(CNN)Less than two weeks before his scheduled trip to Denmark, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he has postponed his visit to Copenhagen after the Danish Prime Minister disputed his interest in buying Greenland as "absurd."

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," he wrote Tuesday night.

He continued, "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!"

A White House official confirmed to CNN that the entire trip to Denmark is being scrapped.
Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland from the Danish government and the White House counsel's office has looked into the possibility, two sources told CNN last week.

On Sunday, Trump confirmed his interest in buying the country, telling reporters that Greenland is hurting Denmark.
"We are good allies with Denmark. We protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, and the concept came up," the President said in New Jersey before heading back to Washington. "Strategically it's interesting, and we would be interested, but we will talk with them a little bit."

But Frederiksen was not amused, telling the newspaper Sermitsiaq, "Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland."

"I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously," she said, calling the conversations "an absurd discussion.
"
Though it appears Trump's inquiries were serious, the President had made light of the reports, joking with a meme of the golden Trump International Hotel of Las Vegas photoshopped onto a seaside Greenland town and writing on Twitter, "I promise not to do this to Greenland!"

When Trump confirmed his interest in the Greenland purchase on Sunday, he had suggested his trip to Denmark was not related.

"We're going to Poland and then we may be going to Denmark -- not for this reason at all. But we're looking at it (purchasing Greenland). It's not number one on the burner," he told reporters.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump had accepted an invitation to visit Her Majesty Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark, and he had been expected to participate in a series of bilateral meetings and meet with business leaders, according to the White House.

The Danish Royal House said Trump's postponement "was a complete surprise."

"This has never happened before," Danish Royal House Director of Communications Lene Balleby told CNN.
It's unclear whether the postponement will affect his scheduled visit to Warsaw, Poland -- part of the same trip -- where he is to attend commemorative ceremonies and visit memorial sites for the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II.

Trump postpones Denmark trip over Greenland sale - CNNPolitics

It is disgraceful that Trump cozies up to dictators and strongmen but when Denmark does not want to take about selling Greenland he insults the Danes and their Royal family but cancelling. That is the way the US treats it's allies in this day and age.

A president needs to be presidential, not petty as hell.

I think there is more to this than is known or being revealed, but one thing is clear...Frederiksen had better watch her rhetoric in the future. She blew it by shooting off her mouth about Greenland.

Let's face facts, eh? Greenland is a hole that Denmark shovels money into. If Denmark is offered a way out of that hole, it would behoove them to at least consider it instead of badmouthing the person making the offer.

He was never invited. He invited himself.

So America needs a hole to shovel money into?

Greenland is as much a part of Denmark as New York is a part of the United States. You're just mad because they won't feed Trump's ego.

Ahh the faithful DP Trump propoganda tool.

She blew what exactly? Selling 55k people off to slavery in the racist Trump empire?

While Greenland ain't a profit giving part of Denmark, we have no problem paying for it.

As for shovelling money into bottomless pits... You mean like most Republican run, US states?

The US has the capital to make use of Greenland.

Greenland isn't a state of Denmark.

You got any more nonsense for me to slap you down about?

And the fact is that it is not for sale, to then cancel a trip to a NATO ally is petty to the max.

And it would not behoove them to not want to consider it, and badmouthing when you are being insulted by an Orange Oaf who wants to buy part of your nation (without it being for sale), is not badmouthing, it is telling the truth/reality. Ooh and please, if there is one person who insults 24/7 it is that Amber joke for a president in the WH.

Clearly, no one wants to really talk about Greenland nor why Denmark formed the means of representation they did for Greenland.

But because Trump was idiotic enough to speak about it the whole thing will end up thrown into the media fueled political spin machine.

It is unlikely Denmark will "sell" Greenland to the US, it is even less likely the people of Greenland will be all that thrilled at the idea. Only the far right thinks Frederiksen should be fearful of Trump or should take his 'engage in US policy via Twitter' seriously.

Is that all you have? Nonsense rhetoric about "slavery"? Playing your stupid race card?

Anyway, I'm glad you don't have any problem dumping half a billion dollars into a bottomless pit. Have fun with that.

You got any more nonsense for me to slap you down about?

Greenland is a constituent kingdom of Denmark, so yes , it is a "state" of Denmark. Are you being intentionally ignorant?

Nobody talked about states, PeteEU was talking about Greenland being part of their country as much as New York is part of your country. It is you would is talking nonsense.

And who cares if the US has money to make use of Greenland, it is not yours to make use of.

You do know that the slavery comment has ZERO things to do with race? Or were you unaware that the people in Greenland are not a different race? Or are you just on a huffing and puffing tirade where facts are left by the wayside?

And the Greenland people will be deliriously happy to not be part of the US as they are citizens of Denmark.

Cool, now we have another diplomatic enemy. Yee haw

Yet, you defend Trump wanting it.

The term is "constituent country" and it is quite different than "state".

I don't think the people from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland would be happy if you called them "states" of UK...of which they are constituent countries. They are their own countries.

Conversely, the 50 "states" in the US are not their own countries and it would be ludicrous to think of them that way. It is not ludicrous to think of Greenland as its own country.

Wow...you seriously don't understand what you read, do you?

This is what PeteEU said...this is what I responded to: "Selling 55k people off to slavery in the racist Trump empire?". He referenced both slavery and racism. Nonsense rhetoric and the race card.

Hyperbole much?

The US is better suited to achieve value from the island than Denmark. We could dump half a billion into the island and get a return in the trillions.

Well, he is according to some/many a racist. And selling into slavery would be the issue if you have an autonomous region being sold to the US against their will, that would some see as slavery, loosing your autonomy and being sold off to someone you do not want to be sold off too.

You don’t get much more parochial or jingoistic than to attack the Prime Minister of Denmark for not taking Trump’s idiotic notions seriously.

What makes you think that the United States can bully people around like this, and casually suggest buying parts of other countries without bothering to talk to them at all.

But this is typical Trumpster.

Your hero makes a global fool of himself once again, and is stupid enough to double down on it.

Trump:

We’re very good allies with Denmark, we protect Denmark

Classy... And Trumpsters still think this guy is a good diplomat and good businessman?? lol... He's basically saying we protect them so Denmark should grovel to us and they owe us....

Great tactic huh? 1st thing you want to do if you're trying to have a business deal with someone is to insult them...

You love your nonsense rhetoric almost as much as PeteEU, don't you?

There is no indication that, should the US take over the responsibility that Denmark has toward Greenland, that Greenland would lose their autonomy. In fact, this notion that Greenland would be "sold off to someone" is, itself, nonsense rhetoric.

Greenland is a Danish possession.

Now that you’ve celebrated the way Trump made a fool notion that nobody was talking about other then him into an international incident. It doesn’t seem to bother him (or you), that nobody asked the Danes, or folks in Greenland what they thought about it.

After all, we’re “Amuricans” and we can stomp all over the rest of the world if we want to.

And then you blame the Danes for not taking Trumpian stupidity seriously.
