Rashida Tlaib backs off plans for Israel trip, citing "oppressive conditions"

After the Israeli government agreed to allow U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib entry into the West Bank to visit her relatives during an overseas humanitarian trip, the Michigan Democrat says she's now changing her plans amid widespread outcry, slamming Israeli leadership for their initial ban.

"When I won, it gave the Palestinian people hope that someone will finally speak the truth about the inhumane conditions. I can't allow the State of Israel to take away that light by humiliating me & use my love for my sity" — grandmother — "to bow down to their oppressive & racist policies," Tlaib, who is Muslim and of Palestinian descent, tweeted of her planned visit with her grandmother.

She added, "Silencing me & treating me like a criminal is not what she wants for me. It would kill a piece of me. I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in — fighting against racism, oppression & injustice."

So, Rashida Tlaib asked to go to the West Bank but was denied. Rashida Tlaib then was outraged at what Israel did. Israel decided to allow Rashida Tlaib into the West Bank. Now she won't visit the West Bank because of conditions that existed at the time she first asked for permission....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sounds like maybe Grandma doesn't like Rashida all that much.

Interesting how thin the support for the principle of 'free speech' is with some on the right wing. Her visit was contingent on her agreeing what not to say while on the trip. That's a legitimate requirement by Israel - their country, their rules - but you shouldn't pretend that the visit wasn't subject to those restrictions which many people might not want to agree to in principle.

Oh good, because this story needs to get worse...

Obviously when one has to make the decision between visiting your grandma and promoting the destruction of the Jewish state that decision is an hard one to make.

This was a PR stunt from the beginning.

Muslim enemy of the Jews: Israel is a terrorist nation who don't deserve a seat at the table with other nations.
Israel's response to such rhetoric: Then you can't come here to visit.
Muslim woman's response: What the hell?

Please share.... What nation should allow someone in who is promoting very real damage to that nation?

And if she was so intent to visit kin why couldn't she shut up for that time? If I were trying so hard to visit kin I could shut up for a week.

My belief exactly.... The moment she is allowed she backs off.

I think *most* people see this for what it is. The intention was pretty much the same as when AOC went to the border.

She could have gone, visited grandma, taken notes and returned to the US and incited all she wanted. A win win for her, but instead she decided to use her grandma for political purposes.

I wasn’t aware that the existence of the Israeli State is dependent upon whom I buy my Hummus from.

How humiliating for Israelis. Netanyahu is shouting to the world that Israelis are snowflakes. Maybe he's jealous that Trump is the biggest laughingstock in the world, and he wants to compete for the title?

It’s funny how she says they’re treating her like a criminal while she, pretty much, calls them all criminals.

What should “some on the right wing” actually do about Israel legitimate exercise of sovereign power?

The issue regarding what "should" happen is different.
I understand that Israel would not be willing to accept her giving speeches inside Israel as an American representative whom promotes the Palestinian interests
On the other hand, Israel should not be able to control the access to the West Bank, and Tlaib should not need any Israeli permission to visit anybody she wants to see inside the Palestinian territories in the West Bank

Who is currently in control of the West Bank?

Who is currently in control of the West Bank?

I don’t know. Has Israel annexed anything today? Can people still randomly show up with a document dating to the Ottoman Empire and tell Arabs that their home is no loner theirs with Israeli guns at their disposal?
