Elizabeth Warren apologizes for 'harm I have caused' at Native American forum in Iowa

    USA TODAY - Shelby Fleig - USA TODAY•August 19, 2019

SIOUX CITY, Ia. — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren opened her remarks at a Sioux City forum on Native American issues on Monday with a brief public apology related to her past ancestry claims.

“Like anyone who’s being honest with themselves, I know that I have made mistakes,” said the senator, who represents Massachusetts and hails from Oklahoma. “I am sorry for harm I have caused. I have listened and I have learned a lot, and I am grateful for the many conversations that we’ve had together.”

In October, Warren released the results of a DNA test intended to quell criticism from President Donald Trump and others who argue that Warren inaccurately has claimed Native American ancestry.

U.S. Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico introduced Warren at the Frank LaMere Native American Presidential Forum in Sioux City. Haaland, who endorses Warren, is one of the first Native American women elected to Congress.

Haaland said the controversy around Warren's past claims, including President Donald Trump's "Pocahontas" taunts, distract from attention to serious policy matters.

"Some media folks have asked me whether the president's criticisms of her regarding her ancestral background will hamper her ability to convey a clear campaign message," Haaland said. "I say that every time they ask about Elizabeth's family instead of the issues of vital importance to Indian Country, they feed the president's racism. Elizabeth knows she will be attacked, but she's here to be an unwavering partner in our struggle because that is what a leader does."

Warren was then greeted with a standing ovation from hundreds in attendance.

This may finally put the whole "Pocahontas" thing to bed. Warren has gone full circle from ignoring the issue, to defending it with her "I'm a native - my grandma said so" to the silly DNA test which spectacularly backfired, to prostrating herself before the permanently aggrieved and apologizing for the 'harm I have caused'. Harm?

Note that for anyone who was personally harmed by Warren pretending to be a Native, I suggest that person not go outside during a windy day because he is the weakest, most easily harmed person in the whole world.

Maybe there was an actual Native somewhere who was harmed when she didn't get hired at Harvard Law School because they figured they already had one in Warren. But I don't even know about that.

The only question now is if Warren gets the Dem nomination, will Trump continue to call her Pocahontas all the way through to next Nov, 400+ days from now? That will start to get old quickly. But we may see.

Two things from this mess that Warren took way too far.

    1. Odds are the apology will be largely insignificant to Native American support going up or down.
    2. This will continue to be a punchline for Republicans, as it probably should, for a very long time.

Of course Trump will keep calling her Pocahontas.

No it won't. Have you seen Trump and his cult? Do they just let things go like that? No.

If she wants to pursue this Presidential election, she's going to have to be able to deal with this still.

I suppose from her perspective it's better to have the "mea culpa" complete before the national election; it takes some of the wind out of that attack's sails since she won't have to defend the mistake by lying. I don't think improving her support among Native Americans was an objective.

    So, she's "sorry".

She falsely represented herself as native American to get a job at Harvard. Whoever she beat for that job suffered considerable harm, I think.

She falsely represent herself to the University of Texas and the State Bar of Texas.

She falsely represented herself to the voters again and again and again and again until backed into a corner.

    And now she's "sorry".

    I'm 1/1024 impressed.

By the way, you left out the fact that the moderator at the function you cite berated the native Americans in the audience for not being very enthusiastic about Warren.

If I don't answer your post it's because you lost the debate.

If white privilege really exists, why would a white person pretend to be a minority?

Maybe, but if she loses why, though? She's 70 years old and this is probably her last bat at politics. However, your statement does hold true...if she wins and becomes President. Just the GOP will become even more trollish barbarians.

I doubt it was a mere afterthought.

Of course it takes wind out of the sails of the likely Republican attack assuming Warren wins the nod, but the issue is still the same in dealing with that group. The irony is Republicans typically look for any and all means to restrict a vote and it could be argued well that Native Americans end up one of those targets to limit, but at the same time if it is Warren some Native Americans may stay home assuming they have no one to vote for.
