Even now, when Trump has vowed to cut funding to cities who refuse to comply with federal law, sanctuary city mayors are giving Trump and the American people the middle finger. Why?
Local and state authorities have a point:
The kind of stuff that Trump wants to do will increase fears of deportation, possibly leading to family break-ups among illegal immigrants. If people aren't at risk of being deported they are far more more willing to report crimes, use health and social services, and enroll their children in school.
From the perspective of local and state authorities, Trump's proposed policies do not make much sense.
The Fort Hood shooting, the Boston Marathon bombing, the San Bernardino shooting, and the Orlando nightclub massacre, to name a few, were Islamic terrorist attacks on innocent Americans. And yet in every instance, the Obama administration, with high praise from leftists, rushed to protect and defend Islam. Obama's DOJ even threatened to jail anyone caught speaking badly of Islam. Really, folks – why do leftists feel that American lives do not matter when the villains are Islamic?
The truth is Islam is not a threat to the U.S. The threat to U.S. is in the form of radical Islam. It doesn't make any sense to wage war against a billion people if only a tiny, insignificant fraction are committing terrorist acts. It makes more sense to make friends with the ones who want to be our friends. Leave alone the ones who want to be left alone. And destroy the ones who mean us harm. It's just smart strategy.
Remember when leftists cheered Obama for allowing people from Ebola-infected countries into the U.S.? Finally, pressure from the American people forced Obama to invoke a commonsense travel ban. Still, leftists accused Americans of being racist SOBs for desiring to keep the deadly disease out of our country. Why?
There shouldn't be knee-jerk, emotional reactions to public health issues like this.
I don't blame Leftists for this controversy. It's crazy people like radio talk show hosts who think dark-skinned people are disease-ridden.
For Americans who are not paying attention, do you know that leftists hate the song "God Bless the USA/Proud to Be an American" and even banned it in public schools? Leftists have made it illegal to say "God bless America" in public school. Leftists banned wearing American flag shirts to school, calling it racially insensitive. Incredibly, leftists deem Trump's desire to make America great "racist hate speech." What is wrong with these people? Why do they hate their and our country so much?"
Having participated in Democratic Party meetings, rallies, and political campaigns, I can assure you this another Fox News inspired fever dream. The vast majority of the left, the people actually engaged in politics, and not engaging in cry-bully tactics of SJWs do not hold these views. They have families. They show up to work. They love their country. They are hard workers. Many of them attend church. And they have their own version of MAGA. They too have things they want to fix about the U.S. just as Trump supporters have things they want to fix about the U.S. And they too have political concerns, and wants, and needs, just as Trump supporters. And they too have a right to participate in the process just as Trump supporters do. They have a right to join organizations, unions, to negotiate their pay and benefits.
And guess what if you have this notion you think America should be white and Christian, that you can ONLY be a real American if you are White and Christian, and that's what it means to be "American", you deserve to be called a racist and a bigot and a religious extremist.
So this picture you have of the Left is entirely wrong.
It's like saying the Nazis marching in the Charlottesville, NC Nazi rally is representative of all Republicans.
Yes, some on the Left are crazy. It's true. Just like Steve King. The poster child of crazy Republicans.

Nobody wants Sharia law. The few news items you've heard about deal with contractual and family issues such as divorce and so on. Our legal system allows individuals the freedom to enter into agreements in accordance with Islamic family/divorce law.
We must contrast these minor issues with an implementation of Sharia which directly violates our law or the U.S. Constitution. This something nobody on the Left agrees with. And the degree that people on the left do not understand Radical Islam or Sharia law and its incompatibility with Western (liberal democracies) political and legal systems is born out of ignorance, not hatred for the U.S.
This is another Fox News inspired fever dream.
