So this is why his campaign rallies are like mobs, he runs them like one. For those small government conservatives wondering, Yes this is corruption at the highest level! I can't imagine what dirt he must have on the leaders of shell for him to even suggest this and for them to agree.

OTOH he might be the one person on this planet who actually adopts the conspiracy theories he himself spouts. Bussing people in. Protesters paid for by George Soros. Odd that he does the same thing he complains about just like how he hires all those illegal immigrants....

Your attendance is not mandatory,” one manager told workers, summarizing a memo that Shell sent to union leaders, the Post-Gazette reported, but only those who showed up at 7 a.m., scanned their ID cards and prepared to stand for hours through lunch would be paid.

“No scan, no pay,” workers were warned.

In addition, workers who decided not to listen to the president’s speech reportedly would not be paid overtime rates routinely built in for extra time during the week.

Trump's large union crowd at Shell was given the option of not showing up — and not getting paid

Interesting that Trump and Shell had to resort to such tactics. If I had to go to a rally like that, I'd be sure to bring my e-reader.

Re: Trump's large union crowd at Shell was given the option of not showing up — and not getting paid

I am not convinced there is much to be upset about here.

Yeah I'm sure if Obama had worked with a company to do this you would have been cheering it on.

Would you like it if your employer forced you to go to a political rally? Or see a democratic candidate? Employers are supposed to stay out of this type of stuff.

Re: Trump's large union crowd at Shell was given the option of not showing up — and not getting paid

It's a really crappy thing to do to people, but it just reminds me of the military. It's mandatory to help with good PR for powerful people. I do wish the Republicans who constantly spout individualism would be more upset with these types of coercion.

Just to reiterate - the workers were told to show up to Trump’s speech AND look like they agreed with whatever he was going to say or they would lose a day of pay.

Probably not, I am not a union supporter (at least not in the modern context of what they have become.)

At best coerced, and for unions that is fairly common.

Not ideal I agree but it does happen to rally support behind a candidate by appealing to a union to appeal to their membership.

It may not involve direct pay (or removal of it for not showing up,) but that is one of the pitfalls of being unionized in that context. Not always about the job but the political support.

OK, but Trump does not even agree with unions or has unions in practice. He hires illegal immigrants!! This is probably blackmail, unless it is Trump doing that union type thing that you supposedly don't like. So...

Yes, it's Democrats who support and love unions. Now you get the irony!

Remember the "paid protesters" meme? Yeah.

The bottom line is unionization mixed with political influence has caused this conclusion.

It does not matter if we are talking about a machinists union, auto construction union, teachers union, a union of low wage workers across service industries, a pilots union, or otherwise the basic premise is the same. Show up, get paid.

As I said before, I am not sure there is much to get upset about here as that is how these operations are ran. I do not care if we are talking about actual work, a meeting, a rally to support someone (D) or (R) or otherwise behind the name, whatever else... organization of labor means organization of representation.

Right or wrong, good or bad, agree with whatever union jumps behind whatever candidate... that is what happens.

Now if we want to chastise this union for what they did for Trump, and ignore what other unions did for Obama (someone else brought that up in some asinine attempt to call me out) then we have a big problem.

If you organize labor, tie it to political desire this is the result. Left or right, this will always happen.

Yeah but is it right to hate it while doing it? Which is what Trump does. I know Joe Biden is a big supporter of unions and a number of Democrats are too. To me it's a problem when Republicans force people to come to them or not get paid for it, and then complain about liberals doing that! You don't hear democrats complaining about that because they seek out that support. The only union the Republicans publicly support is the NRA. Trump should be doing townhalls, not forcing people to go to his hate rallies.

What makes you think Trump had anything to do with this?

Nobody was forced to do anything. The article says they were paid strait time if they didn't attend, and overtime if they did:

This story has been updated to clarify the origin of a memo to workers at Shell's site.

---

Shell spokesman Ray Fisher explained that the workers onsite have a 56-hour workweek, with 16 hours of overtime built in. That means those workers who attended Mr. Trump’s speech and showed up for work Friday, meeting the overtime threshold, were being paid at a rate of time and a half, while those who didn’t go to hear the president were being paid the regular rate, despite the fact that both groups did not do work on the site Tuesday.

From what I understand is that there was no work scheduled for these workers for that day. In other words, it was an "excused absence" if the worker did not show up, hence "attendance is not mandatory".

No work (includes company-organized meetings), no pay, no hours counting towards overtime.

So instead of getting paid to work for a day they got paid to hang out for a day and listen to a short speech. I doubt too many of them were upset by this.

You don't see the issue in coercing people to attend a political event?

They did at one time. I think Buttigieg is the only major candidate so far that has done anything more than pay lip service and stand in picket lines for a photo op. "Working class" voters have been pretty uninspired and unimpressed by this crop of candidates. As Hillary! showed, they are slowly becoming part of "flyover country" for Democrats.

Dems' big problem with authenticity still looms large. I don't find one of them likable. Bernie's a fricking full-on "GET OFF MY LAWN!" curmudgeon. Beto is just so g-d angry all the time. Castro supports attacking his own constituents and Warren, well she's just a liar, liar pants on fire.

In essence it was going to be a day without work, so workers had the option to come in for the company event and get paid or stay home and not get paid since no work was scheduled. To Orphan Slug's point, this is something that is part of the political aspect of unions so it comes with the territory.

I don’t think an employer should require employees to go to a political rally or not get paid. It doesn’t seem right at all.

I would be so mad if I had to a political rally. I wonder if they were forbidden to protest or be disruptive at all.
