Trump Administration to Roll Back Clean Water Protections

It's good until things get really bad and then someone takes action to place regulations. It really is a silly position. There's validity in critiquing excessive regulation, but to claim that things are great now without understanding that they got that way because of regulations, is dishonest.

One of the perverse bits of this is that I had an inside view of stupid regulation by way of my wife - economist, who started in gov before going private - who described various shenanigans. They're right only insofar as that government can come up with stupid wasteful regulations. But when they complain about regulations, it isn't from a position of knowledge. All they've got is "government bad --> regulation bad".

Stupid, and hurts us all

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Thursday announced the repeal of a major Obama-era clean water regulation that had placed limits on polluting chemicals that could be used near streams, wetlands and other bodies of water.

The rollback of the 2015 measure, known as the Waters of the United States rule, adds to a lengthy list of environmental rules that the administration has worked to weaken or undo over the past two and a half years. Those efforts have focused heavily on eliminating restrictions on fossil fuel pollution, including coal-fired power plants, automobile tailpipes, and oil and gas leaks, but have also touched on asbestos and pesticides.

Oh good. More contamination of drinking water, more pollution causing wildlife to die. Great for coal companies though. Is American great enough yet?

You are obviously not aware that the Supreme Court tossed Obama's illegal "Waters of the United States" rule as unconstitutional in National Association of Manufacturers v. Department of Defense, No. 16-299 (2018). That is what happens when you have a President who manufactures new laws illegally without Congress. They get slapped down hard by the courts. Yet another Obama illegal legacy scrapped.

What I find nearly as maddening as Trump's determination to make climate change worse faster is that he's not even doing it primarily because he thinks it will help the economy and simplify business decisions. He's doing it moreso to spite Obama and Democrats. If a Republican administration had implemented the exact same environmental regulations, I believe that Trump would leave them in place.

Actually, Obama and the Democrats did it to themselves. Obama created an illegal new rule, without Congress, which the Supreme Court tossed as unconstitutional. This is all about Obama and his illegal activities, which the Democrats not only allowed, but encouraged. Now you are living with the results, as every part of Obama's legacy is being tossed by the courts.

The picture from Sabine Pass shows a docked drilling rig. I'm from that area and have fished under drilling rigs docked at Sabine Pass and I have never seen any evidence of them polluting the water and the fishing is always better around the rig legs because fish like structure. Structure draws bait fish and bait fish draw game fish. The cars YOU drive depend on fuel from the Gulf of Mexico and those drilling rigs have to park somewhere for repair and refitting between drilling jobs. The drilling rig at work in the Gulf have only improved fish for the same reasons bait fish which attract game fish.

This has absolutely nothing to do with anything you just said. That's total BS. Trump's claim that this bill impinges on the rights of farmers and rural landowners, is a total lie. This has everything to do with money and pollution of rivers and streams from the runoff of arsenic and other chemicals from coal production. And yes, that DOES pose a threat to Americans. This is going to further weaken regulations specifically for power plants, and oil drilling rigs. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with farmers leveling their land or any other bull**** that you choose to believe.

This clean water rollback is just the latest in a string of moves by Trump to dismantle major environmental protections against pollutants, from curtailing regulations on methane emissions and energy-efficient light bulbs, to pushing for oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Destroy the environment -- that's Trump's mission. And in exchange, he makes his rich oil and coal barons richer.

You are the one who is lying, as the Supreme Court has already held. Obama's illegal "Waters of the United States" rule is unconstitutional, and was tossed by the court in January 2018. Everything about Obama has been illegal from the very beginning, but that is what you leftists like - criminals. Now you are reaping the rewards of your devotion to those criminals by seeing everything they created wiped out of existence. Justice is truly sweet.

Send the bill to trump, then sue him because he does not pay.

Trump Administration to Roll Back Clean Water Protections

This really bothers me. More than any other of his "**** the planet" policies, this hit home closest.
For one, we just spent boat loads of money over decades cleaning up the industrial age. Now all that was for nothing? WTF was the point?

The river that ran though my town as a kid was so polluted it stopped freezing in the winter. It is where antifreeze came from.

I recall as a kid whenever we crossed it, we would hold our breaths or you'd get sick to your stomach it smelled so bad.

People, these policies of living in the past will lower our quality of life and leave us behind economically as the world moves forward.

That's not what the article says.

I know what you're saying. We have a large river, runs straight through the center of the state from North to South, it's 150 miles long and runs right into Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. From 1932 until 1977, the river received PCB pollution discharges from the General Electric (GE) plant at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The EPA designated the Pittsfield plant and several miles of the Housatonic as a Superfund site in 1997, and ordered GE to remediate the site. EPA and GE began a cleanup of the area in 1999. Most of the PCBs used in the United States during this period were made by Monsanto.

We know that PCB's are carcinogenic. The water killed fish and contaminated those that didn't die but they couldn't be consumed. The contamination nearly wiped out our population of large bird like eagles and hawks. After tremendous efforts, the river is still contaminated but fish are returning to spawn from Long Island Sound.

Here we are again, about to return full circle back to that dark, contaminated place we were back in 1932. All man-made, all due to the irresponsibility of a president that doesn't care, as long as he can play golf, make money and run this country like an autocrat.

Exactly. Our River was green and yellow. Fish used to float down stream, dead. You could not even swim in the river never mind eat he fish.

Almost three years in, Donnie still wants to erase everything "Obama". No matter the consequence, because let's face it, it will never personally affect him beyond the negativity from those who don't already adore him.

For those who suffer from this, **** you. Trump doesn't care.

As a commercial diver in the state of NJ, I can tell you that it's often easier for construction companies to pay fines than it is to try to clean up. Companies would be willing to expend financial resources to battle pollution, but regulations will punish them for not meeting standards that are sometimes impossible or unlikely to be met. Rather than giving clean up the "old college try" they just pollute and pay fines. The state is happy collecting money while leaving the environment negatively impacted. Then you move on to the next job for the state, lather, rinse, repeat. It's crazy and frustrating. Get out of our way and let us do our best.

Sigh, its navigable, it still applies to EPA rules. Quit making appeals to emotion that aren't even applicable to the conversation.

You could start with a timeshare. Every other day, just 8 oz of coal plant runoff.

Show those stupid regulators what's what!

How naive, you actually think water is no longer safe to drink because of this change. From the story:

"An immediate effect of the clean water repeal is that polluters will no longer need a permit to discharge potentially harmful substances into many streams and wetlands."

We are all going to die because people think that polluting is OK as long as you have a government permit.

I think it’s wired in their DNA that they’ve instinctively chaotic and destructive. As long as it doesn’t affect their narrow world, everything is open for destruction and exploitation.
