Trump says he canceled secret Camp David meeting with Taliban leaders

President Donald Trump said Saturday that Taliban leaders were to travel to the US for secret peace talks this weekend but that the meeting has been canceled and he's called off peace talks with the militant group entirely.

Trump tweeted that he scrapped the meeting after the Taliban took credit for an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier.

Interesting. I seem to recall trump bashing Obama for trying to talk to the Taliban.

Not that it is necessarily a bad idea talking to one's enemies. However there's not much here for Twump's ego to fall back on. Either:

1. He was planning to talk to the Taliban as he criticized Obama for doing
2. He's lying and no meeting was planned

remember the 'phonecalls' from China? I'm guessing Donnie Tiny Hands has done another number two in his pants.

Most of the media was ignoring this development. Trump was negotiating with terriosts.

I find it interesting that this whole meeting was going to happen around the anniversary of 9/11.

Hmm...hasn't he been trying to pull completely out of Afghanistan (and if possible, Syria too)?

So a President can't change his mind in order to work toward that goal?

As far as I am concerned, I could care less who is in control of Afghanistan, as long as we are out of it. The same goes for Syria and any other place in the Middle East.

Perhaps we could maintain some kind of multi-nation presence in Israel...but I doubt that. I still recall what happened to the Marine barracks in Lebanon way back when.

So if he is willing to talk to the Taliban, and we can get out, more power to him.

That was not lost on me either.

How is that important?

As I recall, not a single Afghan was involved in 9/11.

There were 19 citizens of Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Lebanon, and one was from Egypt. Hijackers in the September 11 attacks - Wikipedia

All the Taliban did was allow Osama and crew to train and hide there...until Osama ended up hiding in Pakistan.

Trump needs a new furore to make his weatherman stunt go away. Does anybody believe he knows how to spell "unbeknownst"?

Trump calls off secret meeting with Taliban, Afghan leaders

President Donald Trump said Saturday he canceled a secret weekend meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghanistan leaders after a bombing in the past week in Kabul that killed 11 people, including an American soldier, and has called off peace negotiations with the insurgent group.

Trump’s tweet was surprising because it would mean that the president was ready to host members of the Taliban at the presidential retreat in Maryland just days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. More than 2,400 U.S. troops have been killed since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan to go after the Taliban, which were harboring al-Qaida leaders responsible for 9/11.

Canceling the talks also goes against Trump’s pledge to withdraw the remaining 13,000 to 14,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan and close U.S. involvement in the conflict that is closing in on 18 years.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the Trump administration’s diplomat talking to the Taliban leaders for months, has said recently that he was on the “threshold” of an agreement with the Taliban aimed at ending America’s longest war. The president, however, has been under pressure from the Afghan government and some lawmakers, including Trump supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who mistrust the Taliban and think it’s too early to withdraw American forces.

“Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday,” Trump tweeted Saturday evening.

“They were coming to the United States tonight. Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great great soldiers, and 11 other people. I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations,” he wrote.

The Administration had been talking up the negotiations with the Taliban for past week saying that they were on cusp of a "good" agreement and had agreement in principle in place. Not sure if this Trump's own decision to pull back on it or if the "Hawks", Graham and Bolton got to him eclipsing Pompeo. I'm not sure that inviting the Taliban to Camp David which be in effect treating them as legitimate full state actors just a few days before the anniversary of 9/11 would have been a good look at all as well. This secret Camp David meeting seem to come as a surprise to many of our own diplomats as well as those of our friends and allies. Is this just latest evidence that America First is pretty much America alone and that our foreign policy is now largely a product of the cult of personality.

I refer you to my comment..."Can't a President change his mind?"

Of course to some, it does not matter what he does. It's always going to be the wrong thing to do. :coffeepap:

He didn't change his mind though... He simply forgot the position he previously took while using it to denigrate someone else. There is a pattern.

I forget... did you have this fervency back when Obama was working on a withdrawal? Or did you also change your mind?

Re: Trump calls off secret meeting with Taliban, Afghan leaders

If one is gonna have a secret meeting with the Taliban on 9/11, shouldn't it be at the Memorial?

So not only will you cede Afghanistan to the Talban but you will give Putin control of Syria too? You are a dream come true for the Kremlin. What's next? Ceding Ukraine and Venezuela to that little thug? Why is Putin doing all the winning lately?

I actually supported Obama's attempt to negotiate with the Taliban.

What part of...:

BTW I did vote for Obama in 2008. So that should end your deflection, one would hope. :coffeepap:

This is why most of the people on this forum have lost respect for you over the past 3 years. You defend Trump vigorously even when he torpedoes things you support, it makes you look spineless. You know you're allowed to criticize him when he does something that violates your opinions and principles right? As a self-proclaimed "libertarian left", the vast majority of your positions are directly in conflict with Trump's positions and policies, but I don't think any of us have seen you actually criticize him and stand up for your own beliefs in a very, very long time.

I learned long ago to take the latest statement by President of the United States of America Donald Trump and put it in a mental two week suspense file. After that time has elapsed, I can evaluate it against the information that has surfaced since and assign it a proper place in a list of importance.

And, you know, on September 10th 2001, I probably would have agreed with you.

Seems like when it pertains to him the rules are different. How much have we, the taxpayers, paid for his golf outings now?

How many on the left criticized Trump for signing that prison reform bill into law? How many on the 'far' left criticized his scrapping of TPP?

Planning a party with the Taliban on US soil during the week of 911 has to be the thing that finally wakes people up. Right?

Right?
