Trump postpones Denmark trip after Prime Minister refuses to discuss sale of Greenland

NATO nations don't "pay NATO." They have commitments to spend a certain percentage of GDP on defense. There is no one to "pay up" to.

Please tell us you understand that.

Regardless of subtleties she'll be in Trump's crosshairs

If that's the case Denmark better start paying the 2% that all EU countries are supposed to pay as a Nato participant.
They are only paying 1.3% & until they pay up they will be in Trumps crosshairs!

Man, you guys really ride or die with Trump, huh? No matter how stupid or ridiculous his comments, you always got his back. No matter who we have to beef with, you stand by his side.

Trump:

Classy... And Trumpsters still think this guy is a good diplomat and good businessman?? lol... He's basically saying we protect them so Denmark should grovel to us and they owe us....

Great tactic huh? 1st thing you want to do if you're trying to have a business deal with someone is to insult them...

Its like mask off for the US hegemonic empire.

Okay listen. The Danish budget surplus in 2018 was almost 6 billion dollars. I think we can afford half a billion to Greenland.

Wonder what we could buy in the US for 6 billion dollars...ohh Trump enterprises and the shut the whole thing down....

That would be a perfect retaliation.

Well then, what's the problem? If Greenland is a Danish possession and he expressed interest in buying Greenland, only after leaks of his interest caused liberal fever swamp hysteria, then there isn't a problem - its probing for a willingness of an owner to make a sale. And Greenland-Denmark turned him down. That is how business works - as opposed to old fashioned invasions of territory a country desires (e.g. the Crimea, Ukraine, Tibet, etc.).

On the other hand, if one prefers the old fashioned way that can be arranged. If China continues its claim of "near arctic" interests some good old US gunboat diplomacy, revival of a neo-Monroe doctrine and military interventionism may be the ticket. No point in playing badminton when the nation's enemies are playing football; a few aircraft carriers, a division of marines, and the taking of its couple of airports ought to do it. Then buy off the whiners with lavish aide, and invite the oil companies and mining combines to develop resources.

PAX Americana - the new empire. I like the "ring" of it. ;)

I don’t know about “liberal fever swamp hysteria”.

It’s more like laughter, tinged with disgust at the arrogance, childishness, rudeness and sheer stupidity of the current President.

The Danes are offended.

After all Trump invited himself, and then cancelled the visit he invited himself to in the first place.

If you don’t like what the “left wing fever swamp” had to say about it, you won’t draw any comfort from the international press or the Danes themselves.

At least the Danes are being diplomatic enough to suffer Trump’s arrogance and swipes with as much dignity as the entire idiotic episode can rate.

Trump made a fool of himself once again, and doubled down on stupid and rude, to boot.

No one in Denmark is worried about a fool like Donald Trump.

That is, unless the fool decides to spark an incident or start a war.

But there are a lot of people all over the world who know that this man needs to have his toys taken away .

The Danish PM should just tell Trump to either shut his pie-hole or vacate the US Thule Air Base in Greenland.

Its like mask off for the US hegemonic empire.

Empire? Unlike Britain, France, Spain & tp a lesser extent the Dutch & Germans to USA always have managed to
stay away from Imperialism and for good reason as expressed by Bryan concerning the Philippines:

William Jennings Bryan

'Imperialism is the policy of an empire. And an empire is a nation composed of different races, living under varying forms of government. A republic cannot be an empire, for a republic rests upon the theory that governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed and colonialism violates this theory. We do not want the Filipinos for citizens. They cannot, without danger to us, share in the government of our nation and moreover, we cannot afford to add another race question to the race questions which we already have.'

He wants to base nuclear missiles there, sort of like the Russians and Cuba in '62.

The rest he'll turn into a ****hole country.
There are nukes there, well most likely. The US lost a nuke or two in the 1962 causing massive amounts of environmental damage that to this day is a problem. The US also had nukes there until 1965...well officially. Thule Airbase is a no go area for Danes so we really don't know what the US is doing there.

Got 3 years... Funny how all right wing Americans forget that critical part of the agreement..

Sure :lamo trying to get the Olympic games to the US is going to bankrupt the economy. If anything Obama has aided the economy.

Secondly, Obama strove to diminish the American Influence? :lamo How? By being a decent president? By not acting like a petulant 4 year old?

Also, I live in the Netherlands, and I would not want him to visit the region where I live.

Most Olympics leave behind rotting and unused complexes. Has there ever been an Olympics that has not been a net loss to the host Country/Town? I would never want to see an Olympics come to the US.

Denmark has a 6 billion dollar surplus so spending 600 million in Greenland ain't gonna break the bank.

If Denmark is so flush with money, why do they refuse to meet their agreed upon Nato membership goals?

Only five of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's 28 member countries last year met the alliance goal of spending at least 2% of their gross domestic product on defense.

It is disgraceful that Trump cozies up to dictators and strongmen but when Denmark does not want to take about selling Greenland he insults the Danes and their Royal family but cancelling. That is the way the US treats it's allies in this day and age.

A president needs to be presidential, not petty as hell.

He is a spoiled brat, always has been, and always will be nothing more.

1) If Trump was actually sane, he'd know that it is no longer the 19th century, and that sovereign territories are not for sale.

2) If Trump was actually sane, he'd know that we already have a military base on Greenland; and if we needed more, we could negotiate with the government of Denmark for additional locations.

3) If Trump was actually sane, he'd know that we can do this crazy thing called "trade with other nations" in order to access natural resources in other nations. It is his own protectionist policies that is teeing up Greenland for China's benefit.

4) If Trump was actually sane, he'd realize that the way the US handles its existing foreign possessions is pretty ****ty.

