[W:293] Elijah Cummings, dead at 68

Rep. Elijiah Cummings of Maryland died Thursday morning, according to his office.

The Democratic congressman has represented Maryland's 7th Congressional District since 1996 and served as the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, which is one of the committees involved in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

RIP Rep. Cummings. He was a remarkable and honorable man, so rare to find in politics these days. My condolences go out to his family.

Elijah is now in God's hands. I hope he made peace with God before he died. He was a giant in supporting the democrat cause at any cost.

He was yet another example of why we need term limits. 14 years as a state rep, and another 25 as federal rep. Most of his life was off the taxpayers dime, and he used his position to keep getting re-elected never giving another citizen a chance to represent his district. Only death finally removed him. Finally someone else from Baltimore will get a shot.

This seems to be the pattern these days. The only way to get rid of a politician is when they die of old age.

Cummings is one example among many, of why we desperately need term limits for Congress. I mean that across the aisle.
Unlimited terms are fertile grounds for personal enrichment and corruption.

I see no list of his accomplishments coming from you. All you got is ad hom.

That ranks you where you belong.

So, you know I am not gonna get banned by telling you my real feelings.
Have a nice ****ing day.

You should remember that apt descriptors are not personal attacks. Look, Cummings enriched himself and his family, while the half of Baltimore he "served" has gone to hell in a hand basket. It serves no one to lionize Cummings for his civil rights actions, while ignoring that people suffered, and are still suffering, because it benefited Cummings to keep blacks oppressed, dependent and enslaved in urban poverty plantations.

Got it apt descriptors, I will remember that too, when you cry about being called out when someone aptly describes you and your actions.
Want to have a conversation about term limits, fine.
This is a ****ty place to have it.

I read that no one knows where the 1.3 BILLION in "emergency funds" has gone. Disappeared. And, that 2/3 of his district is on welfare.
I'm sorry for his passing and am sure he has accomplishments, but that above^^ is not success. That's not service.

He died a very, very rich man.

Just because you read crappy ‘news’ sites doesn’t mean it’s true.

And he was not a very very rich man.

Ditto. Mine got better with the news this morning.....

I hope his district gets representation who will make their lives better and help restore the city of Baltimore to the greatness and promise which has been plundered in the last several decades.

Yes, it does.

I'm alive and he is dead.

One thing that I can’t help but observe is that there are no kindly “Forrest Gump” types — people who are dumb but have big hearts. It seems to be a rule that, like you, the dumbest people on this forum also have to be giant pieces of ****.

Death is the great equalizer, I sure hope people treat you with more respect when you die than you are showing here.

He was rich, he was powerful, he was entitled and he enjoyed many other benefits courtesy of the American people. He also enriched his family. Meanwhile, the majority of his district lives on welfare.

Again.. not rich.

Wealth that is typical for a guy who’s been making $175k/yr with an employed spouse.

And I’m guessing you don’t even know what you mean by welfare.

I am so glad that Republican Media and a New York City blowhard have made republicans come out and show us who they truly are.

Heaven isn't waiting for them.

LOL, you think his only enrichment came from his Congressional salary? Wow. The chasm between Cummings' personal wealth and that of his constituents only grew under his "service" to them, and that benefited him greatly.

Like your opinion of me matters....

Too funny.

Care to list the Legislative accomplishments of EC?

How well did he serve the people who put him in office?

He must have done something right because his constituents voted to re-elect him eleven times.

Are we really talking about a person's wealth from the same people who support a man whose daddy gave him over a billion and then he ran scams on tons of consumers?

Brainless Trumpers being classy as usual.

RIP Rep. Cummings

He must have done something right because his constituents voted to re-elect him eleven times.

It has nothing to do with "right". It has everything to do with loyalty, and Cummings as well as many other "people of color" politicians have enjoyed the servitude of constituents who have been brainwashed into thinking that they betray their race if they vote otherwise.
It's sad, but true.

Yup. And Trump's fortune had zero to do with politics. He'll serve his 8 years and be done. Can't say that for Congress.
