Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said Tuesday he suspended an officer who cooperated with federal deportation officers by turning over an illegal immigrant he encountered during a traffic stop — a move the chief said violated department policy.

Chief Roessler didn’t identify the officer but said he “deprived a person of their freedom” by cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The chief called that unacceptable.

So just to make sure I understand your point, you're against county police departments having their own policies and they should instead be arms of the federal government? If he didn't want to be suspended he probably should've followed his department's rules and regulations.

If this Fairfax officer disobeyed the orders and policies of his department, he should be suspended. Like a soldier, LEO do not get to decide for themselves which orders and policies will be obeyed.

The GOP needs to use this in their pollical campaign advertising.

It's outrageous the left protects lawbreakers and attacks our law enforcement community. No wonder the cities they control are ****holes.

But then again, their love for this new class they are pandering to is amazing.

They even think they are better than our nations Veterans.

Where is there any authority over the whole and entire Concept of Immigration expressed in our federal Constitution and supreme law of the land?
 
This is exactly the kind of thing that's going to happen if gun confiscation ever becomes the law of the land in red states. Hence to the American right I say: you may resent local defiance of federal law now, but you'll appreciate it eventually.

According to gun nut logic, not only is this police chief a patriot, he could have done much more to that tyrannical officer than just suspend him. :)

To be very clear, I do not think that should have been done. Just following gun nut logic. :shrug:

Not really. We have a Second Amendment and should have no security problems now. Don't grab guns, grab gun lovers and regulate them well.

I'm not sure if you've been listening to the rhetoric of Democratic lawmakers and Democratic presidential candidates, but they seem to be pretty convinced the 2A won't be an impediment to confiscation as long as said confiscation is selective.

Selective or not, it won't surprise me in the least if federal Democrats manage to bring in some sort of nationwide mandatory buy-back in the next decade, which will have limited effectiveness for the same reason as the crackdown on illegal immigrants: state and local law enforcement simply won't enforce the law.

When the Democrats take over all three branches, ICE will be dismantled, and the façade of border control will come to an end.

A big shoutout to those Dem candidates and elected officials who have, in effect, called for open borders. They feel that anyone in the world should have the right to just come in -- and with their families. At least they are being honest -- not like those Dem pols who say "Why, of course, we want people to respect our borders!" (wink wink nudge nudge)

So just to make sure we understand YOUR point, you are against non-federal law enforcement turning over individuals with outstanding federal arrest warrants because it means they are then arms of the federal government and can't have their own policies?

If the Chief didn't want the public backlash that forced him to reinstate the officer, perhaps he shouldn't have been punishing an officer cooperating with other public law enforcement.

Right?

I don't really care how local police departments set their standards and rules, but obviously if a police officer ignores his department's rules and regulations he's going to be fired. Maybe our cops should follow rules, yeah?

From the OP linked article: "The chief said the officer was working a traffic accident in the Huntington section of the Virginia county on Sept. 21 and came across someone without a driver’s license. When the officer ran the name, it returned a flag from ICE, which said the immigrant was a fugitive after failing to appear for a deportation hearing.
The county’s system confirmed the warrant. The officer called, and an ICE employee responded."

So you want local governments to be able to pick and choose what laws they want police officers to enforce. Seems a bad practice that the local government has established. I know other places have done the same thing.

Since you support the local government policy of not helping the FEDS/ICE, seems it would be ok for the FEDS to cut all funding related to immigration to that locality. That would be in line with the policy of immigration is a federal problem. :mrgreen:

If a cop doesn't follow his department's policies, then obviously the department can fire him. If you have a problem with it, take it up with the department.

No, it needs to be taken up with the local politicians. They make the laws not law enforcement.

I will always resent local defiance of federal law that protects foreign citizens well being over that of the American citizens.

I will always respect local defiance of federal law that assaults American citizens constitutional rights to 'keep and bear arms".

It's no wonder police departments across the country think it's in their best interests to actively promote illegal immigrants.