5) When Denmark said "no," the White House first denied that it was a big deal. Then, Trump petulantly called off his visit. The Danes now have take down the signs they already put up for his visit saying "Partner, ally, friend."

I.e. his ignorance resulted in yet another international embarrassment and strained diplomatic relationship for the US. Must be Wednesday.

If sanity were an issue, we should be far more concerned over the many whack-a-doodles with TDS hysteria than with the eccentricities of Donald Trump. The critics outraged stupidities and hyperbolic mouth foaming over the slightest vocalization by Trump would, were this a clinical setting, require a 5150 72hr observation at your local mental health lockup.

For the record, there isn't (nor hasn't) been any unwritten principle that colonial or other territories can't be transferred via non-violent transaction. Granted, the common method of "transfer" in the 20th century has been through war (WWI, WWII, wars of nationalist independence), but this "modern" method has been far less "sane" than that of peaceful 18th or 19th century buying and selling (e.g. Louisiana purchase and Seward purchase).

And it certainty is not insane to weigh the advantages of owning a territory on a new frontier, soon to be more climate hospitable providing vast claims to arctic oil, gas, fishing rights, and mineral wealth. A value not lost on Russians, the Chinese, and Canada all of whom understands the benefits of owning source of state revenue, taxes, and national income...even if the Trump haters don't.

Finally, given Denmark's increasingly loose control of Greenland means that military security and force basing may not be available to the US at some point, especially disconcerting in that Greenland itself attempted to facilitate major Chinese involvement with its infrastructure development.

On only one point is Trump acting a tad daffy: his cancellation of the trip to Denmark. But that excepted, his position and interest is more than sane - its intriguing and far sighted - which is unusual from a US that normally reacts to events long after the horse has left he barn.

Maybe the same reason we're are supposedly doing so great but keep ignoring our failibg infastructor and shool system, priorities.

Don't tell me our Toddler in Chief threw a temper tantrum after being told no that he can't have something. Again? How shocking!

There's no payment involved. Each country is currently committed to spending 2% of their gdp on defence. They have three years to reach this target, so nobody "isn't paying their way"

Cool story bro

Back in the real world, Trump indulges in a constant stream of embarrassment and outrages and insults, unlike pretty much any of his predecessors. Obama, Bush 43, Clinton, Bush 41, regardless of party, none of them deliberately acted like a 2 year old in office.

For the record, there isn't (nor hasn't) been any unwritten principle that colonial or other territories can't be transferred via non-violent transaction.
For the record, buying and selling sovereign properties pretty much stopped being a thing 50-100 years ago. And of course, many of the "sales" you mention were sold by entities that didn't exactly gain the land via peaceful agreement.

And it certainty is not insane to weigh the advantages of owning a territory on a new frontier, soon to be more climate hospitable providing vast claims to arctic oil, gas, fishing rights, and mineral wealth. Re-read my comments about trade, and how bone-headed moves like this drive our own allies into the arms of China and Russia.

What the f*** are you talking about?

Greenland isn't facing any major military threat. Denmark isn't slacking in its responsibilities in managing Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous territory that

And again: Trump's foreign policy (to the degree it exists at all) is a string of nationalistic, xenophobic, transactional temper tantrums that are largely hostile to our own allies, and friendly to authoritarian leaders. None of that says to Greenland "we want to help you develop your infrastructure." Nor does "I want to buy this autonomous state, and slap the name Trump on it."

Offering to buy Greenland like it's a plot of swamp land is pretty much at the bottom of the list of "intelligent ways to restrain China's international ambitions."

I mean, really. Think about it for a minute. How would you react if Mexico offered to purchase Texas, in an attempt to curtail the international influence of the United States?

What's truly "daffy" is your implication that Trump is playing 4-dimensional chess, when in reality he is acting like an impetuous child, who throws a temper tantrum at every turn.

Regardless of subtleties she'll be in Trump's crosshairs

You going to enlist to fight yourself if der trumpengroper bungles us into a war with em?

How ****ing embarrassing for the United States. We are now a joke.

Trump once again exhibits petty behavior that I wouldn't expect from my teenagers.
Dealing with a teenager of my own now....I've come to realize that teenagers are assholes because of hormones. Trump is an asshole because he is Trump and he's been an asshole all of his life.

The difference is important.

He actually was invited by the Queen.

Trump just doesn't like women who are not willing to cow down.

The stronger the woman the quicker he is willing to slap them with insults.

I think there is more to this than is known or being revealed, but one thing is clear...Frederiksen had better watch her rhetoric in the future. She blew it by shooting off her mouth about Greenland.

Let's face facts, eh? Greenland is a hole that Denmark shovels money into. If Denmark is offered a way out of that hole, it would behoove them to at least consider it instead of badmouthing the person making the offer.

What a load of bullsh*t.

Denmark isn't Moe Greene from the Godfather.

Trump can't make them an offer they can't refuse.

Maybe Trump could by Cyprus?

Trump should offer Greece & Turkey a deal and then unify the country because he is so successful in doing that here

I read an article on this that shows trump once again knows what he is doing and CNN has no clue.
just this past year or so china made a bid to buy greenland. it wasn't taken.

how this didn't make the news is beyond me.
it only makes it fair that trump is once again trying to outmanuever US enemies.

believe it or not greenland is a very rich country in minerals and other things that are used across the globe.
it only makes sense to try and make a move on it to buy it if china is.

the only people that hate trump hated him before he was even elected.
yet they can't name one policy that he has passed or gone for that has been inherently bad.

obama was the great divider no doubt about it but people forget all his racist comments.
