a scuffle broke out.

A video posted online shows a man wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat circling the crowd and then unleashing a torrent of spray from a canister.

What on Earth are you talking about, TU Curmudgeon?

First, the man in question used a nonlethal instrument with which to commit an unlawful battery. While extremely painful, bear repellent is generally not dangerous unless one has an allergic reaction to it.

Second, the argument "a good man with a gun" is typically brought up with regard to mass-shootings in gun-free zones. Not for assault and battery committed during political protests.

Third, a good man with a gun was there, apparently. Namely, the arresting officer.
 
I'm sure we will see plenty enlightening comments about how this is just one lone jerk and so what, from the very same people who regularly act like everyone they say is "on the left" is somehow responsible for ANTIFA antics.

Since it has been judicially determined that "action is speech" (for the purpose of the US constitution), I'm waiting for the first of Mr. Trump's supporters to spring to the defence of someone who "was only exercising his First Amendment rights".

I realize that this thread is going to sink like a stone, but would you like to place a bet on how many more than 1,000 posts it would receive if the arrogant, stupid, pathetic, loser with the bear spray had NOT been a supporter of Mr. Trump?

PS - We've already received the first "But that's DIFFERENT!!!" post.

Well, he is one lone criminal jerk who went to this protest with the intention of committing assault and battery, just as the members of ANTIFA/Black Bloc are a collection of jerks who go out with the intention of committing assault and battery. No one on either side of the political aisle is responsible for their criminality, except insofar as they engage in open encouragement or excuse-making for them.

Turning to the present case: Were I to engage in idle speculation, I would say this man went to the protest expecting (perhaps even praying) to be accosted by ANTIFA/Black Bloc for whom he had spent a whole thirty bucks to buy his canister of bear mace, only to find a bunch of upset Santa Monica soccer moms instead. So he just got frustrated with the whole back-and-forth and fired off the bear mace.

This moron is lucky that someone who inhaled that chemical didn't have asthma or other respiratory disorders. I hope the judge throws the book at this idiot.

Bolded: Indeed. But in the threads about ANTIFA around here, a certain group of people regularly act as if what they consider "the left" has group responsibility for ANTIFA's acts, often expressed as a demand that left-lean posters on DP enter the thread just to denounce ANTIFA for the thousandth time to prove that they do not support it.
 
Well, from the article he is on parole. So am not certain how that will effect all of this but surely this is a parole violation.

So knowing he is on parole and that there are tv cameras everywhere he decides to do this.

Can we just assume he isn't a member of Mensa?

Indeed; if I'd been in that crowd I'd have been immediately hospitalized and on a respirator. Then again, I wouldn't be in a crowd of protesters, since one never knows when the tear gas and/or pepper spray will come out, lol.

Thing is, it was a stupid, dangerous thing to do, and I hope he pays a hefty fine and spends some time in jail for it.

They're not violent like Antifa but they do pose a problem for democratic values.
In October 2017, RF protesters forced a panel of speakers to vacate a room reserved for a talk on "What is Civil Discourse?"
So, clearly this radical bunch of lefties were not interested in "civil discourse".

I suspect that about five percent of the people at that event might be CPUSA, no question about it.
The rest? Ordinary run of the mill garden variety "libbies".

I'd much rather groups like these NOT "shout down" speakers at university events, even if those speakers are representatives of an agenda that opposes liberal values.
The idea is to sell BETTER ideas than the Right, not shout them down.
And we have the better ideas, so there is no need for that kind of campus radical nonsense, which is counterproductive.

But this particular protest was not a shout-down at a college campus, so even though it was organized by CPUSA, it was still just a peaceful protest.
