President Trump reaffirmed that he wants to buy Greenland. Says he's spoken to Denmark about if.

Trump says he'''s still interested in buying Greenland. Denmark says it'''s not for sale.

Trouble is, the Danish PM says it's not only not for sale, he can't believe the offer is serious. For one thing, he says, Greenland belongs to Greenlanders and they're pretty much unanimously against the idea.

Who wouldn't want the chance to be Puerto Rico with icebergs?

Here is an interesting piece about the current relationship between Denmark and Greenland.

How much money do you think it would take for Denmark to sell Greenland? - Quora

Denmark pays a LOT of money to maintain Greenland, even if Denmark doesn't "own" Greenland. Putting aside the semantics and rhetoric, the effective result of any deal would simply be the US taking over those maintenance costs. The notion that the Greenlanders don't actually own any land would make the island's resources subject to the decisions of whomever is maintaining the island.

I can see this as a potentially attractive deal for the US and I don't blame Trump for looking into it. But, like all deals, it takes two or more to tango.

We'll see how it all turns out.

There are people who live in Greenland. They might not be too appreciative of being sold to the US

There are only around 56,000 people who live in Greenland. Pretty much all of them in towns dotting coast because most of the island is an ice covered tundra. I’m not sure the Danes asked the Inuit - who make up most of that population- if they wanted to be a colony of Denmark either.

That's the "semantics and rhetoric" I was talking about.

Depending on how things work out, I see these possible outcomes:

1. Denmark says no deal...and they continue to pay what they've been paying to keep Greenland running.

2. Denmark makes a deal with the US...and the US takes over the costs.

3. Denmark says no deal to the US...and they stop paying to keep Greenland running.

I'm sure the people of Greenland want #1 to continue. Realistically, #2 wouldn't be a bad thing for the people of Greenland. #3 would definitely suck for them.

Greenland has been granted a high level of autonomy, and likely they were not asked when Denmark first made claim to Greenland about their desire to be Danes or not

But now Denmark is democratic, and so is the US, buying and selling of people between countries is not democratic

Well, fortunately nobody is talking about “buying and selling of people.”

But that is what would happen is it not

Danes one day, Americans the next because the land they live on was sold

Our manbaby-in-chief clearly didn't feel like he got enough attention the last time he threw his food bowl on the floor, so he's pulling the exact same stunt again.

Your option 1 has been, uh, opted for. Denmark has said no.
Your number 2 doesn't have anything in it for Greenlanders. They can read the news too.
Number 3? Really? Why would you think Denmark would cut Greenland loose?
There's a fourth pssibility. Trump makes a nuisance of himself about it and Denmark tells him to close up the US Air base at Thule.

Besides, I heard America doesn't have any more imperialist ambitions. I guess Trump didn't get that e-mail.

The land would be sold, but that doesn’t constitute the buying of selling of people.

They become "subjects" so yeah, it kinda does.

Conquerers never killed all of the conquered. Who would play the role of peasants if they did?

Would they be Danish citizens with a large degree of autonomy like they have now. Or foreigners in their own land?

Would they be dictated to by a foreign government deciding what happens to their land?

Would they be forced to changed citizenship or ethnically cleansed from their homeland?

It isn’t their land. They lost it in the 13th Century to Norway and then to Denmark in the 19th. People are interested in the land’s rich deposits of minerals and rare earth elements. I’m not sure anyone much cares what happens to them, but Id imagine they would retain some degree of autonomy not unlike the other territorial possessions of the US.

They are Danes, and have autonomy over Greenland. Meaning a high degree of self rule.

The world changed from when people and the land they are on can be bought and sold without their approval

Why buy it when you can invade it with the US military, Mr. Trump? Denmark's army is pretty small so I doubt they'll put up much of a fight... ;)

Has it? I’m not sure Israel, China, or Russia got that memo. In fact I don’t think the US got that memo either since eminent domain is a thing.

They need someone to keep their island running...they can't do it themselves.

It's costing them more than half a Billion a year and they get nothing out of it.

There's a fourth pssibility. Trump makes a nuisance of himself about it and Denmark tells him to close up the US Air base at Thule.

And then Denmark loses the money the US pays...not to mention the benefit to the island, itself.

Thule Air Base is still very much a cornerstone for U.S.-Greenland relations. Thule Air Base is much more than just an American military unit in the far North. Thule Air Base also helps surrounding communities get hold of the things they need. Thule Air Base has a 10,000 foot runway which allows air access and which can support the nearby communities. Thule Air Base’s port enables heavy machinery, construction materials, scientific equipment, annual expendables, and fuel to be delivered during the three month port season, so that new constructions and renovations can begin. Additionally, Thule Air Base enables Greenlandic fishermen and the Danish Navy access to supplies and fuel, which is crucial to their operations in the cold, cold North.

I made a similar statement in another thread, but the liberals are hell bend on declaring this a modern-day Louisiana purchase - cattle and peasants included.

(sigh)

Of course it's imperialism. Imperialism happens peacefully as well as by war. Look it up.
Or did you guys 'redefine' that word, too?
Why do you think Denmark should sell Greenland to the US? And if it's a useless monetary drain, why does Trump want to buy it?
Wait a minute. I just answered my first question, didn't I. Denmark should sell it because Trump wants it. Hey, want a good chuckle? Just imagine Obama had offered to buy that useless financial drain, how you would have reacted.
Doesn't matter though. Greenlanders will never approve such a deal. No way on God's green earth would their lives improve by being administered by the US instead of Denmark

yawn...

Greenland might not be a "useless monetary drain" (your words, not mine) to the US.

Uh-oh...you are resorting to "but...but...OBAMA!!". That means you have no reasoned response left. Sucks, doesn't it?

btw, Greenlanders might not even have a say in the matter. After all, they don't even own their land.

Just goes to show, Trump supporters can rationalize any weird **** he does with anything, for awhile I was hesitant to use the word cult but that is pretty much what it is and as I always say, when he said he could shoot someone and not lose votes, that was one of the few true statements he has ever made and I swear if tomorrow he nuked Los Angles they would still defend him and say “one less Lib City ****hole to worry about, this ought to stoke the TDS libtard fires LMAO!!!”

In all my time following US politics they are the most intellectually absurd group of supporters I’ve ever seen and more than willing to throw their brains out of the window to justify anything he says or does.

What Trump should have done is say, "We will let Russia keep Denmark, if they let us have Greenland"

And you don't want to go into conservative reaction to a Democratic president offering to buy Greenland. You know what that would be.
And by the way, Greenlanders do own their land. If you read the report you would have read the PM of Denmark say so.
