Fact check: Trump says again that Americans need ID to buy groceries. They still don't

The last time I saw someone use a check at the grocery store, the clerk had to ask the supervisor for help.:lamo That was a couple years ago:lamo

I've seen it quite often here.

I use a CC for groceries very seldom. There is so much CC fraud, that where I go (Winco) will take debit and checks, but not credit cards. It helps lower their grocery prices not losing money on CC fraud. Again, I seldom use a CC for groceries. It's rare, and they don't check. I'm aware of such things. It pisses me off.

Do you support enabling fraud? Because that what this does.

I looked such things up just prior to my post where I mentioned Visa and MC. It is these two companies that do not require the merchant to check ID if the card is signed. I always put on my cards "See ID." I don't sign them. In my view, anyone who doesn't write "see ID" in the signature block is ignorant that it is easier to steal their funds. When a merchant actually looks at the back, and asks for my ID, I thank them.

I shop at Winco, as well. I estimate I save about 20% each shopping trip versus shopping anywhere else. Up here, if you bring own bag, Winco gives you a 6 cent credit each trip.

People that pay with CC or DC have all provided ID to get those cards to pay for their groceries

Not ONE of the credit cards that I possess required an ID to obtain, nor have millions of others that have been issued. What you are saying is patently false.

Do you pick apart what the left says as much as what the right says?

If not, you are a hypocrite.

What are you talking about? I didn't pick anything apart. In fact, the only people going ape **** in this thread are Trump supporters who are flinging nonsensical posts left and right about things Trump never said. Credit cards and checks and cigarettes and stuff. If you look at this thread objectively and from above, it's actually insane.

No, I don't support enabling fraud, but it doesn't matter what I support. The CC companies have made a business decision to eat the fraud to make the cards more convenient, and the grocery stores and others don't want to slow the line, which would require more employees working at peak, and all those businesses like the self check lines to keep employee counts down, and gas stations like pay at the pump for the same reason.

So if it's "enabling fraud" the companies involved are all doing that very deliberately to maximize their own profit. There is no reason for me to care about it, or to not use my CC. I use my phone and Apple Pay more than a card, because it's blazing fast and secure. The chip cards are a huge step up in preventing fraud at POS, and they do the same thing as mobile pay systems, which is use an effectively temporary card number. So if any business that uses the chip system is hacked, they don't get my actual CC number - they get this string of numbers that's useless to a crook.

As to making them check by not signing or saying, "check ID", that will RARELY work because the clerks almost never see or handle the card. The chip cards are inserted by the user face up into the machines, and the clerk is oblivious whether it's been signed. My mother in law's card isn't signed at all, and I use it weekly or so on her behalf. I've never had anyone ask for her ID. Crooks know who requires ID and don't go there. So it's pointless. In 30 years I've never actually had a problem, and if I do have one my exposure is $50. I'll take that over dragging out my ID with every purchase.

You realize that's crazy, right? No one with a brain that works and the good character to use it thinks for one second that Trump was talking about showing Chase Bank a driver license to get a debit card to buy groceries.

Damn it!!!!

I just got turned away from the Five-and-Dime while trying to buy gumballs and a milkshake float by trading one of my chickens. Forgot my damn ID!!!

I can't remember the last time I saw anyone use a check at the grocery store, either. There are these things called "debit cards" now!

The closest thing I've seen to a personal bank check in a grocery store in nearly 20 years are signs that say that the store doesn't accept checks.

I tell then don't worry about the 6 cents. I like using the sturdy bags.

Trump continues his Delusional Rantings Tour with a repeated lie that you need ID to buy groceries.

He has got to be the stupidest leader in the world.

Other lies included statements that you don't need ID to vote anywhere in the country (not true) and that he granted permits to an LNG company that other administrations had refused (Obama issued the permits).

No one does fake news better than Donald.

Theres this thing called credit cards. Your name and picture are often on them. If not...You can get asked for your drivers license.

Happens every day all over. I am glad this is the thing you pick to care about.

It is a good example of projection for the day.

I know.. except for checking into hotels and renting cars, I can't remember the last time I was asked for my credit card. Poor Mr. Bull has probably never purchased anything online, either.

I usually only use a check once a month (rent). The last time I wrote "a lot" of checks was when my son was in high school (2012) - usually about 10 a year for clubs, PTA, fees and such.

I am never asked for ID for use of CC except for car rental and hotel.

Where I live, you have to pay ten cents for each bag you want from the store. My guess is that more than half of the people who live here were already using their own reusable bags before the tax passed. The moment it passed, nearly everyone else bought theirs. I do feel badly for unsuspecting visitors sometimes.

Also true. I write my SSN on the form, sign it, put a stamp on it, and a CC shows up a couple weeks later. All of this nonsense about credit cards and checks is perfectly worthless since it's not what Trump meant. What's sad is that these posters know that, yet they're happy to embarrass themselves for him anyway.

Pictures are not often on credit cards. I know you can customize and add photos but I have never once seen a credit card with someone's actual picture on it.

I use plastic all the time, an except with car rental or hotel, I am not asked for ID. My picture is not on any of my credit cards.

Unusual purchases (like the rare auto purchase) sure.
Can Merchants Require ID on Credit Card Purchases?

Visa
Merchants cannot require ID if the credit card is signed. However, if the credit card is not signed, the merchant can ask you to show a government-issued ID and sign your credit card on the spot.

MasterCard
Merchants cannot require ID if the credit card is signed. However, if the credit card is not signed, the merchant can ask you to show a government-issued ID and sign your credit card on the spot.

I was listening to a program on this awhile back, and they indicated giving ID for usual purchases was a bad idea, because then the clerk has all of your personal information as well as your CC number and secondary code to make you more at risk for fraud.

You can tell who the under 45 crowd is here when people start talking about pictures being on CCs.

Lol, black cards don't come with pictures guys.

Even funnier, checks!

I decided to do a little research and while there still many that do accept checks, the majority don't even have the condition to check ID!

Yeah, like the minimum wage clerk is going to have you dig for your picture ID after you just took five minutes to write a check and there's four people waiting impatiently behind them.

 Some people....

Or paid a bill online using a checking account.

Yeah, I haven't seen that, Most grocery stores do accept them. But if you're one that uses a check at any grocery or retail store these days you're one that clings to the distant past!

I'm glad cities are phasing out those plastic grocery bags. They're the biggest litter nightmare in the world!

I can't remember the last time I saw anyone use a check at the grocery store, either. There are these things called "debit cards" now!

I specifically remember the last time and it was a sweet elderly lady (80's?) and she was having a hard time holding the pen and kept apologizing to the cashier and those of us in line. Everyone was patient and understanding and I ended up helping her load her groceries in her car. That was about 2 years ago.

So yes, I can see elderly people sticking to writing checks because it's normal for them. Or they may not trust debit cards. My mother always preferred paying cash.

The last time I saw a person use a check at a convenience store was on Driving Ms Daisy. Is that what the folks with the red hat mean by making America great again?
