Justice Dept. reassigns warden of federal jail where Jeffrey Epstein died, puts two staffers on leave amid investigations

So the first few heads have rolled....

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that Attorney General William P. Barr had directed the Bureau of Prisons to temporarily assign the warden to a regional office while Epstein s death is investigated. The Bureau of Prisons also put on leave two staffers at the federal detention center who were assigned to Epstein s unit

A reassignment does not mean fault. It is RARE that any investigation into a prison or jail suicide results in fault. RARE. And there are more suicides than murders in jail/prison.

This isn’t just any suicide! I’m gonna go out on a limb and opine that reassignment is not going to look good on a resume/efficiency report.
They had one job, keep the perp alive.

Will we see some people having fatal accidents in the near future. Falling down stairs, somehow shooting themselves in the back of the head with a gun 15 feet away from the body?

Um, wut? The Warden should be place on leave (with pay for now), not get another assignment he can screw up.

And now the cover-up begins.....Does anyone in his right mind trust Barr?

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the reason he is being reassigned is to get him out of the way while the investigation is being conducted.

I'll go one further and say this isn't about a failed attempt to prevent suicide or keep a prisoner alive. It's a failure of BASIC staffing, procedure and maintaining facility operations.
If a prison does everything humanly and technically possible to avert a major failure, leading to loss of life, that's one thing. But this is another entirely!

It's like they were guarding the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

“When poppa found out he started to shout and started the investigation” - apologies to Paul Simon

That's not what I'm saying. Plenty of people get reassigned in theses situations. But the outcome of investigation is still that there was no "fault". Everything done "by the book". Of course, there is always subjective interpretation and judgement involved in that process.

LOL I said anyone in their right mind. Trumpist's don't count. Barr is a national disgrace.

Awww....ya miss your "wingman"?

He'd investigate, but he's too busy running guns south of the border.

i am still troubled by the absence of 24/7 video
it should be standard issue to constantly monitor the cells
the government insists the cameras were not present in all cells because of privacy concerns for the prisoners
which then allows us to conclude there are some videoed cells and those inmates must be the ones for whom privacy is not a concern
if anyone sees the criteria for video vs non-video monitoring, please post here or send me an IM

A tactic that started under GW Bush...

A senior Obama administration Justice Department official who briefed reporters on the documents said the papers show law enforcement officers in the Bush years could have filed criminal conspiracy and false statements charges against lower level figures in the gun trafficking operation, but they decided to watch and wait until they could move higher up the chain of command.

"We want the... manufacturing and distribution pieces also – we want it all," an ATF official wrote in March 2006.

The case ultimately languished in the U.S. Attorney's office in Arizona until the Obama administration sent help from Washington D.C. and indictments were handed down in May and October 2010. Six people have been convicted in connection with Wide Receiver, the senior Justice Department official said.

That's awfully severe punishment for merely facilitating a prison murder, don't you think? A verbal reprimand would seem more in order and even that would be far more than is usually done.

Well that sounds like a good start but the investigation needs over sight from leadership at the DOJ.
The suicide should have never happened. Was it just very poor decision making or something else?
Hopefully there will be a clean investigation to find the facts.

They are so full of it. A cell can be made virtually suicide proof and have a "reliable" cellmate to keep an eye on the guy. That cellmate, in this case, was removed for a yet known reason the day before the bastard committed suicide. Guards having worked continuous overtime fell asleep. Blah, blah, blah.

It could happen!
