US black school aide fired for rebuking boy's use of n-word

Students at a Wisconsin school have protested against the firing of a black security guard after he told a student not to call him a racial slur.

Marlon Anderson was sacked for repeating the n-word while scolding a black pupil who addressed him with the epithet.

Mr Anderson was asked on 9 October to help remove an unruly teen, who then began directing racial abuse at him.

He was sacked from West High School in the city of Madison on Wednesday.

COMMENT:-

Reading this article reminded me of the time that I was called into the office of the "Head Nun" (I was enrolled in a Catholic School at the time) and spent the better part of an hour with her trying to tell me not to do something that she adamantly refused to specifically identify.

I'm a big fan of "political correctness", but not when it's blatantly running amuck.

Zero tolerance is another term for zero common sense. It says that you don't trust your staff to use good judgement.

This part is interesting
In an interview with the New York Times, he said he had been asked by Assistant Principal Jennifer Talarczyk to deal with a 17-year old student who had been accused of taking another pupil's mobile phone.

As he escorted the alleged troublemaker from the building, Mr Anderson said the student directed the racial slur at him about 15 times, along with other offensive terms.

As Mr Anderson told the student to stop saying the word, himself repeating it several times, he says Mrs Talarczyk, who was present, activated her walkie-talkie microphone, allowing other staff to listen in to the interaction.

I wonder if they also fired Ms. Talaczyk, who (a) couldn't handle the student, (b) didn't handle the situation with the student verbally abusing a staff member, (c) didn't stop the guard from saying something she found offensive, and (d) violated the student's rights by broadcasting the incident over a radio.

I’m wondering if he was on his last straw or on the out with the boss already and this was just a “pretext”
?

I can't imagine a teacher using a curse word in response to that student cursing at them.

Seems an expected action from the district.

Spectacularly misleading headline, though...

REMAINDER OF THE ENTIRE KNOWN UNIVERSE - "What a heaping, steaming, load of crap that decision was.".

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION - "We have a zero tolerance policy on the use of racist language so f*** **f."

Guard should've known better. If he didn't, he does now.

This isn't an example of "political correctness" imo. This is yet one more example of why it sucks to have brown skin in the USA.

I think it's more along the lines of the stupidity of 'zero tolerance' rules.

The thread title and the OP are totally distorting what actually transpired here.

The school security guard was terminated for a valid reason.

How is doing his job or asking to be treated with respect a valid reason?

The content of the BBC article linked in the OP does not line up with the claims being made.

You either already know that fact or you have not read the link.

All I am seeing is man being fired for no reason, the word was said in a context that makes it acceptable.

That's much like what I feel about blanket policies. Those are generally put in place because management feels that they can't or don't want to manage their staff. It allows them to not handle situations as they arise and instead kick back and point to the blanket policy with no nuance and no need to understand the actual issues that arise.

I think it's a damn fine example of how stupid blanket policies reward those who show up to work but don't and punishes those who show up to work and do. Moral of this story like many, do less work if you want to get paid.

Cher said she will pay for all the guards legal fees in suing the school district.

I'm 80. White. Since President Trump got elected I've been called every name anything in the book. I just suck it up.

Over my 80 years, I've learned that you cannot be insulted unless you actually care. I don't.

Wait a gosh darned minute here. I thought people with slave blood in 'em could us the N word at will. Richard Pryor made a pretty good living off it. What's changed?

PC is for ******s.

Normal civility works for the rest of us.

What's "Normal" is far more subjective than what's "PC". So in a sense, you really didn't say anything with this.

The school will have to pay the man reparations.

Absolutely. It amazes me because more than most places, you want people with solid judgement to supervise a school - then the school administration makes rules that won't let them use that judgement. You have situations like the teenage girl expelled as a drug pusher for giving her friend a midol, or the honor student kicked out for bringing a 'weapon' on the school property - a kitchen knife that fell in the bed of his pickup when he helped his relative move. It's crazy.

This one is even worse, because obviously the AP failed to handle the situation.

It's common anymore where people who move up the chain of command institute policies that remove responsibilities from themselves. Used to be as you moved up the chain, you got paid more because of the bigger burden of responsibilities. Now days you go up the chain, get paid more to sit on your laurels and claim, "My hands are tied. It's the policy."
