A federal appeals court panel ruled on Thursday that the government must provide detained migrant children with basic hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes and sleeping mats, ending a debate that incited national outrage after a Justice Department lawyer argued against the need to do so.

The exchange in June between the lawyer and a panel of openly aghast federal judges spread rapidly in the national media. The case grew in significance days later, when a group of lawyers told reporters they had observed distressed migrant children held in cramped, dirty conditions and without sufficient food or clean water at a Border Patrol station in Clint, Tex.

Once a person is taken into Govt custody, they are responsible for them and their basic needs, food, care and cleanliness

The world looks at the US and sees that basic humane treatment of those detained needs to be adjudicated by the Courts

WTF is the problem with those lacking basic humanity?

Does anyone support the treatment, where soap/toothpaste are not a basic need?

Did these children arrive at the border with toothbrushes, soap, and sleeping mats, provided by their "parent(s)"?

Why not use those?

It is mind boggling how the ultra religious party is the one that is all for treating their fellow humans in the worst possible way. So much hypocrisy. Jesus would kick them in the nuts...

It's a paywall, so I can't read the whole article. It seems the issue involved a conversation, not a policy.

Please provide proof children being held by the government were denied the items mentioned.

We already know how the media has lied in the past. AOC got her pathetic head handed to her when she tried to lie about conditions.

One point though:

I am not a religious person but I was raised as an Orthodox Christian. And because Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism have a lot in common, my understanding is that the Catholics in American have not deviated away from Jesus' teachings about the poor.

To me it seems that it is the Protestants who have deviated from the compassion for the poor that is found in the New Testament and have reversed its words from "..it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," to "... it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a Welfare Queen to enter the kingdom of God"
